                                                                            and community fundraiser extraordi-

On a glorious mid-Summer day, 21 June, we had a wonderful sod-turning ceremony to mark the start of building
of the Wicklow Hospice. We were delighted to welcome the public, who have been so supportive, to the site to
be part of the celebration.
Mr Sean Dorgan, Chairman of the Wicklow Hospice Foundation, paid tribute to the people of Wicklow for their
incredible generosity, which will bring the Wicklow Hospice facility to fruition by the end of 2019. He said "It is
incredible that the community independently raised a phenomenal €4 million, without which the project would
never have come so far".
The support of Minister Simon Harris, leading to a further €1.25 million from the HSE, and other donor commit-
ments, enable the charity to secure a bank loan for the balance needed. On completion the full cost will exceed
€9 million (including all professional fees and taxes). For this reason, we continue to need the help of all our
great fundraisers and supporters.
Simon Harris paid tribute to the Columban Sisters for their generosity in donating the site, and the army of volun-
teers for their time and energy in raising funds. Elliott Construction are now well under way with the building
work. When the Hospice opens, services will be provided by Our Lady’s Hospice and Care Services, so we will be
one of ‘the three sisters’ - Harold’s Cross, Blackrock and Wicklow.

We had a wonderful attendance of many friends and supporters for the sod-turning, including:
 Patrons Sir Daniel Day Lewis, Shane Byrne , Fionnuala McCormack and Valerie Cox.
 Minister Simon Harris, Local TDs John Brady, Pat Casey and Stephen Donnelly, and Council-
lors led by Cathaoirleach Pat Vance.
 Cancer Support Groups from around the county.
 Founding members of the Foundation Evanne Cahill, Brendan Cuddihy, Marie Kindlon and
Miriam McGrath; (Eugene Murray, who was abroad, sent his best wishes).

We were delighted that one of our Patrons Sir

                                                            low Hospice events.

The wonderful Columban Sisters who donated the
site to the Wicklow Hospice. Without this wonder-
ful gift of such a peaceful and idyllic site the dream
of a Hospice for the people of Co Wicklow would
still be, just that a dream. Thanks to the wonderful
Columban Sisters that dream is to become a reali-
ty. With Magheramore beach or known more lo-
cally as ‘Nuns Beach’ just across the road family
members and perhaps patients can enjoy the se-
renity and peacefulness that comes with being by
the ocean.
