Overview of Ayurveda
Ayurvedic Medicine is the most ancient system of medicine known to mankind. It emerged within
the Vedic culture that arose in the foothills of the Himalayas, and along the banks of the great
rivers of India. It is based on Vedic wisdom expounded by the ancient sages. Ayurveda is a science-
based healthcare approach that treats illness and promotes wellness by focussing assessment on
biochemically unique aspects of each patient, and then individually tailoring interventions to restore
psychological, physiological and structural imbalances.

There has been a worldwide surge of interest in Ayurvedic medicine as people seek health and
wellbeing. Ayurvedic medicine not only recognises the uniqueness of the individual but also the
oneness of all creation and how this translates into human health on all levels.

The basic principles upon which Ayurvedic medicine/healthcare operates are:
      • Biochemical individuality based on genetic and environmental uniqueness.
      • Dynamic balance of internal and external factors.
      • Web-like interconnections of psycho-physio-social processes.
      • Health as a positive vitality – not merely the absence of disease.
      • Promotion of organ reserve through psycho-neuro-immunological processes.
      • Patient-centred rather than disease focused healthcare.

Using these principles, Ayurvedic healthcare practitioners focus on understanding the fundamental
physiological processes, the environmental and social inputs, and the genetic predisposition that
influences every person’s experience of health and disease. A person is considered an integral part of
the Universe which is governed by natural laws.

British Institute of Marmapuncture
Marmapuncture is traditionally known as Bhedan karma (meaning the action of piercing through) is a time tested
therapeutic intervention, which treats the energetic body through an elaborate network of channels known as srotas.

Despite the widely held belief that Marmapuncture is a derivative of Chinese Acupuncture, that was popularised
in 200-400 BC in text of the Yellow Emperor) modern archaeological evidence points to the fact that Suchi Bhaden,
Shira Bhedan and Bhadhan Karma where practised in Sri Lanka well before this time. Finds discovered in caves in the
Balangoda region of Sri Lanka, suggest there has been continuous habitation for over 37,000 years. Micro lithic tools
were crafted from flint, fish bones and a type of rock known as Chert. These where used to penetrate the skin, which
affected a therapeutic response in the body.

The British Institute of Marmapuncture offers our College of Ayurveda and Yoga Therapy students a 50% discount on
their diploma and more information can be found on their website

FAQ
Can I pay for the course in instalments?
Yes, you can pay for the course in up to 10 monthly instalments.

Could I be eligible for a student loan or any bursaries to help with the course fees?
Unfortunately, as a private college, we are not eligible to receive Government-funded student loans or bursaries.

Could I take the course part-time?
We offer students the opportunity to take the first three years of the DipHE on a part time basis. This would mean taking two
modules each year. This is a convenient way to space your learning and fit your passion around the life you already lead. This
is not available for the students taking the MSc.

Do I have to do all four years, or can I choose the level I study up to?
By including an exit qualification at the end of each successfully completed year of study, students are able to study to the
level that they want to. The years have to be taken in order but you can decide to take a break or finish your study with us at
the end of each year and still leave with a useful and respected qualification.
FAQ
I already have some Ayurvedic training, can I skip a year?
Our course is integrated and therefore, for most students, we would require you to take all years to ensure that your
knowledge is fully comprehensive. However, if you provide transcripts of your previous courses, you may be able to be
credited for some modules.

Where are my qualifications recognised?
Your qualifications are accepted in any country that accepts Ayurveda as a form of therapy. This includes the UK, Europe and
some US states. In order to practice in India and Sri Lanka, you will need a Bachelor’s in Ayurvedic Medical Studies, which can
only be delivered by Government-approved universities in the respective countries.
