                A Different Year of Holidays
Activities to Enjoy in Your Bubble
This year, we have had to change many things about how we live and
work, each of us facing our own unique challenges. Although we can't all
gather this season, here are some ideas for family bonding time while
spending the holidays in our smaller bubbles:
Make Gingerbread Houses - these can be homemade or you can buy
   the pre-made boxes.
Holiday Lights Tour - go for a walk or drive to see the magical lights
   in your area.
Build a Pinecone Bird Feeder - cover a pinecone with peanut butter
and roll it in bird seeds, then hang from trees outside with a ribbon.
Decorate Doors with Wrapping Paper - children will love adding bows
and ribbons to the festive doors.
Holiday Pajama Movie Night - grab some treats and get cozy.
Make Paper Chains - see if you can decorate every room, hang them
from the ceiling or along the walls.
Build a Snowman - if there is a lot of snow, make a fort, snow angels,
   and a snowman family.
Make Paper Snowflakes - each one will be unique and can be hung
from the ceiling or on your tree.
Hiking or Sledding - spend some time exploring the nature in your
area, make sure to bundle up.
Explore Holidays Around the World - included in this bulletin is
information, activities, and recipes for several different holidays in
   December.

              Hanukkah December 10-18
                        Learning About Hanukkah
Hebrew for “dedication” and is often called the Festival of Lights.
It commemorates the rededicating of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem,
restoration of the menorah, and the miracle of Hanukkah.
The miracle of Hanukkah: only one vial of oil was found with just enough oil
to illuminate the Temple lamp for one day, but it lasted for eight full days.
Hanukkah is celebrated with lighting a candle on the menorah each night,
playing dreidel, and eating foods unique to Hanukkah (latkes, or potato
  pancakes, and jelly doughnuts).

               Winter Solstice December 21
                     Learning About Winter Solstice
The shortest day and longest night of the year in the northern hemisphere.
It has been celebrated by many cultures around the world as the return of
light and renewal of life as the days begin to get longer after the winter
  solstice.
Many of the rituals and traditions involve celebrating nature and setting
  intentions for the coming season.
A popular tradition is to build a yule altar which honours the return of the sun
represented by a large golden or yellow candle.

               Pancha Ganapati December 21-25
                        Learning About Pancha Ganapati
A modern Hindu festival that lasts five days honouring Lord Ganesha, the
patron of Arts and Guardian of Culture, and celebrating family.
During the festival, families work to mend past mistakes and bring blessings
of joy and harmony into five realms of their lives, a wider circle each day:
family, friends, associates, culture, and religion.
Celebrating includes outings, picnics, feasts, and exchanging cards and gifts.
Each day has its own significance and corresponding colour that is used to
   decorate.
The colour order is yellow, blue, red, green, and orange. Each day the family
establishes joy and harmony in the five realms of life.

              Christmas Day December 25
                        Learning About Christmas
A holiday that is both celebrated in Christianity as the celebration of the birth
of Jesus Christ, as well as by non-religious individuals who celebrate the
positive spirit of love and giving.
Traditional Christmas stemmed from many ancient traditions and
celebrations around the winter solstice and the changing seasons.
Popular customs include exchanging gifts, decorating Christmas trees, sharing
meals with family and friends, and waiting for Santa Claus to arrive.

              Kwanzaa December 26-January 1
                         Learning About Kwanzaa
Derived from a Swahili phrase meaning “first fruits of the harvest” as the
traditions come from year-end harvest celebrations.
A seven-day cultural holiday with an inherent spiritual quality, meant to
celebrate African-American culture, but is encouraged to be celebrated by all
   cultures and faiths.
Kwanzaa is celebrated differently by families but often includes singing,
dancing, African drums, storytelling, poetry reading, and a large traditional
   meal.
Each evening of Kwanzaa, families light one of the seven candles in a kinara
and talk about one of the seven principals: unity, self-determination, collective
work and responsibly, cooperative economics, creativity, and faith.
On December 31st a feast called Karamu is held.
                                                                 Information Found:

                       ECE BC Bursary Information
The Early Childhood Educators of British Columbia and the B.C. Ministry of Children and Family
Development are delighted to announce that the Education Support Fund will soon be
accepting applications once again for bursary funding.

Eligible applicants can continue to apply for one of two streams:

Student Bursary: up to $500 per course, to a maximum of 8 courses, for a total of $4,000
per semester to assist with tuition and living expenses while studying.
Workforce Development Bursary: up to $5,000 per semester to assist with tuition and
other expenses such as loss of wages or travel. This funding will support ECEs, ECE
Assistants, Responsible Adults (as defined in the Child Care Licensing Regulation) and
StrongStart BC Facilitators who are currently working in the ECE field and would like to
upgrade their credentials. Students can learn more about the eligibility criteria and apply
    here.

The amount of bursary funding available per semester will be limited in order to ensure that
funding is available for the full academic year. As a result, not all students who apply will receive
funding. Bursaries for the 2020/21 academic year will prioritize the following students:

     Students who self-identify as Indigenous
Students completing their final requirements for certification and/or upgrading their
credentials to include their Infant Toddler and/or Special Needs Educator qualifications.

Additional applications will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis. Funding will be
provided as a one-time payment once transcripts are submitted and approved at the end of
the semester. Please note that the Education Support Fund is not available to international
students.

Bursary applications for the Fall 2020 semester will be open from December 9, 2020 at
7:00 a.m. to December 24, 2020 at 4:00 p.m. Applications will not be accepted before
or after the submission period.

Please note the Province will also be offering bursaries for the Winter 2021 and Summer 2021
semesters, with applications opening in the new year.

If you have questions or require additional information, please contact the ECEBC
team at bursary@ecebc.ca or visit https://www.ecebc.ca/.
