Guiding Principles
• First and foremost, we will be guided by Our Highline Promise to know
  every student by name, strength and need so they graduate prepared for
  the future they choose.
• We will follow public health guidelines to protect the health and safety of
  students, staff, and families.
• We will engage our families, students and staff to the best of our ability
  given the short timeline to understand how to address their needs.
• We will prioritize the needs of students who are most reliant on the
  educational system.
• We will provide every student with the opportunity for in-person
  instruction to the extent possible within the requirements of social
  distancing.

Our Commitment to Students & Families
• We will articulate clear expectations of schools and teachers so students
  and families know what to expect.
• We will support coherent weekly transitions between in-school and
  distance learning.
• We will provide alternative instructional plans, including full-time distance
  learning, for families who choose not to participate in in-school instruction.
• We will plan for a seamless transition to full-time distance learning for all
  students, if necessary for public health.
• We will expect consistency of high-quality instruction and student learning
  experience across classrooms and schools.
• We will focus on the social-emotional needs of our students,
  acknowledging these needs have been heightened by the pandemic.

Health & Safety Requirements
• As of today, students, staff, and any visitors, including parents and
  guardians, will be required to wear face masks/face shields based on
  OSPI guidance.
• Students and staff who are experiencing illness should stay home.
• There will be a health screening process for students and staff.
• We will maintain 6-foot distance between people, except for times
  either necessary for the student’s health or safety; or when the time
  closer than 6-feet will be very short.
• Students will not be able to share most materials or supplies.

Our Restrictions—DOH and OSPI
• Department of Health and OSPI are deciding many of the rules we
  must work with to bring students and teachers back.
• The biggest & most difficult rule is the requirement to maintain a 6-
  foot distance between people as much of the time as possible.
   • Exceptions include time on the bus and hallway passing time.
• The 6-foot rule means that each in-person class can be only half the
  size as last year—meaning that we can have far fewer students in
  each school at any one time.

What We Know Today (July 1, 2020)
• We will offer two models for this fall
   • A hybrid model, students will receive 2 days of in-person instruction and 3
     days of distance learning per week
   • A virtual academy with no in-person instruction
• Families will be able to choose to participate in the hybrid model or
  virtual academy
   • We will survey families next week about this option; we will ask for a
     commitment to one model or the other as we get closer to September

What We Know Today (July 1, 2020)
• The learning platform for hybrid model distance learning days has
  been identified
   • Elementary schools will use SeeSaw
   • Middle and high school will use Google Classroom
• Learning platform options for the virtual academy are being evaluated

What We Know Today (July 1, 2020)
• In the hybrid model all students are in school 2 days per week
   • AA/*/BB schedule, with 50% of students in attendance Monday & Tuesday;
     Wednesday (the * day) for collaboration and distance learning development,
     along with cleaning; and the other 50% of students in attendance on
     Thursday & Friday
• TBD—some groups of students may be able to attend 4 days/week
  (M-T & Th-F)
   • Focused on kindergarteners and students who are most reliant on education
     systems, such as students who qualify for special education; McKinney-Vento;
     students who haven’t engaged in the last few months; English Language
     Learners . . .

What We Know Today (July 1, 2020)
• Middle and high schools will have 3 classes per quarter, as opposed to
  6 classes per semester
   • Based on family and teacher feedback, we believe this will allow students and
     teachers to better focus
   • High school students will still be able to earn 6 credits per year
• Middle and high schools will have “closed campuses” meaning that
  students cannot leave for lunch
   • The purpose of this is to reduce the number of people that students are in
     contact with
