CATHEDRAL VISION | We envision a Cathedral which is radically inclusive,
restlessly inquisitive, intentional, and inspired. This is a place that is called to
lead and to serve, in communion and in community, with healing, reconciliation,
and love, living out Christian mission. Together, we look to the power of Christ
for the transformation of each person, this city, and the world. We recognize our
history and traditions, while seeking renewal and growth. Curious and adaptable,
this chorus has room for all voices. Whoever you are, wherever you come from,
whomever you love, and regardless of what you may bring or are searching for,
you are welcome here.

All Thanks be to God.
Silence is kept.
The Collect
Leader God of love,
you gave your Son to be a light for revelation to the Gentiles
and for glory to your people Israel.
With Simeon and Anna and all who hail redemption’s happy dawn,
may we sing your praise and proclaim salvation in Jesus Christ,
                   your Word made flesh.
All Amen.

Thanksgiving
Presider Let us give thanks to God our Creator.
All It is right to offer thanks and praise.
Presider Blessed are you, Sovereign God,
our light and our salvation, to you be glory and praise for ever.
You gave your Christ as a light to the nations,
and through the anointing of the Spirit
you established us as a royal priesthood.

                                                                                   christ church cathedral 3
As you call us into your marvellous light,
may our lives bear witness to your truth
and our lips never cease to proclaim your praise.
Blessed be God: Source of all being, eternal Word and Holy Spirit.
All Blessed be God for ever.

The Psalm
Reader Psalm 84
How dear to me is your dwelling, *
			 O Lord of hosts!
My soul has a desire and longing for the courts of the Lord; *
my heart and my flesh rejoice in the living God.
The sparrow has found her a house *
and the swallow a nest where she may lay her young; by the side of your altars,
		 O Lord of hosts, *
			 my Sovereign and my God.
Happy are they who dwell in your house! *
They will always be praising you.
Happy are the people whose strength is in you, *
whose hearts are set on the pilgrims’ way!
Those who go through the desolate valley will find it a place of springs, *
for the early rains have covered it with pools of water.
They will climb from height to height, *
and you, the God of gods, will reveal yourself in Zion.
Lord God of hosts, hear my prayer; *
			 hearken, O God of Jacob.
Behold our defender, O God; *
and look upon the face of your anointed.
For one day in your courts is better than a thousand in my own room, *
and to stand at the threshold of the house of my God
than to dwell in the tents of the wicked.
For you, Lord God, are both sun and shield; *
			 you will give grace and glory;
no good thing will you withhold, O Lord, *
from those who walk with integrity.
		 O Lord of hosts, *
happy are they who put their trust in you!
Reader Glory to the holy and undivided Trinity, one God:
All as it was in the beginning, is now and will be for ever. Amen.

The Canticle
A Song of Mary (Luke 1:46-55)
Reader My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour, *
for you, Lord, have looked with favour on your lowly servant.
From this day all generations will call me blessed: *
you, the Almighty, have done great things for me and holy is your name.
You have mercy on those who fear you, *
			 from generation to generation.
You have shown strength with your arm *
and scattered the proud in their conceit,
casting down the mighty from their thrones *
			 and lifting up the lowly.

                                                                        christ church cathedral 5
You have filled the hungry with good things *
and sent the rich away empty.

to remember the promise of mercy,
the promise made to our ancestors, *
to Abraham and his children for ever.
Reader Glory to God, Source of all being, eternal Word and Holy Spirit:
All as it was in the beginning, is now and will be for ever. Amen.
The Nicene Creed
Presider Let us confess our faith, as we say,
All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven:
by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,
                      and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
                      On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures;
he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father. With the Father and the Son
he is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Litany (said or sung)
Prayer focus for St. Brigid’s Day
Leader The Saint or Holy One we turn to for inspiration at this time is St. Brigid of Kildare.
Long ago at the monastery where Brigid was Abbess, the sisters kept a sacred fire burning.
What was that fire, and what could it be to us, today?
All The flame is the presence and the glory of God.
The Holy Spirit; Comfort in darkness; Hope and warmth.
The perpetual flame of undying love.

6 st. brigid’s | evening prayer
Leader God kindles a flame in our hearts, and speaks words of love to our souls:
All                   Set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm;
for love is strong as death, passion fierce as the grave,
its flashes are flashes of fire a raging flame.
Leader We enter into the first silence, to meditate on love’s fire.
Silence & Stillness
Leader The Celtic Christians used to say Brigid was there,
lighting the way with a lamp for Mary and Joseph as they carried baby Jesus to the Temple.
Although it was dark and windy, the flame never failed.
What do we carry in our arms to the sanctuary of God?
What is it that is absorbing all our energy, our effort, our love, our concern?
What is it that is so precious to us?
What new things, new projects, new people are on our minds and hearts?
Leader We enter into the second silence, to meditate on what we bring.
Silence & Stillness
During silence, write/draw on paper provided.
Leader Brigid, they say, was midwife at Mary’s birth of Jesus,
on hand with water and towels and common-sense kindness,
and she helped Mary nurse him in his early days.
Of course, it’s not ‘possible’, chronologically,
for Brigid to have been with the holy family.
But metaphorically, in the deep language of story,
she is embodying an aspect of the Midwife God
                      — encountered by many in the accounts of the Bible —
who is there beside us in our pain and our struggling.
Who are the midwives of our lives?
Who is it that eases our labour and makes our work possible?
Leader We enter into the third silence to meditate on supportive people in our lives.
Silence & Stillness
Leader God is present with us and makes use of real, earthy, ordinary things
	 — towels, bowls of water, animal troughs and bales of straw —
to bring light into the world through us in real, earthy ways.
What are the objects and circumstances of our daily lives that allow us to earn our bread,
keep our homes sound, our bodies whole and clothed, our journeys safe?
What in our daily lives does God use to bring love into the world through us?
Leader We enter into the fourth silence to meditate on ‘things’ which help us.
Silence & Stillness

                                                                                      christ church cathedral 7
Leader Let’s all extend a hand in blessing and say together: The Dedication
                      (adapted from Carmina Gadelica 42)
All Thanks to Thee, O God,
who shepherds us from winter gloom to the gateway of spring,
each soul-shrine to bless by the love of the pure lamb of everlasting joy.
And for every gift of grace thou bestowest on us,
our thoughts, our words, our deeds, our tools,
our loves, our hopes, our helpers and our selves,
we dedicate all to Thee and the bright flame of thy presence,
thou Being who brought us all to birth. Amen
Leader We take a moment now to offer our prayers of Intercession and Thanksgiving
aloud or in the silence of our hearts.
Among these concerns it is appropriate to remember:
 • the unity of the church;
 • the peace of the world;
 • the healing of the sick;
 • the revelation of Christ to those from whom his glory is hidden; and
 • all who travel.
Silence & Stillness
Leader God of Anna and Simeon,
whose law makes known the gift of life,
whose love exposes our hardness of heart:
by your Spirit, may we receive your faithful word
                      and know your reconciling presence offered for all the world;
through Jesus Christ, the Light and Glory of God.
All Amen.
The Lord’s Prayer
Presider Believing in the promises of God
and gathering our prayers and praises into one,
let us pray as our Saviour taught us.
All Our Mother/Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours,
                  now and forever. Amen.

Sending Song Be Thou My Vision (CP 505) ³

Closing Prayer
Presider We have heard how the Saint at this time is Brigid
and the Gospel of this time is the bringing of the Christ-child to the temple.
We see around us that the season now is the beginning of spring
with the first new shoots and the birthing of the lambs.
So let us pray to God, the one, as it is written in Deuteronomy,
who births us, and as it is written in the Psalms,
who is there like a midwife to assist at our birth
and all our moments of creativity and labour, throughout our lives:
                 Amen.

                                                                               christ church cathedral 9
Blessing the Community
Presider May God our Mother, who led the wise men by the shining of a star
to find the Christ, the Light from light,
lead you also in your pilgrimage to find the Light in all whom you meet.
All Amen.
Presider May Christ, who sends us to the nations,
give us the power of the Spirit.
All Amen.
The Dismissal
Presider Let us bless the Lord.
All Thanks be to God.
