Background and Objectives
Clarins is interested by the impact of environment on human health.
Fondation Arthritis often funded studies on genetics of rheumatisms. But environmental
factors have also a real impact on these diseases: so it is interesting to better understand their
mechanisms of action.
For the first time, Fondation ARTHRITIS will launch an international call for proposals, co-
funded and supported by CLARINS and all its subsidiaries worldwide. CLARINS will only
participate in communication about the project but not in the scientific project and will not
request any rights on the results.

                                                                                                1

Focus of the Call
•!The project will involve a consortium of 2 or maximum 3 academic research laboratories,
preferentially including a non-French (preferentially European) laboratory. The consortium
will submit a common project proposal with a researcher or teacher-researcher acting as
coordinator(1) of the project. The coordinator will be French.

•!This Call for Proposals aims to accelerate research on inflammatory rheumatic diseases.

•!This Call for Proposals will specifically emphasize on the following area « Impact of
environment on inflammatory rheumatic diseases (eg: food, sport, pollution, drugs,
microbiota, …). The final goal, clearly identified, is to impact the patient’s life by any type
of results. Ideally, the project should complement the published epidemiological data with
in vitro experimental results. In order to restrict the use of animals, such models can be
evoked as validation tools but no funding for this part will be allowed.!

•!Concrete results are expected. They will be annually presented for the following of the
project. The aim will be to communicate annually to the general population in order to
involve it in the project’s funding.
Expectations of the Fondation Arthritis at 3 years are to « identify or confirm the role or the
importance of an environmental factor on one or several inflammatory rheumatic diseases ».

•!Indicative total funding from Fondation Arthritis is € 800 000 (including taxes) for a period
of three years. Complementary funding already obtained or requested by the researchers,
would be appreciated. The total budget of the project could reach 1 to 1.5 M€ (including
  taxes).

•!Duration of the project: 36 months.

•!The grant must be exclusively used to finance the presented and selected project, including:
  - The operating costs (consumables, reagents, media, etc ...)
  - Equipment
  - Mission expenses related to the project (travels, congress fees,…)
  - Human resources (2)

•!Collaborations on the project with additional national or international researchers are
possible but these researchers will not be funded.

•!All eligible proposals will be evaluated and scored by a European jury appointed in
partnership with Clarins to establish a ranking order. The jury will pay particular attention
to the feasibility, synergy, and the value of the proposal.

•!The jury will be composed of
               A President (European high-profile scientist)
The Scientific board of the Fondation Arthritis (12 members)
               A Clarins head of marketing
               A Clarins scientist
               A scientist from a non-French Arthritis foundation
Each application will be evaluated by 3 international experts in the field.

                                                                                               2
