AS WE GATHER It is Good Shepherd Sunday, and the familiar twenty-third Psalm
is echoed throughout our worship. Our Lord went through the valley of the shadow of
death in our place, leading from death to eternal life. There is work to do before we
get to eternity, for following our Shepherd entails confessing our faith even when
death’s shadow falls on us. It means vigilance against wolves attacking amid Christ’s
flock, as Paul warns in the First Reading. But in his vision, John tells us that Christ is
now the victorious Lamb on His eternal throne. We can be confident that what we
believe by faith we shall know by experience in the unending joy of the Father’s
house.

WELCOME and ANNOUNCEMENTS

                                                     T T PREPARATION T T

PROCESSIONAL HYMN "He’s Risen, He’s Risen” LSB 480 vv.1-4
He’s risen, He’s risen, Christ Jesus, the Lord;
He opened death’s prison, the_incarnate, true Word.
Break forth, hosts of heaven, in jubilant song
And earth, sea, and mountain their praises prolong.

The foe was triumphant when on Calvary
The Lord of creation was nailed to the tree.
In Satan’s domain did the hosts shout and jeer,
For Jesus was slain, whom the evil ones fear.

But short was their triumph; the Savior arose,
And death, hell, and Satan He vanquished, His foes.
The conquering Lord lifts His banner on high;
He lives, yes, He lives, and will nevermore die.

O, where is your sting, death? We fear you no more;
Christ rose, and now open is fair Eden’s door.
For all our transgressions His blood does atone;
Redeemed and forgiven, we now are His own.

P: Alleluia! Christ is risen!
C: He is risen indeed. Alleluia!

OPENING SENTENCES Psalm 23:1, 6b; Revelation 7:17

will be their shepherd, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.
C: And I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

CONFESSION and ABSOLUTION
P: Our help is in the name of the Lord,

C: and You forgave the iniquity of my sin.
P: Lord, our God,
C: we confess that we have strayed from hearing the voice of Your Son, our
Shepherd, who went through death to eternal life for us. We have failed to
trust in You fully. We have sinned in our thoughts, words, and deeds. Forgive

P: Fellow sheep within Christ’s fold, our Lord Jesus was God’s sacrificial Lamb and
has gone through death, paying for the sins of all people, and He now reigns in

the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.

PRAYER OF THE DAY
P: Let us pray. Almighty God, merciful Father, since You have wakened from death
the Shepherd of Your sheep, grant us Your Holy Spirit that when we hear the voice

with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C: Amen.

                     T T SERVICE OF THE WORD T T

FIRST READING Acts 20:17-35
(Paul commends the word of grace to the church overseers as they care for the flock.)
17
Now from Miletus [Paul] sent to Ephesus and called the elders of the church to
come to him. 18And when they came to him, he said to them: “You yourselves know
how I lived among you the whole time from the first day that I set foot in Asia,
19
serving the Lord with all humility and with tears and with trials that happened to me
through the plots of the Jews; 20how I did not shrink from declaring to you anything
that was profitable, and teaching you in public and from house to house, 21testifying
both to Jews and to Greeks of repentance toward God and of faith in our Lord Jesus
Christ. 22And now, behold, I am going to Jerusalem, constrained by the Spirit, not
knowing what will happen to me there, 23except that the Holy Spirit testifies to me in
every city that imprisonment and afflictions await me. 24But I do not account my life
of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the
ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of
God. 25And now, behold, I know that none of you among whom I have gone about
proclaiming the kingdom will see my face again. 26Therefore I testify to you this day
that I am innocent of the blood of all of you, 27for I did not shrink from declaring to
you the whole counsel of God. 28Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the
flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God,
which he obtained with his own blood. 29I know that after my departure fierce wolves
will come in among you, not sparing the flock; 30and from among your own selves
will arise men speaking twisted things, to draw away the disciples after them.
31
Therefore be alert, remembering that for three years I did not cease night or day to
admonish everyone with tears. 32And now I commend you to God and to the word of
his grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all
those who are sanctified. 33I coveted no one’s silver or gold or apparel. 34You
yourselves know that these hands ministered to my necessities and to those who were
with me. 35In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must
help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is
more blessed to give than to receive.’”

                                              5
L: This is the Word of the Lord.
C: Thanks be to God.

EPISTLE Revelation 7:9-17 (On the heavenly throne, John sees the Lamb who has
conquered death and become the Shepherd.)
9
After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from
every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne
and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, 10and
crying out with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne,
and to the Lamb!” 11And all the angels were standing around the throne and around
the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne
and worshiped God, 12saying, “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and
thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen.”
13
Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, “Who are these, clothed in white robes,
and from where have they come?” 14I said to him, “Sir, you know.” And he said to me,
“These are the ones coming out of the great tribulation. They have washed their robes
and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. 15“Therefore they are before the
throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple; and he who sits on the
throne will shelter them with his presence. 16They shall hunger no more, neither thirst
anymore; the sun shall not strike them, nor any scorching heat. 17For the Lamb in the
midst of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of living
water, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”
L: This is the Word of the Lord.
C: Thanks be to God.

ALLELUIA VERSE LSB 173

HOLY GOSPEL John 10:22-30 (Jesus affirms that no one following His voice can be
snatched from Him. He and the Father are one.)
P: The Holy Gospel according to St. John the tenth chapter.
C: Glory to You, O Lord.

                                           6
22
At that time the Feast of Dedication took place at Jerusalem. It was winter, 23and
Jesus was walking in the temple, in the colonnade of Solomon. 24So the Jews
gathered around him and said to him, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you
are the Christ, tell us plainly.” 25Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not
believe. The works that I do in my Father’s name bear witness about me, 26but you do
not believe because you are not part of my flock. 27My sheep hear my voice, and I
know them, and they follow me. 28I give them eternal life, and they will never perish,
and no one will snatch them out of my hand. 29My Father, who has given them to me,
is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. 30I and
the Father are one.”
P: This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C: Praise to You, O Christ.

CHILDREN’S MESSAGE

HYMN OF THE DAY “See, What a Morning”
See, what a morning, gloriously bright
With the dawning of hope in Jerusalem
Folded the grave-clothes, tomb filled with light
As the angels announce, "Christ is risen!"
See God's salvation plan Wrought in love, borne in pain, paid in sacrifice
Fulfilled in Christ, the Man For He lives, Christ is risen from the dead!
See Mary weeping, "Where is He laid?"
As in sorrow, she turns from the empty tomb
Hears a voice speaking, calling her name
It's the Master, the Lord raised to life again!
The voice that spans the years Speaking life, stirring hope, bringing peace to us
Will sound 'til He appears For He lives, Christ is risen from the dead!
One with the Father, Ancient of Days
Through the Spirit who clothes faith with certainty
Honor and blessing, glory and praise
To the King crowned with pow'r and authority!
And we are raised with Him Death is dead, love has won, Christ has conquered
And we shall reign with Him For He lives, Christ is risen from the dead!

SERMON ‘I’ve never learned from a man who agreed with me.’
                                       –Robert A. Heinlein

                                           7
NICENE CREED
I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all
things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son
of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light,
very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the
Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation
came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary
and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He
suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the
Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father.
And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead whose
kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver
of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the
Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I
believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism
for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life
T of the world to come. Amen.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH
P: Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people
according to their needs. Gracious God, You are exalted over all things in heaven
and on earth. In Your mercy, You shower us with blessings of both body and soul as
You care for Your creation. Enable us to see Your hands at work in our midst. Lord,
   in Your mercy,
C: hear our prayer.
P: Giver of life, You renew our souls through the power of Your Holy Spirit as we
dwell in the shadow of Your wings. As we continue to celebrate the joy of our
Savior’s Easter victory, grant that Your Church on earth always speaks Your Word
with boldness and confidence, like the first eyewitnesses of Christ’s resurrection.
   Lord, in Your mercy,
C: hear our prayer.
P: In Your Son’s earthly ministry, people brought to Him all those who were sick and
suffering that He might touch and heal them. This ministry of healing continued
through His disciples in the earliest church. Even now, we know that Jesus heals,
renews, and restores through the Means of Grace He has provided for our benefit.
Place Your healing hand upon those for in need, especially . . .. Lord, in Your
   mercy,
C: hear our prayer.
P: Prepare the hearts of all those who will receive You at Your Table this day, O Lord.
Help us to cast aside all bitterness and pride, laying our burdens down at the foot
of Christ’s cross. Because He lives in triumph over death and the grave, we
experience His life-giving presence as we are gathered in His name to remember
                                           8
His sacrifice. Grant that all who share in His body and blood look upon Him, trust
in Him. Lord, in Your mercy,
C: hear our prayer.
P: We bring all these prayers before You, gracious Father, in the name of Him who is
risen from the dead and reigns with You forever as our Lord and God: Jesus
   Christ, our Lord.
C: Amen.

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING
P: Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom
You created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be
our Savior. With repentant joy we receive the salvation accomplished for us by the
all-availing sacrifice of His body and His blood on the cross. Gathered in the
name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, to forgive, renew, and
strengthen us with Your Word and Spirit. Grant us faithfully to eat His body and

“I Am Jesus’ Little Lamb” LSB 740
I am Jesus’ little lamb, Ever glad at heart I am;
For my Shepherd gently guides me, Knows my need and well provides me,
Loves me ev’ry day the same, Even calls me by my name.
Day by day, at home, away, Jesus is my staff and stay.
When I hunger, Jesus feeds me, Into pleasant pastures leads me;
When I thirst, He bids me go Where the quiet waters flow.
Who so happy as I am, Even now the Shepherd’s lamb?
And when my short life is ended, By His angel host attended,
He shall fold me to His breast, There within His arms to rest.

RECESSIONAL HYMN “The Day of Resurrection” LSB 478
The day of resurrection! Earth, tell it out abroad,
The passover of gladness, The passover of God.
From death to life eternal, From sin’s dominion free,
Our Christ has brought us over With hymns of victory.

Let hearts be purged of evil That we may see aright
The Lord in rays eternal Of resurrection light
And, list’ning to His accents, May hear, so calm and plain,
His own “All hail!” and, hearing, May raise the victor strain.

Now let the heav’ns be joyful, Let earth its song begin,
Let all the world keep triumph And all that is therein.
Let all things, seen and unseen, Their notes of gladness blend;
For Christ the Lord has risen, Our joy that has no end!

All praise to God the Father, All praise to God the Son,
All praise to God the Spirit, Eternal Three in One!
Let all the ransomed number Fall down before the throne
And honor, pow’r, and glory Ascribe to God alone!

ence and received both forgiveness for my many sins and the assurance of Your love in
Jesus Christ. I thank You for this undeserved grace and ask You to keep me in faith un-
til, with all Your saints, I inherit eternal salvation; through Jesus Christ, my Lord.
Amen.
