BASTIDE MIRAFLORS SYRAH/
VIEILLES VIGNES GRENACHE 2015
AP Côtes du Roussillon, France
320499 (XD) 750 mL $19.95 2
TASTING NOTE: This wine is almost too
good to be true. A blend of 70% Syrah
and 30% Grenache that was brought
up in concrete tanks (Grenache) and
demi-muids (Syrah), the 2015 Bastide
Miraflors Vieilles Vignes reminded me of
a mini Syrah from California’s Manfred
Krankl (yes I just compared a $14 [USD]
Syrah to Sine Qua Non). It’s a ripe, sexy,
heady beauty that exhibits a deep, purple
color as well as killer notes of smoked
meats, chocolate, blackberry and black
raspberries. Deep, unctuous, open knit
and layered, it continues to change in the
glass, has a seamless and silky profile,
and not a hard edge to be found. It’s a
sensational value that needs to be
tasted to be believed. Drink it anytime
over the coming 2-4 years. Drink Date:
2017-2021. Score: 94 (Jeb Dunnuck,

MONTES ALPHA PINOT NOIR 2015
Aconcagua Coast, Chile
143214 (XD) 750 mL $19.95 1
TASTING NOTE: A tangy and fresh
wine with dried strawberry and hints
of smoke. Medium to full body, round
tannins and a fresh finish. A pretty pinot
with plenty of texture and flavor. Drink
now. Score: 91 (James Suckling,
jamessuckling.com, May 29, 2017)

Opposites attract, so it’s no wonder
we northerners love the wines from the
       southern hemisphere’s top regions:
       Australia, Argentina, Chile, South
       Africa and New Zealand.
Everyone knows that when it’s winter in the northern hemisphere,
it’s summer in the southern; it’s just one of the many quirky things
we love about Down Under. They even have different constellations
       – seriously, come on! But one thing we do share with our southern
neighbours is a passion for crafting truly fine wines. Here’s a
snapshot of a few southern signatures, as well as some exciting
regions, styles and varietals to keep an eye out for.

Winemaking began here over 450 years
ago, and Argentina’s fame is founded on
    Mendoza-grown Malbec. Forward-
    looking producers are refining what
    Argentine Malbec means by exploring
new terroirs, and that includes looking
upward. Argentina is home to the highest
plantings in the world, and at an altitude
of 3,111 metres, the Altura Máxima
    vineyard is the highest anywhere.

Australia is home to some of the oldest
ungrafted vines in the world; transported

Though grape growing
at altitude and on steep
slopes presents its
challenges, in the right
hands, mountain vineyards
yield some truly fine wines.
Growing wine in mountain vineyards can be hard work, but
the results can be some of the finest, most expressive and
long-lived wines in the world. We’ve collected a range of
mountain wines from mountain ranges on three continents
to deliciously illustrate the point.

MOUNTAIN
Mountain wines aren’t easy to produce, but when growers
and winemakers rise to the challenge, the rewards can
be spectacular. Here are five factors that must be taken
into account when making these dream wines.

                                          1/ Aspect & Slope
Grapes need sunlight and warmth to ripen, which is why aspect and slope
are key in mountain wines. Aspect refers to the direction a vineyard slope
faces and determines the potential sunlight grapevines get in a day; this is
particularly important in cooler, less sunny climates. Sloping vineyards are
less prone to rot, overheating and frost, since they encourage airflow.

                                          2/ Elevation
Sometimes the sheer height of a vineyard makes a big difference. Higher
vineyards experience lower temperatures, which is important in hot regions.
Many wine regions in California, meanwhile, are blanketed by fog at times
throughout the day; mountain vineyards can avoid the potential loss of
sunlight by soaring above the fog line.

                                          3/ Temperature Swings
Diurnal temperature variation, that is, the swing in temperature between
night and day, is crucial for wine-growing. While grapes require warmth,
too much will diminish a wine’s natural acidity and, eventually, cause heat
stress. Mountain vineyards, farther from heat-trapping flatlands and bodies
of water, allow for refreshing overnight cooling in otherwise hot spots.

                                          4/ Poor Soils
This doesn’t mean the soil is short on cash; it refers to rocky, stony soils
that aren’t overly rich, soft or waterlogged. Grapevines thrive in soils with
sufficient drainage and balanced mineral nutrients, making mountain
vineyards ideal, since richer soils tend to erode or wash downhill, while
the toughest, rockiest, “poorest” stuff stays.

                                          5/ Hand-Harvesting
The thing about making wine on a mountaintop or steep mountainside is
that you can’t always get a tractor up there. Harvesting grapes by hand
is more costly, yet it can yield better quality by minimizing the amount of
unripe, damaged or otherwise undesirable fruit in the finished wine.
CATCH
THE SPIRIT
St. Patrick’s Day and fine Irish whiskey go together like U and 2.
But what makes whiskey different from the likes of Scotch? Well, Irish
whiskey uses both malted and unmalted barley and is usually triple-
distilled (Scotch is distilled twice), resulting in a smooth spirit that tends
to reveal more of the flavour of the grain. Pour one of these, and St. Pat’s
will be a Beautiful Day.
