COMING OUT OF THE DARK - Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society
CHHS is oftentimes referred to as “The Next-Best Thing to a Forever Home”. While they are in our care, dogs romp and
run in acres of outdoor play yards, and puppies play in the Bev & John Monaco Puppy Pavilion. Cats relax and roam
in cageless rooms and sunlit porches in the new CHHS Feline Adoption & Animal Care Center, and feline youngsters
scamper in the Sieglinde & Jack Gillfillan Kitten Nursery.
As a no-kill shelter, we never give up on the animals. Our shelter pets have all the time they need in “The Next-Best Thing”
until we can find for them “The Best Thing” – a forever home with loving human companions. Here are just a few of the
many CHHS residents who have found a forever home so far in 2021.

89 in a Row! Beginning in early 2014, CHHS started a remarkable streak for the animals.
We have now found 20 or more forever homes every single month for 89 consecutive
months! And adopters during that streak have traveled from 23 different states to
come meet their new best friend at our shelter. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all
the CHHS Adopting Angels for opening their hearts and homes for the unconditional
love of a CHHS shelter pet!

Critter Camp is Back!
After having to suspend our humane

year due to COVID -19, we were thrilled
to bring the program back beginning
in June 2021. All three weeks of the

campers are learning important skills
about responsible pet ownership, dog
bite prevention, and the importance
of spay/neuter, arming them with
the tools they need to be our animal
welfare ambassadors of tomorrow.

COMING OUT OF THE DARK - Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society
South Carolina Hoarding Rescue
For the second time in 14 months, the Cashiers-Highlands
Humane Society sent a team across the state line to South
Carolina to assist in a large-scale rescue. In January 2020, it was
to help save dogs in a massive, horrific puppy mill operation.
Most recently, the CHHS Animal Rescue Team was deployed
in March 2021 to help take in dogs from a heartbreaking
hoarding case.

More than 50 Chihuahua mixes were found roaming outside
and inside a mobile home in Belton, South Carolina after
a medical welfare check was requested on behalf of the
elderly owner of the property. While the condition of the
animals was not as dire as CHHS has dealt with in previous
rescues, local animal control officers on the scene
described the housing situation as deplorable. There
were multiple holes in the floor throughout the home
where sewage was seeping, and the floor itself was so
weak that rescuers had to walk on the exposed support
beams in the floor just to keep from falling through. Rats
were also prevalent throughout the home.

The Chihuahuas were taken to Anderson County PAWS where they were met
by representatives of CHHS. The CHHS Animal Rescue Team brought back 17
of the Chihuahuas to its no-kill shelter as well as 10 mixed-breed puppies from
the government-run shelter in Anderson. The 27 dogs ranged in age from 5 Please consider a
