2018-2019 Foundation Chair
Dear Foundation Donors, Recipients, Volunteers and Friends,
As the 2018 -2019 Chair of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation, I’m proud to present our 2019 Donor Report.
As you make your way through this report, you will read all the ways our Foundation makes an impact on our fellow
Academy members, the profession and the health of the general public. You will also be able to hear from Foundation
Scholarship, Award, Grant and Fellowship recipients through some of our latest videos that show all the ways your donation
made a difference in their lives and how they are making a difference throughout the profession through your support.
Our Donor Report recognizes our donors and celebrates the Foundation’s accomplishments. Our Foundation is the only
charitable organization dedicated exclusively to our profession, supporting nutrition and dietetics. Although affiliated with
the Academy, the Foundation is an independent 501(c)(3) public charity and does not receive any portion of member dues.
The success and impact of our programs and services are directly attributed to the generous support of our donors.
Your support is helping our Foundation to fulfill our Mission, to empower current and future food and nutrition practitioners
to optimize global health, through our programs. The dynamic individuals who are serving in fellowships, have received a
scholarship, or have been granted support through our disaster relief efforts are truly inspiring, and made my job extremely
rewarding in my last year as Chair of this dynamic organization. On behalf of the thousands of students, nutrition & dietetics
practitioners, and children who benefit from the Academy Foundation’s initiatives, thank you for your generosity and helping
make our 2018-19 year a huge success. We can all be proud of OUR Academy Foundation!

Scholarships
Our Foundation invests in the current and future generation
of food and nutrition practitioners as the world’s largest
provider of dietetic scholarships at all levels of study.
Last year, our Foundation provided more than $563,000 to
518 deserving Academy members and students at all levels
of study.
Awards and Research
Through our Awards and Research programs, Academy CLICK TO PLAY
members have a chance to make a difference and advance Megan Farris & Lisa Piazza, MS, RDN, LDN express their thanks for
the dietetics profession. Academy Foundation research Foundation scholarships.
grants elevate the registered dietitian nutritionist’s profile to
the public by continuing to position the Academy and its
members as the nutrition experts. Our Foundation provides
dietetics awards and grants to our members that encourage
them to grow as professionals and achieve excellence in
new and developing areas of food and nutrition. Last year,
our Foundation provided more than $112,418 in Awards to
93 Academy members and $160,500 in research grants to
fund 16 Academy members and their work.

Our Foundation is excited to be collaborating with the CLICK TO PLAY

Abbott Hess Award winner Lauren Haska MS, RDN, share their stories.

for current and future credentialed food and nutrition
practitioners at all career levels that advance each
fellow’s skills, knowledge, and visibility, hone the fellow’s
expertise, and advance the Foundation’s and Academy’s
strategic plans.
Public Education Programs—
Kids Eat Right and Future of Food
Our Public Education Programs bring the expertise of
RDN’s and Academy members into schools and throughout
CLICK TO PLAY
communities, creating awareness and delivering education
and resources today that will create a better future for all. Marie Spiker, MSPH, RDN, and Courtney Bliss, MS, RDN, CNSC, share
their fellowship work.
Our Kids Eat Right program is committed to promoting
a healthy today and tomorrow for our children while our

Future of Food program works to raise awareness of food
insecurity and promote access to healthy food and quality
nutrition education in food banks.
Disaster Relief Efforts
The Academy Foundation Disaster Relief Fund was
established to support the personal and professional life-
rebuilding efforts of Academy members and other nutrition
and dietetics professionals and students who have been
affected by disasters. Over the last few years, $122,425 CLICK TO PLAY
has been provided to help 87 nutrition and dietetics
Foundation disaster relief recipients, Kalyn Cryer, MS, RDN, LDN, CDE
practitioners and students during their time of need. and Martin Hugo Roman share their stories.
Second Century Member Campaign
In honor of its 100-year anniversary in 2016, the Academy
and Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation
underwent a comprehensive and intensive strategic
planning process to chart a new vision for the future,
grounded in an extraordinary commitment to collaboration,
a focus on service and an emphasis on accelerating the
progress towards solving the greatest food and nutrition
challenges of the 21st century. The process engaged both
internal and external stakeholders, to identify issues, set
priorities and develop plans of action to help shape the
future direction. At the completion of this process the
Academy and Foundation set a new shared Vision and
kicked off the Second Century Member Campaign to
raise funds that will address the challenges and priorities
identified in the Second Century process.
Shared Vision: A world where all people thrive through
the transformative power of food and nutrition.
The Academy and Foundation kicked-off its Second Century
Member Campaign at FNCE® of 2016, with an Academy
member of goal of $5M. Since then, Academy leaders,
members, affiliates, DPGs and MIGs have been stepping up
to support the campaign with significant gifts. Gifts to the
Second Century Member Campaign impacts in the future
of the profession and supports strategic priorities such as
sustainability, hunger and malnutrition. More info on these
