Message from the Team
Welcome to our first newsletter for 2021. We have kicked off the year with some great
activities and projects including a babysitting course, kids active days and the
community mosaic project. Check out some of the great work being done with
mosaics on the front page, even the kids have gotten involved. It’s not too late to get
creative and show us what Childers means to you. Tiles will be placed in the
community space at the entrance to the centre when completed. A room will be
available every Thursday if you want to drop in and work on a tile.
Playgroups are back again for the year with some new families joining in on all the fun.
Healthy lunch boxes and basic first aid for parents are just two of the great activities
coming up for families. If you have children under 5 years we would love for you to get
involved in our playgroups or parenting groups.
We would like to extend a big thank especially our wonderful volunteers especially in
the Meals on Wheels program who have continued to provide a vital service to our
community throughout the recent pandemic and into 2021, always with a smile on
their faces.
Don’t forget to keep up to date on what is happening at the Centre, like our Facebook
page Childers Neighbourhood Centre. Looking forward to enjoying 2021 with you all.
Debra and the team.

Message from the Team
We hope that you all had a lovely Christmas and New year.
It was great to see so many children and their families attend our Keep Kids Active
event. Children enjoyed interacting with Andrew from Childers AFL and the water play
was a hit with the children on such a warm day and them not wanting to leave.
Also, a big thank you goes out to Rotary for cooking the BBQ lunch for us all to enjoy.
We are full steam ahead for this year with upcoming events, such as a colour fun
session, Roushini’s cooking classes celebrating Harmony day & a healthy lunchbox
workshop.
If you are wanting more information about what the Child and Family Support service
does or you feel you need someone to talk to about the many facets of parenting,
please feel free to come and talk to us at playgroup, at the Neighbourhood Centre or
call 4130 4690.
Debra and Chloe.

6 Childers Neighbourhood Centre Community Care NewsImportance of Reading
It is never too early to start
reading to a child!
When a child is born, their brain is not
completely developed and will
continue to develop over the course of
their life. Reading to an infant helps
create brain pathways and lay the
groundwork for language
development.
Reading teaches sharing and
involvement. Reading always brings
closeness and supports the child and Handy Reading Tips & Tricks

Hello and welcome to 2021 – it’s hard to believe that we’ve been back for nearly a
month already and all services are operating as usual. Last year was quite a tough
one at times with services reduced or closed for a while so we still need to be
mindful of the situation and take the recommended precautions and to remember the
COVID-19 related questions on the contact form when workers enter your home are
still applicable.
Remember to let us know if you are not going to be home for any scheduled services
so that alternative arrangements can be made. Also if you have pets, please make
sure they are restrained before and during the time workers are present.
During the warmer months of the year, if you have any in-home services especially
Domestic Assistance, we ask that you open your windows and put the fans or air
conditioning on before staff arrive. Staff visit multiple homes each day and get quite
hot when working and giving them a comfortable work environment is greatly
appreciated. It is also very important that we all remember to keep up our own water
intake and to keep cool during the warmer part of the day to limit dehydration and
heat exhaustion. Jeanette
My Aged Care 1800 200 422 – If you want to access government subsidised aged
care services, you need to check your eligibility for a face-to-face assessment and
register with My Aged Care. To do this call My Aged Care yourself or someone else
(a ‘representative’) can talk to My Aged Care for you.
Alternatively, you can come into the Childers
Neighbourhood Centre where you can be assisted with
your call to My Aged Care or you can apply online
https://www.myagedcare.gov.au/assessment/apply-online
There are two types of representatives:
1. Regular representative – if you can give consent for someone else to speak
and act for you, you can set them up as your regular representative. You may
also appoint your regular representative as a primary contact so they are the
first point of contact for My Aged Care.
You may change or cancel the appointment of a regular representative at any
time by calling My Aged Care of 1800 200 422.
2. Authorised representative – is needed if you are not capable of providing
consent for someone else to speak for you and you need help with My Aged
Care. Legal documents are needed to put in place an authorised
representative so that My Aged Care knows they can legally represent you, e.g.
a guardianship. The documents depend on the rules in each state or territory.

Support for Carers
If you provide support for a loved one there is help available for you too.
A carer is someone who helps a family member or friend with grocery shopping,
preparing meals, personal care, finances, emotional support, administering medicine. If
you or someone you know provides assistance to a family member or friend, support is
only a phone call away.
By calling Carer Gateway, you will be connected with a new Australia-wide network of
Carer Gateway service providers who will talk through
what you need and help you to find local services and
support to help you. For free supports available
through Carer Gateway, phone 1800 422 737 or visit
https://www.carergateway.gov.au/
ISIS COMMUNITY CARE provides entry level support services for frail, older people to assist
and re-enable clients to live independently in a safe home environment within their own
community. We also provide assistance to carers to maintain their caring role by offering
respite services so that the carer can take a break. We are funded through the Commonwealth
