NOT THE IDBF NEWSLETTER ! by Mike MacKeddie-Haslam.
WELCOME to this Edition of Dragon Sport News, the E-magazine with news and
views on all aspects of Dragon Boating, from around the Dragon Boat World. But it
would seem that some folk have confused DSN with the IDBF Newsletter Dragon
                        Boat International (DBI).
So let me clarify things. DBI is the only official news sheet of the IDBF and whilst I was
the IDBF President, it fell to me to pick up the pieces and publish DBI when the IDBF
Marketing & Media Commission (M&MC) were unable to do so.
For some time Henning Werkhorst, as a member of the M&MC, published DBI alongside his own independent magazine Dragon Boat
World. When Henning was no longer able to do that, I continued to keep DBI going until Mike Thomas took over the reins as IDBF
 President in January 2016.
At this time Angie Ong, as Chair of the M&MC, agreed that she would undertake to continue publishing DBI and did so with her first
edition, published in time for the 2016 CCWC in Adelaide. At that time I had a lot of articles and information on the Sport on my PC,
so I decided to publish it independently as Dragon Sport News and of course sent it out as an emagzine to all my email contacts.
DSN was well received and many people wanted me to continue to publish it going forward. I have always believed in the Sport
having at least one independent magazine and over the years have encouraged people to have a go at it, so now that I am no longer
an elected member of the IDBF Council, I felt I should do the same and keep the ‘paddlers’ informed about all things Dragon Boating.
However, it would seem that some people did not read the small print at the bottom of this page and complained to Mike
Thomas about it, having confused DSN with DBI. To them I offer my apologies and hopefully this edition of DSN makes it very clear
that this magazine is not DBI and is not the official newsletter of the IDBF but an independently published emagazine on the Sport.
I will publish DSN on an irregular basis when I have enough news for it and the free time to do it ! So if you want to have your say
about anything to do with the Sport, including the IDBF, your own National Federation or even the ICF’s involvement in our Sport,
whether it is good, bad or indifferent, then let me know and DSN will publish it - subject always, to good language and taste !

NEWS FROM THE WORLD ANTI-DOPING AGENCY (WADA) - THE 2017 PROHIBITED LIST
What is the Prohibited List? It is an International Standard identifying Substances and Methods prohibited in-competition, out-of-
competition, and in particular sports. Within the list,
 Substances and methods are classified by categories (e.g., steroids, stimulants, gene doping).
 The use of any Prohibited Substance by an athlete for medical reasons is possible by virtue of a Therapeutic Use Exemption.
The Prohibited List (List) was first published in 1963 under the leadership of the International Olympic Committee. Since 2004, as
mandated by the World Anti-Doping Code (Code), WADA is responsible for the preparation and publication of the List. The List is a
cornerstone of the Code and a key component of harmonization
The WADA 2017 Prohibited List (Substances & Methods) was published on 29 Sept 2016 and copies can be downloaded as a PDF
from www.wada-ama.org For a summary of changes to the Prohibited List for 2017, see separate Sports Science page article.
The List, which is updated annually, came into force on 1st January 2017 and in order to give athletes and their entourages
sufficient time to familiarise with it, was published 3 months ahead of taking effect. The Sportaccord President has requested all
International Federations to make the 2017 List or a link to it, available on their websites and to inform athletes under their jurisdiction
about changes in the list and to make the list easily accessible for consultation, so check out the IDBF website at www.idbf.org.
For the benefit of DSN readers, a summary of the changes to the Prohibited List is shown elsewhere in this issue.
THE ALLIANCE OF INDEPENDENT RECOGNISED MEMBERS OF SPORT (AIMS)
The Alliance of Independent Recognised Members of Sport (AIMS) was found in 2011 by the 23 non-
IOC recognised members of SportAccord and is the fourth group in SportAccord alongside ARISF,
ASOIF and AIOWF. The IDBF is a Founder Member of AIMS and IDBF Hon President, Mike
MacKeddie-Haslam is an elected Member of the AIMS Executive Board.

IDBF and ICF IN TALKS TO INCLUDE ICF CREWS IN THE IDBF CLUB CREW WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Following an approach from the ICF President, at the Sportaccord Convention in April 2016, the IDBF and ICF have held talks to discuss
the possibility of dragon boat crews from ICF Canoe Clubs being invited to participate in future IDBF Club Crew World Champs.
Whilst the ICF Statutes restrict entries to ICF World events to crews from ICF Members only, the IDBF Statutes allow for any crew
practicing Dragon Boating to be able to take part in a Club Crew World Championships, so this is the ideal vehicle in which to start a co-
operation with the ICF.
However, any such collaboration would need to be agreed by the IDBF Members Congress, so whilst 2018 might be possible, 2020 is
probably a better target date. Previous attempts to include National Teams from ICF Members in the World Nations Champs failed
because like all Team Sports only one National Team, per Country can compete in a World Nations Champs, unlike the Club Crews
where multi-entries from clubs in a Country are permitted.

There were jubilant scenes in Dublin Airport last August

ragon Boat Club Organizer, Kitt Noythanongsay:
What makes a dragon boat club successful? For my club, we carry a family
spirit with us. Being friendly and welcoming to new people, being supportive to
each other makes us unique. People in our club are willing to step out of the
ordinary boundaries to help each other out, even outside of dragon boating.
For example, the son of one of our club members is seriously ill and we take the
time to visit. When our practices are over, the socializing keeps going to the point
where paddlers need to be asked to leave.
How do you attract new members? Word of mouth is important. We use Meetup
to get new paddlers twice each month. We have created a program
                                                        programme for new
people, kind of like a mentoring program.
For our group, we attend different local arts and cultural festivals and fairs, and
spread the word that way. At some of these
hese events, we have a booth to promote
ourselves, because the cultural nature of our clu

to your advantage? While other local clubs focus on “on

he sport continues to play a big role in all of our events where it is
affordable (the team in Tokyo and Okinawa have had difficulties due to high costs) but everywhere else is
having a terrific experience. In September 2016 we also managed to add a Europe Corporate Cup of
Dragon Boat Racing, also designed to celebrate the City Of Sport accolade secured by Stoke On Trent.
It was a fabulous event and the weather was perfect, see article that follows. The Lord Mayor and the Cabinet member for sport and
leisure were both in one of the boats and as you can see from the pictures it was a wonderful experience and great for Dragon Boat
Racing too. We are hoping to repeat the experience and to build the event further again next year.

Councillor Terry Follows, cabinet member for greener city, development and

to bring these events to our city. The Corporate Games last year were a huge
success and left people in no doubt not only of our ab ability to stage high-profile
events, but also the quality of sporting facilities we have to offer. This is another
example of how being the UK’s European City of Sport is raising our profile and
helping us to attract events like these, which might not have come here in the
past. The influx of visitors which these events will bring gives a welcome boost to
our local tourism sector”. Actions speak louder than words though, with Cllr

DDRA (OPS) CANADA DAY REGATTA Saturday July 1, 2017 on Toronto's Centre Island.
Part of the one of the world's longest running mixed regattas, involving canoe clubs and rowing clubs since 1884, with dragon boats
added in 2003. The event is run by the Dominion Day Regatta Association (DDRA), for which Tim MacFarlane is the Dragon Boat
Coordinator and general committee member since 2007. Ontario Public Service (OPS) employees have volunteered to coordinate the
dragon boat portion of this event since the start, hence the reference to being the unofficial OPS Canada Day Regatta (Tim woworks for the
OPS). There are many other OPS volunteers helping or organize this event. The event is limited to 18 teams due to the canoe, kayak, and
rowing races also on the race card. Any teams are welcome to register for this event, not just OPS teams. It is a small recreational
regatta located on scenic Toronto Islandsds on a very special day, Canada Day. Join us for this special event!

The primary goal of the International Breast Cancer Paddlers Commission (IBCPC) is to ensure that International Breast Cancer Survivors
(BCS) participation festivals and international competitive events are raising awareness about life after a diagnosis of and treatment for
breast cancer. The IBCPC is a Commission of the International Dragon Boat Federation (IDBF)
The IBCPC Steering Committee would like to up-date date you on the progress made to
IBCPC TRUST APPROVED establish a non-profit organisation registered under legalisation in British Columbia,

We have consulted experts in the field of governance, Benefic Group Inc. a Canadian law firm solely

Currently the Steering Committee operates according to the Commission’s Constitution and By-Laws.
Without being registered as a legal incorporated entity, the Commissionon is not able to enter into contracts
with incorporated bodies. Until we are incorporated we are not able to approach sponsors, which is a priority
for us now we have established a credible track record around the world.
The decision to incorporate in Canada, the country where the breast cancer dragon boat paddling movement
began, was based on several considerations. The following points will assist in understanding the reasoning
for a non-profit corporation in British Columbia.
                               1. Federal or provincia
provincial legislation. Will the entity be incorporated under federal or provincial legislation?
We have been advised the federal incorporation laws have different levels of financial reporting depending on
gross revenues and the sources of funding in a fiscal year which could incur audited financials and
excessive reporting requirements. Provincial reporting requirements are less onerous and less costly.
                               2. Budget. The IBCPC operates on a small budget and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. The
cost of a yearly audit under federal laws would likely bankrupt us within a couple of years even though we
do not have a great deal of money, currently less than $50,000 which is the approximate amount of our
operating funds until the festival in 2018.
At that time, we will collect a levy from each participant thus providing our funding for the following four years
as we have done from past festivals.
                               3. Charitable or non-profit considerations. Charitable status would permit us to issue tax receipts to our
sponsors and donors. However, charitable organisations can only disburse funds to other registered charities
in Canada, precluding us from providing funds to any non- charitable groups both in and out of Canada. With
non- profit status our funds can be used outside the charitable sector and anywhere in the world.
The new corporate entity, to be called the International Breast Cancer Paddlers’ Commission Trust, will have
a board of directors elected or appointed as is the case with the Commission currently.
The Founding Directors will be the four directors, Betty Solley, Carol Mutton, Jenny Yule and myself elected
by the Commission member teams at its last Congress, Sarasota, USA, 2014. Meri Gibson as Vice
President of the Commission appointed by the Steering Committee will be the fifth founding director.
These directors will have the ability to appoint four other directors as is the case with the Commission. The
Directors will be able to acquire Directors’ and Officers’ Liability Insurance, an important factor in our effort to
                               protect our organization.
The new entity’s purposes are built on IBCPC’s current purposes and this will enable IBCPC to continue
carrying on its activities in a way that permits it to act as the operational arm of the new entity. Members of
the IBCPC Steering Committee will form the Committee to operate under the new entity.
Iff you have questions or concerns please email committee@ibcpc.com.
We look forward to hearing from you.

                                                   BETA- BLOCKERS AND YOU !
                                                       ‘The Whys and Wherefores’
WHAT ARE THEY?
Beta-blockers refer to a group of prescription drugs that stop adrenaline from binding to nerve receptors, with the result that the
effects of the adrenaline are ‘blocked’. Blocking adrenaline allows the heart to beat with reduced force and at a slower pace. Beta-
blockers are prescribed by doctors to treat hypertension, heart arrhythmia, heart failure, angina, heart attack, hypothyroidism,
glaucoma, migraines, tremors and anxiety. Beta blockers include the following drugs:- Acebutolol, Sectral, Atenolol, Tenormin,
Bisoprolol, Zebeta, Metoprolol, Lopressor, Toprol Xl, Nadolol, Corgard, Nebivolol, Bystolic, Propranolol, Inderal La, Innopran Xl.
USES FOR BETA BLOCKERS
Doctors prescribe beta blockers to prevent, treat or improve symptoms in a variety of
conditions, such as:
     High blood pressure
     Irregular heart rhythm (arrhythmia)
     Heart failure
     Chest pain (angina)
     Heart attacks
     Migraine
     Certain types of tremors
Beta blockers are usually prescribed to lower blood pressure after other medications, such as diuretics, have proved to be ineffective.
A doctor may prescribe beta blockers as one of several blood pressure lowering medications, including angiotens in-converting
enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, diuretics or calcium channel blockers. It is known that Beta blockers may not work as effectively for black
and older people, especially when taken without other blood pressure medications.
DO THEY AFFECT YOUR ABILITY TO EXERCISE?
Athletes have used beta blockers for many years in different sports. They are mainly used in sports
where both a reduction of muscle spasms and anxiety are considered as a key to success. The increase
in blood flow gained from beta blockers decreases involuntary muscle spasms and research has shown
that beta blockers decrease anxiety too.
Gymnasts use beta blockers to reduce or eliminate muscle spasms and to help calm their nerves prior to
a big competition. The sport relies heavily on balance and stability which can be improved with beta
blocker supplementation. In archery and shooting, where steady arms and hands are important, beta
blockers are used to steady the shooters body and reduce anxiety which can result in improved accuracy.
Sports that do not rely on balance and the stability of certain muscle groups, can still use beta blockers to calm a
competitor’s nerves and reduce anxiety during competition, especially at university and international level events.
        SIDE EFFECTS AND CAUTIONS
Side effects may occur in some people taking beta blockers. Common side effects of beta blockers include:
 Fatigue; Cold hands or feet; Weight gain; Low Blood Pressure: Slow Heart Rate: Dizziness: Headaches:
Nausea: Muscle Cramps and Heart Failure.
Less common side effects include:
 Shortness of breath: Trouble sleeping and insomnia: Depression: Asthma and Impaired Circulation.
ARE BETA-BLOCKERS BANNED IN ALL SPORTS ?
The answer is No. Beta blockers fall under the P2 Section of the WADA Prohibited List, as a substance prohibited in particular sports.
Although they have no recognizable benefit in most sports, it is widely acknowledged that they are beneficial to sports such as
archery and shooting, as mentioned above, where Beta-blockers are prohibited both In and Out-of-Competition. Again, this is
because they lower the heart rate, minimize anxiety and reduce muscle tremors.
Beta-blockers are prohibited In-Competition only, in the following sports:-
 • Automobile (FIA) • Billiards (all disciplines) (WCBS) • Darts (WDF) • Golf (IGF) • Skiing/Snowboarding (FIS) in ski jumping,
freestyle aerials/halfpipe and snowboard halfpipe/big air • Underwater sports (CMAS) in constant-weight apnoea with or without fins,
dynamic apnoea with and without fins, free immersion apnoea, Jump Blue apnoea, spearfishing, static apnoea, target shooting, and
variable weight apnoea. The IDBF has yet to look at the question of Beta-blockers in respect to Dragon Boat Racing internationally.

MOTIVATION, SUNSHINE, HEALTH & EXERCISE – Have you got your life in balance !

The New Year is always a good time to look back and reflect on the trials and tribulations, successes and joys of the old year and the
demands that your life style has put on you. This is especially true of sports people who add the demands of their Sport to those of
their working life. It is important, therefore, to think and assess if your life has a healthy balance. So let us have a look at some of the

GOING NUTS ! – Healthy Nuts, just for you
Often, the simplest foods are best for your health. This is certainly the case for nuts, in which Mother Nature has produced nearly a
perfect package of protein, healthy fats, fiber, plant sterols, antioxidants, and many vitamins and minerals.
MACADAMIA NUTS have the highest fat and lowest protein and carb content of any nut. Raw macadamia
nuts also contain high amounts of vitamin B1, magnesium, and manganese.. Just one serving of
macadamia nuts net 58 percent of what you need in manganese, and 23 percent of the recommended daily
value of thiamin. Moreover, about 60 percent of the fatty acid in macadamia is the monounsaturated fat
oleic acid. This is about the level found in olives, which are well known for their health benefits.
PECAN NUTS contain more than 19 vitamins and minerals, and research has shown they may help lower LDL
cholest-erol and promote healthy arteries. They are a close second to macadamia nuts on the fat and protein scale,
and also contain anti-inflammatory magnesium, heart healthy oleic acid, phenolic antioxidants, and immune-boosting
   manganese.

WALNUTS. One-quarter cup of walnuts, seven shelled nuts (15g) a day, provides a very high percent of the
daily recommended value of plant-based Omega-3 but particularly Omega-6 fats, along with high amounts of
copper, manganese, molybdenum, and biotin. Walnuts could be an important step to health improvement and
may help reduce not only the risk of prostate cancer, but breast cancer as well
Walnuts contain the amino acid l-arginine, which offers multiple vascular benefits to people with heart disease, or those who have
increased risk for heart disease due to multiple cardiac risk factors
Walnuts also contain several unique and powerful antioxidants that are available in only a few commonly eaten foods. Walnuts help
with weight control, and offer support for brain health and type 2 diabetes. Try adding them to some yoghurt with honey as a snack.
ALMONDS. Like walnuts, one of the healthiest aspects of almonds appears to be their skins, as they are rich in
antioxidants including phenols, flavonoids, and phenolic acids, which are typically associated with vegetables and
fruits. A study in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry even revealed that a one-ounce serving
of almonds has a similar amount of total polyphenols as a cup of steamed broccoli or green tea.
A study in the journal Circulation found people with abnormally high level of lipids, such as cholesterol, in their blood were
able to significantly reduce their risk factors for coronary heart disease by snacking on whole almonds but do be careful
not to over-eat almonds, however, as they are high in protein – nearly one gram per almond.
BRAZIL NUTS. Brazil nuts offer many of the same benefits of other nuts – healthy fats, antioxidants, fiber,
vitamins, and minerals. However, they're most notable for being an excellent source of organic selenium, a
powerful antioxidant-boosting mineral that may be beneficial for the prevention of cancer. Just four Brazil Nuts
could provide 50 micrograms, the daily amount of selenium needed is 60-75. They also have a beneficial high
fat and low protein content, behind only macadamias and pecans. Try them with cheese and oatcakes.

rowers in protest against the growing presence of motor boats and the swell
damage they do to the historic city, took up oars and with a force of 500 boats
strong mapped a route of 30km around Venice.
The tradition has continued to gain popularity over the years with boat numbers
reaching up to 2000 – from kayaks, SUPs to the elegant stand up venetian

The Dublin Vikings paddled 6km for the opening ceremony, on day one. Along

presence with a proud war cry. Onlookers applauded and took in the sight of the
teams gathering and saluting to the Santa Maria della Salute.

Day 2: We joined Venice’s 3 International Dragon Boat Bo Regatta. Racing
against club teams from Australia, England, Dubai and the U.A.E. for 200m race challenges. The Vikings went on to win Gold in the
20-man
man mixed boat competition, while taking the bronze in the 10
                                                              10-man mixed boat races.

Day 3: The main event - let’s Vogalonga! The race involved a 35km paddle through narrow bustling canals and eventually onto open
waters around Venice. Every paddler took each stroke with a conditioned determination, there was no ‘easy’ called throughout, only
to avoid collision with another boat! (Watch

We shaved an hour from the previous Vogalonga which is testament to the training and growing
experience of the team,, when we are back at home on the Dublin Grand Canal. These competitive
accomplishments further cemented the bonds of the team. We rounded the weekend off with some
sightseeing and socialising, which allowed the team to ease their sore muscles!
                                                                           nd
Maeve Dunne, Chairperson of the Dublin Vikings said “This was the 2 Vogalonga for the Dublin Vikings. It
is an experience for both trainee and experienced helms and paddlers. Navigating the boat along the busy
and breath-taking
taking Grand Canal is a brilliant opportunity for new helms to cut their teeth and it is great
endurance training for the team. I would definitely add this to your bucket list of trips to do”.
