DONCASTER COUNCIL APPRENTICESHIPS PROSPECTUS 2018
Mayor Ros Jones
“Often that first step on the career ladder is the most difficult. At Doncaster Council, we are passionate about
creating a wide variety of apprenticeship opportunities to support young people as they venture out into the
world of work. Every new apprenticeship created is another opportunity for a local person to learn valuable skills,
gain workplace experience and the confidence to embrace new challenges.

Many apprentices that come into the council go on to have rewarding careers with us. I’d encourage you to
consider these opportunities - they may pave the way to future job prospects.”

Cllr Nuala Fennelly, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Schools
“We are very proud of our apprentices at Doncaster Council – I never fail to be impressed with their spirit,
enthusiasm and determination to succeed. The council’s well established apprenticeship programme continues
to go from strength to strength supported by a commitment to give our apprentices opportunities to maximise
    their potential and shine.

To any young person unsure whether an apprenticeship is right for them, I’d say ‘go for it’ – it’s a great way to
get your career off to a flying start!”

    Apprenticeship Network

the same aspirations and work ethic. Starting an apprenticeship is a very big step especially for young people

apprenticeship with Doncaster Council is that they
make sure that you get the best possible training

     • Encourage apprentices to meet and work with Damian Allen -

       support to each other.

We are wanting to be able to have a Network
that is primarily there for support and making
connections in the working environment whilst
also having the opportunity to become involved in
activities and events that can boost our future
     employability.

As part of establishing and promoting the
Apprentice Network, all involved worked to organise
a Christmas Charity event with proceeds being
split between Alzheimer’s UK (Doncaster) and the
Children’s Ward at Doncaster Royal Infirmary.
With the main event being held on Monday 11th
December last year we arranged a bake sale, quiz
and raffle. Overall we totalled to just shy of £1,400.

Megan from the Apprenticeship Network said:
“I think the best thing about having an apprenticeship with Doncaster
Council is having the chance to earn while you learn as well as having
so many further opportunities like work experience and work
shadowing in other teams to be able to get a feel for what is also on
offer throughout Doncaster.

You are able to share your thoughts and ideas in tasks that you may be
involved in. I have been able to use my knowledge to enhance projects
in my team and the outcome is always very rewarding.

Doing an apprenticeship gives you the chance to explore what you are
interested in and the path you want to follow in the future.

I decided to do an apprenticeship because I had no desire to go to
Uni but wanted to enhance my learning. I also wasn’t sure what career
path I wanted to take so undertaking a Business Admin Apprenticeship
gave me a good starting point. I have benefitted from this as I have
gained many skills and improved the skills I already have, I also have
the best experience of working life and what it is really like to work in an
office based environment.

I hope to gain a full time job within the council, doing something
similar to my apprenticeship as I would like to experience a different level
of what I already do. I would also have aspirations to work in either IT or a
creative team as they are subjects that I am very interested in.”

“I wanted to do an apprenticeship in Highways
because for me it is more hands on. I learn a
lot quicker by doing, rather than just sitting in a
classroom. I also get paid whilst learning which
helped me buy and run a car; this then allowed me
to go onto the Winter Gritting I think for some people
who like doing practical things it is a better option
than sixth form or full time college. The council is also
willing to train you to a high standard and you get a lot
of support whilst training.

My hopes for the future are I would like to keep
learning new skills and improve the ones I have.
Someday I hope to pass my Light Goods Vehicle
licence, become a Charge Hand and one day
become a Highways Supervisor.”

working in a commercial butchers. The money was
OK, but after a while I knew it was not what I wanted
to do forever - so I decided to look for something
with better development and training opportunities.
I applied for a Level 2 apprenticeship in Business

Council. I went for the interview and was successful.

And I’ve never looked back!

I started working in the Economic Development
Department at Doncaster Council almost 20 years

the Major Projects Team. Their job seemed very
interesting, so I asked if I could work closer with them
and do their admin. Over time, I learned more about
what they did, and they gave me more opportunities
to work with them on the construction projects side of
things. They were really supportive in developing
my skills.

Work Experience
     What is work experience?
Nothing beats real world experience, whether fresh
out of school, college or university or looking to
change career, work experience can provide the
practical experience to accompany your theoretical
     knowledge.

Work experience is an opportunity for people to try
out and gain exposure to real-life jobs in a work
environment. These kinds of placements can provide
insight and understanding of the world of work and
develop a range of skills and knowledge that will be
     valuable in the future.

Work experience placements can also benefit those
who, for whatever reason may have experienced
barriers to entering the workplace, or those wanting to
return to work after a period of unemployment.

At Doncaster Council we are proud to have been
awarded a Gold accolade by quality standard
organisation Fair Train for our work experience
