1.1.NGT upholds rights of pastoralists in Banni grasslands
• The National Green Tribunal (NGT) ordered all encroachments to be removed from Gujarat's Banni
grasslands within six months
• The region's nomadic pastoralist community, the Maldharis, whose livelihoods are depend on this
protected shrub-savanna,
welcomed the move.
• The court also said the
Maldharis will continue to
hold the right to conserve the
community forests in the
area, granted to them as per
the provisions in Section 3 of
Forest Rights Act, 2006

1.2.National Mission on use of Biomass in coal based thermal
power plants
• Ministry of Power has decided to set up a National Mission on use of Biomass in coal based thermal
power plants
Objectives
• To increase the level of co-ring from present 5% to higher levels to have a larger share of carbon
neutral power generation from the thermal power plants.
• To take up R&D activity in boiler design to handle the higher amount of silica, alkalis in the biomass
pellets.
• To facilitate overcoming the constraints in supply chain of bio mass pellets and agro- residue and its
transport upto to the power plants.
• To consider regulatory issues in biomass co- ring
Proposed structure
• Steering Committee headed by Secretary (Power) comprising of all stakeholders including
representatives from Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas (MoPNG), Ministry of New & Renewable
Energy (MNRE) etc
• The Executive Committee would be headed by Member (Thermal), CEA
• The duration of proposed National Mission would be a minimum 5 years
• The proposed National Mission on biomass will also contribute in the National Clean Air Programme
(NCAP).
• Sub groups
• Sub-Group 1 : to be responsible to carry
out research on properties of
• biomass.
• Sub-Group 2 : to carry out technical
speci cation and safety aspects
including research in boiler design etc.
• Sub-Group 3: for resolving the issues of
supply chain during the mission period
and sensitization programme.
• Sub-Group 4 : to select designated labs
and certi cation bodies for testing of
Agro-based biomass pellets and
Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) pellets
• Sub-Group 5: be formed on regulatory framework and economics of biomass co- ring in coal based
Thermal power plants.

2.2.Yuan Longping
• The Chinese scientist Yuan Longping, whose
development of hybrid rice in the 1970s helped
bring an end to famine for millions of people
throughout Asia and Africa, died recently

• In 1970s, he developed “the rst hybrid rice
combination called Nan-you No. 2 which, due to
heterosis
• It typically yielded 20 percent more rice than
conventional varieties, transforming Chinese
agriculture after years of famine and scarcity.
• Some 10,000 years after Chinese farmers began
cultivating rice near the Yangtze River, the country now produces more than 200 million tons of rice a
year, more than any other nation.
• He ultimately partnered with the United Nations and the
International Rice Research Institute in the Philippines, in
addition to teaching farmers in India, Vietnam and elsewhere
how to grow hybrid rice.
• In 2004, he was awarded the World Food Prize
Heterosis

3.2.Permanent commission on human rights violations in
Israel,Palestine
• Member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation are calling on the U.N. Human Rights
Council to set up a permanent commission to report on human rights violations in Israel, Gaza and

• Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt recently said he has received a golden visa for the UAE.
Golden visa system
• The Golden Visa system essentially offers long-term residency (5 and 10 years) to people belonging
to groups like investors, entrepreneurs, individuals with outstanding talents the likes of researchers,
medical professionals and those within the scienti c and knowledge elds, and remarkable students.
• The main bene t of the visa will be security as through the issuance of the Golden Visa,
Who are eligible to apply?
• For the 10-year visa, investors having no less than AED 10 million worth of public investment, either
in the form of an investment fund or a company, can apply.
• However, at least 60 per cent of the total investment must not be in the form of real estate and the
invested amount must not be loaned, or in case of assets, investors must assume full ownership.
• This 10-year long visa may be extended to include business partners, providing that each partner
contributes AED 10 million.
• The long-term visa can also include the holder’s spouse and children, as well as one executive
director and one advisor
• Besides entrepreneurs, individuals with specialised talent can also apply for the visa. They include
doctors, researchers, scientists, investors and artists.
• Exceptional high school and university students are eligible for a 5-year residency visa in the UAE.
• High school students who rank top in the country (a minimum grade of 95 per cent) and students
from certain universities
Doctors and specialists must meet at least two of the following conditions
• PhD degree from one of the top 500 universities in the world An award or certi cates of
appreciation in the eld of the applicant’s work Contribution to a major scienti c research in the
respective eld of work
• Published articles or scienti c books in distinguished publications in the respective eld of work
