The Project
The Canberra station (NS12) is an elevated Mass Rapid
Transit (MRT) station on the North South Line located
along Canberra Link in Sembawang, Singapore. The
station will be linked to Canberra Plaza via an elevated
sheltered footbridge built across Canberra Link. It
is estimated that approximately 17,000 households
will benefit from the station due to the upcoming Aesthetics
Housing and Development Board (HDB) public housing
developments, private condominiums as well as landed
properties (Sembawang Springs Estate) located near the
station. RSP Architects approached Kingspan to design
and develop an aesthetic and functional roof system for
the station.

roof build-up. In addition to the acoustic and thermal performance requirements, as the structure being a public transport General Manager - South East Asia
facility, the lining material had to meet Class O of the Building Standards, and must pass BS476 Part 6 & 7. The KingZip Linea

The Construction
Due to the fact that the station was being built on a live and operational track, LTA and SMRT implemented several measures
to improve safety such as limiting major works to non-service hours, sheltering the tracks with a temporary enclosure during
the construction of the roof and creating a full-scale mock-up of the station structure and roof to determine the safest
process of construction. In order to meet the safety requirements, the production of KingZip Linea Aluminium Standing Seam
roofing was carried out on-site after service hours of the live MRT track. Kingspan portable rollfromers and curving equipment
were fitted into shipping containers and mounted on a Kingspan trailer which allowed onsite manufacturing and smooth
curving of KingZip to the required radii. Manufactured KingZip Linea sheets were hoisted to the roof at early hours of the
morning and late evenings. This process eliminated the logistical burden of transporting 45 tons of aluminium roofing sheets
to the site by long trailers.
