Junior Deacon Handbook 2019-20
Thank you for your willingness to serve as a Junior Deacon!
You are now part of a tradition that goes back many decades
at Greenfield Hill Church. Each year, the Church Council
nominates high school teens to serve as Junior Deacons, who
are then elected by the entire congregation at the Annual
Meeting.

The youth who are elected (a) are confirmed members of the
church, (b) are actively involved at GHCC, (c) have
demonstrated that they are committed to serving the church
faithfully and lovingly. So, first: Congratulations on being
elected!

This document will fill you in on the duties and responsibilities
that await you! There is also a list of all of this year’s Junior
Deacons at the end of this handbook, with contact information,
so that you can be in touch with people when you need to!

Sunday Morning Duties
There are four things that you may be assigned to on a Sunday!

  1 – Greeter/Carillon Duty
Greeting at the door, ringing the church bells
  2 – Church School Duty
       Helping lead Church School classes
  3 -Chancel Duty
Helping David/Alida lead worship, by reading
       prayers and scriptures
  4 – Communion
Helping the Deacons prepare and serve Holy
       Communion)
Note: If you are unable to cover your Church School or
Greeter duties, you are responsible for finding a sub!
But for Chancel or Communion, please tell Alida, and
she’ll find a sub for you.

Here are the details for each of these jobs
1 – Greeter/Carillon Duty:
1- Arrive at church 20 minutes before worship.
2- Immediately go up in the balcony. Ring the bell 4 or
       5 times.
3 - Then you start the 'carillon' -- the music that
plays from the steeple. Locate the remote control
which is on top of the cabinet next to the bell rope.
Press button #3 really hard and let go fast. After
about 10 seconds the music will begin. (If you don't
hear it after a loooong pause, push the button hard
again). It will stop itself automatically.
                               3
4. Now that you've rung the bell and started the music,
go back downstairs to the front door. Get a
nametag from the top drawer of the chest of
drawers, and put your name on it.
   5. Stand by the front door and greet people coming
to worship!! Smile sweetly, extend your hand, shake
their hands warmly, make them feel so so happy that
they came to church this morning!!!
   6. Right before worship is scheduled to start, go back
up to the balcony! As soon as the organist stops
playing the organ 'prelude', ring the bell 4 more
times! This signals the beginning of worship.
2 - Church School Duty:
Arrive at the Church House by 8:50 a.m. Marcia
Carothers will direct you to a Church School Class. Your
task will be to assist the teacher however they need help …
anything from helping kids with an art project, to assisting
with games, to going one-on-one with a child who needs
   some extra care!
3 – Chancel Duty. Very important duty!
Alida will be in touch with you ahead of time with complete
instructions about what your role in worship will be. You
and one other Junior Deacon will be leading the prayers,
reading the scripture lesson, and passing out the offering
plates to the ushers. You will need to be at church 15
   minutes before worship.
4 – Communion: Also a very-important duty!
You will be preparing the bread and juice trays with the
Deacons, and then sitting with them during worship. You
will be distributing the bread and juice to the congregation.
Arrive at church a half-hour before, to help with
   Communion set-up
