The John E. Whitmore
Endowed Lectureship
Mrs. Clara Whitmore established the John E. Endowed Lectureship in 1987
as a perpetual tribute to the lifetime accomplishments of her late husband, John E. Whitmore;
his service as a Trustee of Baylor College of Medicine; and his interest in medical education,
research and healthcare. Mrs. Whitmore further enhanced the endowment in 1993.
The College lost a dear friend with her death in 2010.
vErin K. O’Shea, Ph.D.
Dr. Erin K. O’Shea is the sixth president of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the first woman to lead
the institute. She also is the Paul C. Mangelsdorf Professor of Molecular and Cellular Biology and a professor of
chemistry and chemical biology at Harvard University. O’Shea was named an HHMI investigator in 2000, and
she previously served as vice president and chief scientific officer of the institute before being named president
in 2016.
Under her leadership, the institute has established key priorities for its work in discovery science and science
education, and O’Shea is responsible for new efforts at HHMI to increase diversity in science and improve the
academic ecosystem. She also has overseen strategic changes to the institute’s core programs to ensure it maintains
its impact over time.
O’Shea is a leader in the fields of gene regulation, signal transduction and systems biology, and she maintains a
lab at HHMI’s Janelia Research Campus. Prior to joining HHMI leadership, she was the director of Harvard’s
Center for Systems Biology and served on the faculties of Harvard and the University of California, San Francisco.
She completed her undergraduate training at Smith College and her doctorate at the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology. She is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences
and the American Academy of Microbiology. She serves on the boards of the Albert and Mary Lasker Foundation
and Rescuing Biomedical Research and on the scientific advisory board of the Francis Crick Institute.
Marla M. Guerra, Ed.D.
For 17 years, Marla Guerra served as the superintendent of the South Texas Independent School District, where
Baylor College of Medicine has six partner high schools. Guerra was instrumental in the expansion and success
of these schools.
Under her leadership, the district had a rise in student success, with performance in state accountability
consistently surpassing set targets and levels of others across the state and campuses consistently ranking among
the best in the state and nation. At the time of her retirement, the district ranked first in the state and sixth in
the nation in the Niche 2018 Best K-12 School Districts rankings.
Guerra has driven the expansion of academic offerings and opportunities for hands-on learning and networking
through partnerships with local businesses and organizations as well as institutions of higher learning.
She started her career as a social worker and held numerous positions as she pursued her 40-year career in
education, including teacher, principal, assistant superintendent, superintendent and college professor.
Guerra worked with Baylor to expand its network of high schools and middle schools with programs aimed
at students interested in careers in medicine, science and the health professions. Baylor’s network of schools in
South Texas includes four high schools and two middle schools.
viLiz Scott
Liz Scott is the co-executive director of Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, which was created in January 2005
following the death of her daughter, Alex, of cancer at the age of 8.
At the age of 4, three years after being diagnosed with neuroblastoma, Alex told her parents that she wanted
to raise money to cure cancer in children through lemonade stands. At the time of her death, more than $1
million had been raised through lemonade stands run by children nationwide.
Since the first lemonade stand in 2000, the foundation has raised more than $150 million to fund research and
programs to help families struggling with childhood cancer, such as the Travel for Care program and SuperSibs.
The foundation has funded nearly 1,000 grants for pediatric cancer research at 135 institutions, including
Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Hospital. Currently, Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation funds
12 grants at Baylor College of Medicine totaling more than $2.5 million.
The organization’s key events include Lemonade Days, where supporters across the country host lemonade
stands in their neighborhoods every June, as well as Alex’s Million Mile, the largest childhood cancer awareness
challenge that funds researchers so they can find better treatments and more cures for kids battling cancer.
Participants of all ages log as many active miles as possible during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month with
the goal of collectively moving 1 million miles during the month.
viiThe Roy and Lillie Cullen Building
The Baylor University College of Medicine moved to Houston in 1943 from
Dallas to launch the proposed Texas Medical Center. The building to house
Baylor's medical school was named after Hugh Roy and Lillie Cullen who moved
to Houston in 1911 and made their fortune in oil. The Cullen Foundation's first
check was written in 1947 to fund the new medical building. Architects Hedrick
and Lindsley designed the building with modern deco elements and Texas cream
limestone. A portico was added in 1982 to enhance the main entrance. The Cullen
building remains at the heart of the Texas Medical Center.
