PRAYER FOR THE NEW INCUMBENT
Bountiful God,
Give to this parish a faithful pastor
who will faithfully speak your word
and minister your sacraments;
an encourager who will equip our people for ministry
and enable us to fulfil our calling.
Give to those who will choose, wisdom,
discernment and patience
and to us give warm and generous hearts,
for Jesus Christ’s sake. Amen.

Charity of the Month – January
                                     CBM/Fred Hollows Foundation
The Fred Hollows Foundation has a very clear goal: we’re putting an end to avoidable blindness. When this
day comes, people in developing countries will get the same quality eye care the rest of the world takes for
granted – and we won’t stop until this is done.
CBM is an International Christian development organisation devoted to improving the lives of people with
disabilities in the poorest places on earth. Poverty and disability go hand in hand creating a cycle of inequali-
ty, isolation and exclusion that leads to the most extreme forms of poverty.

beauty, to be wise stewards of its resources, and to honour the connection the traditional custodians have
                                                with this land.

Thought for the Day ……

The old 1662 Prayer Book added to the title of the Epiphany – ‘the manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles’. It
would be the great theme of St. Paul who is seen to be the one who brought the ‘universality’ of the
Christian message, not just to the Jews but to all creation and peoples. Richard Rohr, whom I quote or refer
to often, speaks of the ‘unveiling’ of the God Truths – God in all creation, in every moment, in all instances
of life. The Epiphany story (found only in the Gospel of Matthew), is but another manifestation of the
eternal mystery that God is present for all – in all time and in the most unlikely way(s). The essence of the
Epiphany is the unveiling of truth which gives life to all.
This week we have seen the unveiling of unprecedented calamity in the United States where, through the
inaction of good people to deter the untruthfulness of the (soon to be the ‘ex’) President, has created chaos
not only in his own country, and potentially, for the whole world.
Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life. In total compassion for the creation he redeemed, Jesus would go
on in adulthood, to live that truth and die so that people may live. This historic week will long be
remembered, however, the unveiling of the truth of God incarnate in Jesus is eternal.
Love & Blessings Fr Stephen

                                                Prayer of the Week

                                                Almighty God,
who anointed Jesus at his baptism with the Holy Spirit and revealed him as your beloved Son:
inspire us, your children, who are born again of water and the Spirit,
           to surrender our lives to your service, that we may rejoice to be called your children;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Parish Notices and Events
PARISH ANNUAL REPORTS ARE DUE: Reminding all people who report on parish group activities that occur
throughout the year, reports are due as soon as possible. Your early attention to these reports will assist the
office to prepare the Parish Annual Report for the AGM and meet Diocesan reporting requirements. The
deadline for these reports is Friday 22 January 2021. Thank you for your assistance—Parish Office
Administrator.

AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM THE NOMINATORS: The Nominators are seeking suggestions from the
parishioners, for potential priests’ names to be put forward in consideration for the position of parish Rector.
There are many parishes at present without a priest. This reflects the current difficult situation which is
making the search for a suitable priest a challenging one. Your assistance with names is valuable input for
the Nominators.
The Parish Nominators would like to inform the Parishioners, that since there doesn’t appear a suitable
Priest for our Parish available at present in our Diocese, we have spread our search further afield into other
Dioceses. Continue to pray for us please. Thank you for your support

IMPORTANT NOTICE FROM THE TREASURER: In the near future Westpac Banking Corporation will cease to
provide agency banking services to Anglican Financial Services (ANFIN). Agency banking services will then
be provided by Australia Post.
This change will have little effect on the operation of the Parish bank account but it does mean that
parishioners who make direct deposits to the Parish account via internet banking will have to use new
account details.

THESE ACCOUNT DETAILS ARE NOW ACTIVE AND SHOULD BE USED FOR INTERNET BANKING DEPOSITS
MADE FROM 23 NOVEMBER 2020.

The account details for making internet deposits into the Parish account are:

Account name: Caloundra Anglican Parish
BSB: 704 901
Account Number: 00000110

All parishioners should feel free to contact me if they have any queries or require further information.

THANK YOU: A heartfelt bouquet of thanks to all those
                                        who donated wool in 2020.
Your kind donation helped many homeless
and needy people stay warm throughout
                                           the winter months.

CALLING FOR ADDITIONAL CLEANERS: The core band of dedicated cleaners need assistance. Would you please
consider contributing to this worthy activity once per month. The presence of our cleaners have allowed the church
doors to open during the COVID pandemic. Without these volunteers church services could not recommence. Cleaning
requirements per month are also needed in the Parish Centre especially as the doors are now open for the old Rectory
to be used for Parish activities. Thank you Churchwardens 5493 3823

BRIBIE ISLAND “WASH-OVER”: Pumicestone Passage is a double ended Barrier Estuary between Bribie Island
in the East and the Mainland. The narrow neck of Bribie has always been subject to potential tidal breach and
in geological terms the island is ephemeral, or short lived so it is expected that the spit will vanish at some
time.

Pumicestone Passage was created about 6-7000 years ago as sea level rose from the last Ice Age. The Island
was formed during the transfer of sand from south to north with the changed current direction. During this
formation it is possible that an opening had existed in a number of locations along the island. Some of these
positions are probably indicated by the location of islands in the Passage which may have generated at the
outlet to the ocean or simply at the head of a creek.

The Caloundra Bar was discovered by John Bingle in 1822 and proved the Passage was open to the ocean
and was indeed a Passage, not a river as named by Matthew Flinders. In recent history during European occu-
pation and local knowledge, the opening, or Bar from the Passage, has been situated at the north end with a
wider opening from Deception Bay in the south creating dynamics that result in a slow northerly movement
of water from south to north. The Bar position has been known to move south from its’ current position and
then relocate back to the north. This being a natural process has created no problems with the dynamics of
the Passage. Aerial photos would indicate that the last time the bar was considerably south of its’ current po-
sition was in the 1960’s.

Does the current potential breakthrough of the Island therefore pose a risk? There are a number of potential
outcomes, some of limited concern, however, overtime a trend of increased and rapid erosion could develop
resulting in the loss of the Island Spit. If no-one lived here and no manmade changes had been introduced to
the Passage, infrastructure did not exist and we had not become dependent on the character of the area, or
the tourist asset it has become, the loss of the island would not matter. Now, however, all of the above are
factors that need consideration when assessing the ultimate consequences of a breach that may rapidly lead
to a wide opening, even the possibility of change to the flow dynamics of the Passage. A wide Bar could neu-
tralise the northerly flow, silt the central area and ultimately create two separate estuaries. It could simply
create higher tidal levels for the Golden Beach and Diamond Head regions or rougher water where we cur-
rently enjoy smooth water recreation. It is a barrier against rough seas and storm surges and adds to the visu-
al character of the Passage defining the top end as a barrier estuary. It will impact estuarine ecosystems that
have developed behind the top end of Bribie Island with changes to marine and terrestrial vegetation that
has developed over recent years.

There are some basic things that could be tried to prevent ongoing loss of the spit. These should be consid-
ered under the policy of “do no harm” so that if failure occurs, no serious changes to the natural process
would occur. The Island is currently subject to “wash-over” in a number of places but the major location is
likely to become a “breakthrough” if current high tides persist or if a following storm season creates exces-
sive tides, winds and storm surge.

Due to all the man-made structures in and along the mainland shoreline, the character of the Passage can no
longer be considered natural in the purest terms. As such, a little human assistance to nature on the island
may help preserve the dynamics and the ambience for a longer period. It is now or never.
