Tree Falls on Halloween

It was neither a trick or ‘tree-t’ when a large chestnut tree fell across
The Cliff on the morning of Thursday 31st October, bringing down the
phone lines. The tree fell, due to decay, but on a day with little or no
wind which made the event all the more of a shock.¶ Thankfully no-one
was hurt, but a car sustained damage and a wheelie bin was crushed.Police and the
Fire Service were quickly on the scene and took control of the situation.Considerable
disruption followed as the road was blocked for some time as the tree was cleared.
Serious disruption continued for five more days for many residents, who had lost phone
and broadband services, whilst Openreach repaired phone lines and replaced damaged
poles. The safety of other chestnuts, especially near roads and houses, should now be
checked urgently as many are nearing the end of their natural lives.
