                                      Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
One day when my children were young, we went on a walk around the neighborhood. We encountered two girls who
were about five and six years old. The elder child had her arm around the younger and was saying convincingly, “I’ll tell
you how it goes. I’ll tell you what to do, and you do it.” The five-year-old, all eyes, nodded at the wisdom of these words.
I smiled as I thought, “It would be nice if the world were so simple.”
Our readings today present the deceivingly simple solution to demands and temptations. It’s as though God is saying, “I
will tell you how it goes.”
In the face of war and devastation, Zechariah shows us the God of peace, who rides a donkey but whose justice lasts
forever.
In the face of hunger, anger, and oppression, the psalmist prays to God, who is slow to anger and abounds in mercy, who
raises up the fallen and satisfies the desire of every living thing, and whose reign lasts forever.
In the face of death of body and spirit, Paul talks about the life that can be ours if we but open ourselves to the Spirit of
God.
And Jesus—seeing that we are burdened by temptations, the expectations of others, and the laws that oppress rather
than help us live—invites us to become like children, to take off the heavy yoke that binds and put on the yoke of
Christ, a yoke that gives life.
Is he telling us what to do? Yes.
All that’s left is for us to do it.
                                                                 Mary Katharine Deeley | sundaybulletin@liguori.org

Jesus offers to share the burdens
                                of life with us...
Today’s Gospel contains one of the most encouraging invitations Jesus ever
issued, and at the same time it is an invitation that is too often overlooked by
his preoccupied followers of today. Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened,
and I will give you rest. What an offer! Artists and sculptors who have portrayed our
Savior above our altars with arms outstretched before us have captured that invitation
most vividly.

The Lord uses an unusual parable to complete the invitation: Take my yoke upon you…
and you will find rest for yourselves. For my yoke is easy, and my burden light. A yoke is
a double harness made of wood that is custom-made and placed on the necks of a pair
of oxen to enable them to pull a plow or a wagon together.

Jesus was known throughout Galilee as the carpenter’s son. The commentaries on the
Scriptures strongly suggest that the young Jesus learned a few things about
woodworking from his foster-father in the shop in Nazareth. A smooth-fitting yoke to
place on the shoulders of a pair of oxen is something Jesus could probably speak about
from experience.

When Jesus says we should take his yoke upon us and learn from him, he is offering to
share our burdens with us the way draft animals support one another by pulling together.
With Jesus helping us, our burden is lighter; and the yokes made by him are a perfect fit
to make our travel together through life easier.

In a society which fosters individualism and independence, even believers sometimes fail
to take advantage of Jesus’ offer in the Gospel. Into every life, sooner or later, labors and
burdens show themselves. They can be in the form of health problems, family disharmony
or financial difficulties. They can arise from past evils that still haunt us, from the present
worries that distract us or from insecurities about the future that immobilize us. In
whatever form or at whatever time they appear, Jesus shares this invitation with us –
Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.

Jesus praises God who revealed to little ones, to the meek and humble, what had been
hidden from the scholars, the sophisticated and the religious experts. It was the simple
and uneducated people who were most receptive to the Gospel and who grasped the
significance of Jesus’ preaching. Jesus makes clear his relationship with God the Father,
and the Father’s desire to be revealed to us through the Son. Yet, Jesus describes
himself as meek and humble of heart and offers to share our burdens, giving us rest. Let
us take to heart his words, Take my yoke upon you and learn from me…For my yoke is
easy, and my burden light.

                                             Holiness is our daily task...
                                                         (By Archbishop JOSÉ H. GOMEZ)

Holiness is the heart of our relationship with Jesus and holiness is the heart of our mission as Christians. Yet
holiness is still often misunderstood. I still hear people talk as if holiness is something only for special
people, something that’s beyond our reach, something only saints can achieve.

This is not true! Holiness is the beautiful destiny that God intends for everybody. This is one of the truths that we learn from our
reflection on the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The heart of Jesus is the source of all life and holiness. As we celebrate this great feast this
week, we should reflect on the love that Jesus has for us and his beautiful intention for our lives.

Jesus called each of us to be perfect as our Father in heaven is perfect. St. Paul told us: “This is the will of God — your
sanctification.” This is what the Second Vatican Council called the “universal call to holiness.”

We are still sinners. That doesn’t change — it’s the reality of the human condition. But because Jesus is holy, sin and weakness do
not have the last word in our lives. Because Jesus is holy, sinners can become saints.

The love of Jesus, which he gives to us through the Church’s sacraments, purifies us and joins us to his own life. And his life is holy
and divine. So when we share in the life of Jesus, we share in his holiness and his divinity. This is what it means to be a child of
God.

So we are not born holy. God makes us holy — through his grace and our desire to correspond with his grace. He changes our
heart, day by day, if we choose to walk with Jesus. His path is the path of holiness. In practical terms, the way to grow in holiness
is to imitate Jesus — to follow in his footsteps and try to live in this world as he did, with his same attitudes and reactions. For each
of us, becoming holy is a process of trying to be more like Jesus each day.

Because we are all different, holiness will look different for everyone. But we all seek holiness in the same way — by trying in
every moment to cooperate with God’s will and to let him act through our words and deed. We seek holiness by trying to serve our
neighbors and give glory of God in everything.

Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, has said, “Do not be afraid of holiness! Do not be afraid to aim high, to let yourself be loved and
purified by God.”

Holiness is our task, our vocation. Of every one of us. Holiness is not something heroic or extraordinary. It is ordinary. It comes in
being cheerful, doing our normal work, carrying out our daily duties, no matter how small, with love for God and concern for
others.

It is all about witness, about the imitation of Jesus Christ, taking his way, following his path. To be a child of God means that God
wants us to grow up to be saints. As we know, saints are not just those men and women who the Church recognizes and canonizes
as saints. St. Paul said that “all God’s beloved … are called to be saints.”

And God does not call us to something that he will not help us achieve. This is the work of the Church — to show us the way of
Jesus and to sanctify us and make us holy. To make us saints.

The Church gives us the path to holiness — especially through the encounter with Christ in the Eucharist and Confession. If we let
ourselves, God will use these means to change us — to make us people who have hearts of mercy, people who are kind and humble,
meek and patient.

So God is calling all of us to be saints. Saints of the everyday and missionaries of his love — to bear witness to his love in the
ordinary events and activities of our daily lives.

We are not here only to seek our own holiness. God wants to sanctify the whole world through his Church, through the lives of each
one of his children. So he wants us to do our part — to spread his Kingdom of holiness and justice, love and peace.

So this week let’s make that our prayer for one another — that we grow in our desire to be holy and to help others to become holy.
Let’s make holiness our hope and make a new commitment to follow the path of Jesus and to let his love work in our lives.

And let us ask our Blessed Mother Mary to help us to grow in our awareness that we are children of God, who are made for
holiness.
Come, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest

MISSION STATEMENT
We, the Catholic Christian Community of St. Philomena Parish, graciously embrace the saving mission of Jesus Christ by proclaiming the
Gospel, celebrating our faith through worship enriched by our multicultural traditions, and serving the community at large by sharing our gifts and
                                                                      talents.
We, as baptized members of the one body, acknowledge our commitment to Ministry and realize that this call is shared by everyone. Being
committed to the Vision of Vatican Council II, we recognize the priority of the family and support the on-going spiritual growth of our
community through evangelization, formation and catechesis.
We believe in faith in action and carry out the mission of Jesus in our daily lives by serving one another in love. We are dedicated in preserving the
sanctity and dignity of human life and answering the call to perform the spiritual and corporal works of mercy. In celebrating Christ's
presence among us through sacraments and worship, we in turn reach out to the surrounding community, giving freely and lovingly to all.
