ART EXTENSION
Years 7–12
These classes will have a focus on experimentation and extension where longer time periods than regular classes and smaller
numbers will enable a focus on exploring and refining diverse art skills.

The areas explored in this class will vary from term to term.

• In Term 1 the focus will be on photography where students will explore film based photography with manual analogue
cameras and darkroom processing of photographs. Students will also explore digital photography and Photoshop
    manipulation.

• In Term 2 the focus will be on painting and drawing. In this area students will explore various drawing media such as
charcoal, pencil and pastel whilst also developing skills in the use of oil and watercolour painting.

• In Term 3 the focus will be on media production where script writing, storyboarding and film production and editing will
be explored and/or Ceramics (numbers dependent)

• In Term 4 the focus will be on printmaking where advanced lino-printing using reduction techniques and screen printing
will enable extensions into mixed media and wrapping and card production.

COMMUNICATION AND SPEECH TRAINING
Years 5–12
The aim of the program is to produce confident, articulate young women with highly developed interpersonal and presentation
skills. Specific objectives include the development and enhancement of a pleasant, unstrained vocal tone, the promotion of
clarity of speech and the fostering of oral interpretation of literature.

The workshops also place emphasis on creativity and the exploration of dramatic skills. The work may be videoed for group
feedback or performed before a small audience. The content of the workshops provides the necessary foundation for entry into
the AMEB programs in group and solo work and then into examinations.

Communication and Speech is available to students from Years 5 to 12. Lessons will take place during school hours.

Term 1: Eight weeks of introductory sessions in preparation for the following three terms. (Students may elect to attend Term 1
to ascertain if they are prepared to make the commitment for the following three terms).

Terms 2, 3 and 4 students must commit to the full AMEB Program of three terms.

lesson. 20 min lessons are only available for students in Prep - Year 1.

Ensemble Program
Lauriston offers a broad range of ensembles from prep-12, including auditioned chamber groups. From Year 5, all music
students are required to participate in an appropriate Lauriston ensemble. Regular lessons are required for students in year 5-8
to participate in an instrumental ensemble. Students in years 10-12 who wish to participate in an ensemble, but no longer have
regular lessons, are required to have ensemble maintenance lessons before concert commitments. More information regarding
ensembles is available on the Schoolbox Music page.

Number of Lessons
Students receive 32 lessons per year which are billed as 8 lessons per term. Adjustments to accounts are made at the end of
each semester or upon termination of lessons. Calculations of final accounts are based on the attendance roll. Parental consent,
in writing to the Music School, is required to exceed 32 lessons per year.

A school for life.

  Missed Lessons
When one lesson is missed an email will be sent informing parents/guardians of the absence and reminding the student of the
  next lesson time.

If a student is absent at an official School excursion/incursion, no charge will apply. However, students are encouraged to
inform their instrumental teacher if they become aware of excursions or tests which may impact on their scheduled lessons. If a
student is ill, the usual lesson charge will apply if 24 hours notice is not given.

  Long Term absences
Written notification to the Music School is necessary to defer or suspend lesson/s in the case of long-term absences. Four
week’s notice is required for planned absences (e.g. Holidays). Please contact the Music Office for unplanned absences (e.g.
  long-term illness or injury).

Teachers are contracted for an entire year based on student enrolments and as such may not be able to make up lessons
missed due to family holidays, illness or forgetfulness.

  Movement to and from Lessons
Prep – Year 4 students are collected from and returned to their classroom by their instrumental teacher.

Students from Years 5 onwards are expected to make their own way to their music lessons. It is the student’s responsibility to
  remember their lesson.

  Purchasing Instruments
The Music Department is happy to give advice regarding the purchase of instruments and where the best prices are available.

  Second Instrument
If your daughter wishes to learn more than one instrument, please consult with the relevant Head of Department for advice.
Students are encouraged to focus on one instrument only before Year 3.

  Shared Lessons
Shared lessons are available only when two students of similar standard and ability are enrolled. The Music Department may
review this as appropriate. If one student discontinues then the remaining student will be required to move to individual lessons
unless another student of an appropriate age and standard enrols.

A school for life.

Timetabling
Music lessons are usually given during class time on a rotating cycle. Lessons outside class time follow these priorities:

1. VCE/IB students.
2. If a student learns two instruments, one of these is scheduled out of class time.
3. Lesson times at Blairholme are dependent on room availability.
4. Parent requests for out of school times are then filled when possible. Please note that our program is a day program and
staff are required to teach throughout the school day.

Theory/Music Craft Lessons
Theory & Music Craft lessons enhance students’ practical abilities, and are recommended for students studying AMEB Grade
4 and above. These lessons include music analysis, aural training and music literacy. Students wishing to study music in
VCE/IB are encouraged to take Theory lessons as pathway to success in these years. Please note Theory examinations are a
prerequisite for practical AMEB examinations at or above Grade 6 level.

Getting the most out of your lessons
Students are required to attend all the regularly scheduled lessons with their music, instrument, and other necessary
equipment. Regular practice is important in ensuring progress. Your daughter’s teacher will advise on the appropriate
frequency and duration of practice sessions. Families are encouraged to engage with their daughter’s music at home,
observing practice or asking them to perform a piece for you every few weeks. Music students should have a dedicated
practice space where possible, equipped with music stand and stationery as required.

Assessment
Music students receive semester reports alongside their academic subjects. In addition to this, there are a number of
assessment opportunities available to students throughout the year, including internal and external (AMEB and other external
providers). These will be arranged in consultation with the teacher and Head of Department.

Terms and Conditions
An application to participate in this Co-Curricular Program, run by Lauriston will only be considered if all tuition and other fees
and charges have been paid by the due date. Where fees remain outstanding and no acceptable payment plan is in place, the
school reserves the right to exclude the student from participating in this activity.

Parents are urged to collect their child promptly at the end of each rowing session.

Careful consideration should be given before students take extra sporting programs. Too often students are keen to play a
sport and when they realise that hard work, application and commitment are required, their interest wanes rapidly.

Skipping is a fabulous sport that incorporates both freestyle (skills performed
to music) and speed elements (timed events where the skipper's steps are
counted). It is one of the best forms of improving fitness with 10 minutes of
non-stop skipping equated to a 20 minute jog as well as improves flexibility,
balance, coordination and builds muscle strength.
The Skipz program provides qualified and experienced coaches who work with
all Year and skill levels to provide a full cardio workout to their favourite music
tracks with a variety of tricks and challenges that engages all ages and genders.
This programme is running at Lauriston Girls' School
