HYMN OF PRAISE Sweet Holy Spirit

COLLECT OF THE DAY
Celebrant: God be with you.
People: And also with you.
Celebrant: Let us pray.

A
lmighty God, you have built your Church upon the foundation of the apostles
and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief cornerstone: Grant us so to be
joined together in unity of spirit by their teaching, that we may be made a holy
temple acceptable to you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns
with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. AMEN.

FIRST LESSON 2 Samuel 1:1, 17-27

                                                                                 4|Page
After the death of Saul, when David had returned from defeating the Amalekites,
David remained two days in Ziklag.
David intoned this lamentation over Saul and his son Jonathan. (He ordered that The
Song of the Bow be taught to the people of Judah; it is written in the Book of Jashar.)
He said:
Your glory, O Israel, lies slain upon your high places!
      How the mighty have fallen!
      Tell it not in Gath,
          proclaim it not in the streets of Ashkelon;
or the daughters of the Philistines will rejoice,
the daughters of the uncircumcised will exult.

      You mountains of Gilboa,
let there be no dew or rain upon you,
         nor bounteous fields!
For there the shield of the mighty was defiled,
the shield of Saul, anointed with oil no more.

From the blood of the slain,
from the fat of the mighty,
the bow of Jonathan did not turn back,
nor the sword of Saul return empty.

Saul and Jonathan, beloved and lovely!
         In life and in death they were not divided;
      they were swifter than eagles,
         they were stronger than lions.

O daughters of Israel, weep over Saul,
who clothed you with crimson, in luxury,
who put ornaments of gold on your apparel.

      How the mighty have fallen
in the midst of the battle!

Jonathan lies slain upon your high places.
         I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan;
      greatly beloved were you to me;
your love to me was wonderful,
         passing the love of women.

      How the mighty have fallen,
and the weapons of war perished!

                                                                                    5|Page
Lector: Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people.
People: Thanks be to God.
Remain seated for the psalm and say in unison.
PSALM Psalm 130 De profundis
1 Out of the depths have I called to you, O LORD;
      LORD, hear my voice; *
let your ears consider well the voice of my supplication.
2 If you, LORD, were to note what is done amiss, *
      O Lord, who could stand?
3 For there is forgiveness with you; *
      therefore you shall be feared.
4 I wait for the LORD; my soul waits for him; *
in his word is my hope.
5 My soul waits for the LORD,
more than watchmen for the morning, *
more than watchmen for the morning.
6 O Israel, wait for the LORD, *
      for with the LORD there is mercy;
7 With him there is plenteous redemption, *
and he shall redeem Israel from all their sins.

Please stand and sing before and after the Gospel is read.

THE HOLY GOSPEL Mark 5:21-43
Celebrant: The Holy Gospel of our Savior Jesus Christ according to Mark.
People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.

W
hen Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd
gathered around him; and he was by the sea. Then one of the leaders of the
synagogue named Jairus came and, when he saw him, fell at his feet and
begged him repeatedly, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Come

                                                                                  6|Page
and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well, and live.” So he went with
him.
And a large crowd followed him and pressed in on him. Now there was a woman who
had been suffering from hemorrhages for twelve years. She had endured much under
many physicians, and had spent all that she had; and she was no better, but rather
grew worse. She had heard about Jesus, and came up behind him in the crowd and
touched his cloak, for she said, “If I but touch his clothes, I will be made well.”
Immediately her hemorrhage stopped; and she felt in her body that she was healed of
her disease. Immediately aware that power had gone forth from him, Jesus turned
about in the crowd and said, “Who touched my clothes?” And his disciples said to
him, “You see the crowd pressing in on you; how can you say, ‘Who touched me?’” He
looked all around to see who had done it. But the woman, knowing what had
happened to her, came in fear and trembling, fell down before him, and told him the
whole truth. He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and
be healed of your disease.”
While he was still speaking, some people came from the leader’s house to say, “Your
daughter is dead. Why trouble the teacher any further?” But overhearing what they
said, Jesus said to the leader of the synagogue, “Do not fear, only believe.” He allowed
no one to follow him except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James. When they
came to the house of the leader of the synagogue, he saw a commotion, people
weeping and wailing loudly. When he had entered, he said to them, “Why do you
make a commotion and weep? The child is not dead but sleeping.” And they laughed
at him. Then he put them all outside, and took the child’s father and mother and those
who were with him, and went in where the child was. He took her by the hand and
said to her, “Talitha cum,” which means, “Little girl, get up!” And immediately the girl
got up and began to walk about (she was twelve years of age). At this they were
overcome with amazement. He strictly ordered them that no one should know this,
and told them to give her something to eat.
Celebrant: The Gospel of the Lord.
People: Praise to you, Lord Christ.

SERMON The Rev. Harlon Dalton, Missional Priest-in-Charge

JAZZ RESPONSE A musical response to the sermon

Standing, as able
THE NICENE CREED

We believe in one God,
        the Father, the Almighty,
        maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
       the only Son of God,
       eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
                                                                                   7|Page
true God from true God,
        begotten, not made,
        of one Being with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
          he came down from heaven:
was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary
   and became truly human.
     For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
     in accordance with the Scriptures;
  he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified,
who has spoken through the Prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

Forgive, restore, and strengthen us through our Savior Jesus Christ, that we may abide in your
love and serve only your will. AMEN.

PRESENTATION HYMN

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING Eucharistic Prayer 1, Enriching Our Worship
Celebrant: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
Celebrant: Lift up your hearts.
People: We lift them to the Lord.
Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People: It is right to give our thanks and praise.
The Celebrant continues
It is truly right, and good and joyful, to give you thanks, all-holy God, source of life and
fountain of mercy. You have filled us and all creation with your blessing and fed us with
your constant love; you have redeemed us in Jesus Christ and knit us into one body.
Through your Spirit you replenish us and call us to fullness of life. Therefore, joining
with Angels and Archangels and with the faithful of every generation, we lift our voices
with all creation as we sing:

HOLY, HOLY, HOLY
Celebrant and People:

The Celebrant continues
Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of the universe and giver of life. You formed us
in your own image and called us to dwell in your infinite love. You gave the world into
our care that we might be your faithful stewards and show forth your bountiful grace.
But we failed to honor your image in one another and in ourselves; we would not see
your goodness in the world around us; and so we violated your creation, abused one

                                                                                    10 | P a g e
another, and rejected your love. Yet you never ceased to care for us, and prepared the
way of salvation for all people.

Through Abraham and Sarah you called us into covenant with you. You delivered us
from slavery, sustained us in the wilderness, and raised up prophets to renew your
promise of salvation. Then, in the fullness of time, you sent your eternal Word, made
mortal flesh in Jesus. Born into the human family, and dwelling among us, he revealed
your glory. Giving himself freely to death on the cross, he triumphed over evil, opening
the way of freedom and life.

On the night before he died for us, Our Savior Jesus Christ took bread, and when he
had given thanks to you, he broke it and gave it to his friends, and said:
“Take, eat: This is my Body which is given for you.
Do this for the remembrance of me.”
As supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine, and when he had given thanks, he
gave it to them and said:
  “Drink this, all of you:
This is my Blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you and for all for the
forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:
Celebrant and People
Christ has died.
Christ is risen.
Christ will come again.

The Celebrant continues

                                                                                 11 | P a g e
Remembering his death and resurrection, we now present to you from your creation
this bread and this wine. By your Holy Spirit may they be for us the Body and Blood of
our Savior Jesus Christ. Grant that we who share these gifts may be filled with the
Holy Spirit and live as Christ’s Body in the world. Bring us into the everlasting
heritage of your daughters and sons, that with Paul and James and all your saints, past,
present, and yet to come, we may praise your Name for ever.

Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, to you be
honor, glory, and praise, for ever and ever.
The Great AMEN.

THE LORD’S PRAYER
Celebrant: As our Savior Christ has taught us, we now pray,

O
         UR Father in heaven,
         hallowed be your Name,
         your kingdom come,
         your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins,
as we forgive those
who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial,
and deliver us from evil
For the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory
are yours, now and for ever. AMEN.

THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD
The Celebrant breaks the consecrated Bread and a period of silence is kept.
Celebrant: We break this bread to share in the Body of Christ.
                                                                                  12 | P a g e
People: We who are many are one body, for we share in the one bread.

Celebrant: The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ
died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.
