History
The impressive late gothic Victorian home from 1878, incorporates an earlier Georgian house from the early 1700’s as

well as what is purported to be a 13th Century turret in the basement. It was rescued from dereliction in late 2012 when

it was bought and restored by the current owners. In the 18th Century the Georgian house was owned by the

Warburton’s who also owned Straffan House (now the K Club) and sat on extensive grounds. An icehouse at the side

of the house still remains but is now underground. During this period Firmount was leased to the Deasy’s, whose

daughter went on to find the Loreto nuns in Canada. In the mid-19th Century, it was then acquired by the Henry family

who completed a large restoration in 1878 where a Victorian extension was added, and the Georgian house was

modified and wrapped in a matching cement render. Today the Victorian wing of the house has wildly impressive 4.2m

high ceilings which retain their original intricate plasterwork while the Georgian side of the house features a superb cast

iron balustraded cantilevered staircase. In addition, the fireplaces are original and made from a mix of marble and cast

iron, most likely dating from the late 19th century.

The house continued its colourful history by becoming a WWI military hospital for recovering officers in 1917 followed

by a safe house for De Valera. In the late 1920’s the house became a sanatorium, and the adjacent “Doctor’s House”

was built within the Georgian stableyard. In 1964 the house was purchased by the Department of Defence and used

as the Control Centre for Nuclear Tracking. The basement was bunkerised and was supposed to be used by senior

government officials in the event of nuclear war.

Description
Nestled within a private, mature setting, Firmount is centred upon a magnificent Victorian house with

stunning views over the Kildare countryside. Also situated within the grounds is a second

beautiful family home which featured on RTE’s Room to Improve presented by Dermot Bannon in

November 2013.

The property extends to about 7 acres of mature garden grounds with an exceptional array of specimen

trees, which enhance the landscape surrounding both houses. Firmount House has been expertly

restored by the current owners and has played host to weddings, private parties, media film and

photoshoots shoots, yoga retreats and corporate events.

Accessed via an impressive modern stone-pillared entrance with cast-iron gates, Firmount House is

approached along a sweeping gravel driveway, flanked by terraced lawn and mature trees, which leads

to the front of the house where there is ample parking. There is further guest parking to the east of

the property and an overflow car park to the north.

Firmount House
Firmount House is an extensive three-storey above basement house that extends to approximately

13,000 square feet. While the accommodation has been extended and adapted since its original

construction, many notable period features, both internally and externally have been retained.

The accommodation is entered through a magnificent reception hall, which leads to the interconnecting

dining room and drawing room. Both rooms feature original wooden floors, 13 feet ceilings with original

plasterwork, cornicing and ceiling rose with large timber sash double glazed windows. The dining room

also includes a beautiful feature pink marble fireplace and combined with the drawing room, can

comfortably sit up to 110 guests. There is a magnificent set of vintage French doors to the rear of the

room, which open onto the south facing terrace and gardens.

The ground floor also comprises a butler’s pantry, a HSE approved stainless steel commercial kitchen

and a library with original fireplace and built-in banquette seating. There are also five toilet cubicles,

including one approved for use as a disabled bathroom.

A key characteristic of the house is the extent and flexibility of the internal accommodation with the

ability to host lavish gatherings. The property was granted planning permission in 2017 for

café/restaurant/events venue with fire certificate and disability access certificate (planning reference no.

15/1145).

The first floor is accessed via a spectacular staircase with beautiful exposed original brick walls. The

bedroom accommodation is laid out on this floor and comprises seven bedrooms (four en suite) and

two shower rooms. The remainder of the bedroom accommodation is located on the second floor and

includes three bedrooms, a bathroom and kitchen, which can serve as a self-contained apartment.

There is extensive space at basement level with eight rooms in total currently housing a carpentry

room, wood storage room, boiler room and multiple additional storage rooms.

year-old home that was expertly renovated and tailored for modern day family living in 2013. The

property has the benefit of thermodynamic solar panels, a heat recovery ventilation system, insulation,

double glazed windows, and underfloor heating leading to a commendable B2 rating.

It is entered through a quaint porch that leads to the hallway with access to the downstairs bedroom

with en suite and the open plan kitchen/living room. This room is extremely bright with windows that

stretch double height from the floor to the ceiling on the first floor. The kitchen has built-in Miele

appliances, a heat recovery system and underfloor heating.

The sitting room/BBQ room is an extremely rare and unique room with an indoor barbeque, which was

imported from South Africa and built into the wall. This room also includes sliding door windows that

fold all the way back, which gives access a patio area to the rear of the house. There is also a utility area

with storage, bathroom, and laundry area.

The bedroom accommodation is laid out on the first floor and comprises an excellent master bedroom

suite with a spacious walk-in-wardrobe and ensuite. There are two additional bedrooms on this floor,

one with a dressing room, which is fitted with plumbing to create a shower room. Either side of the

atrium is a cosy library room and study.
