                 The Story Baker
What are the ingredients of a good life?

                 ABOUT THE BOOK
In many ways, baking bread is like a dance. The rhythmic knead-
ing of the dough, the twist of the hands and the sway of the hips
all lend it elasticity. Ex-dancer Sofie – now temping at the village
bakery – finds it fascinating to watch the Italian baker Giacomo at
work. Though new to the job, she already plans to quit: the end of
her career has thrown her life too much off course. After all, who
is she if she can't dance? Who will love her if she can no longer
shine on the stage? To her own surprise, however, Sofie comes to
see the little bakery as far more than just a place of work, for it is
here that she discovers the wisdom of a simple man, the joy of
small things and the courage to embrace change.

                       Automaton
                       A modern-day Rear Window

                       ABOUT THE BOOK
Tiff, a young mother, has to get by on poorly paid online jobs for
the platform Automaton due to an anxiety disorder that makes her
practically incapable of leaving the house. It is only when she wit-
nesses a crime through her browser window and is forbidden to
tell anyone about it that she finally begins to suspect the company
of passing her labour off as AI and selling it at a high price. With
a Hitchcockian mastery of suspense, Berit Glanz depicts a precari-
ous shadow world behind the technology that dominates our every-
day lives. A visionary novel that moves between the claustropho-
bic space of the protagonist's own four walls and the hemp fields
of California, shining a light on new forms of exploitative relation-
ship and opportunities for virtual solidarity.

                    JENS EISEL

                    Cooper
USA, 1971: In the Land of Unlimited Opportunity

                    ABOUT THE BOOK
Among the passengers on a flight to Seattle is a man with a brief-
case. He will go down in history as Dan Cooper, though his true
identity will never be discovered. After extorting a large ransom
with the aid of a homemade bomb, he parachutes out of the plane
and disappears. In this book, Jens Eisel gives a sensitive account
of a Vietnam veteran who risks everything in an attempt to start a
new life – and of a crew who strain every sinew to ensure a peace-
ful outcome. A semi-documentary novel about the courage of a
desperate man, the fading belief in America's future under Nixon,
                    and the harshness of life.

                    ▪ The story of America's most mysterious aircraft hijacking
                    ▪ A Tarantino-like mix of criminal energy, tender-heartedness and

                          LIN HIERSE

                          What We Dream Of
One thing you can't choose: daughterhood

                          ABOUT THE BOOK
A young woman stands on a mountain in Shaoxing, where she has
come to bury her grandmother. As for her own identity, it is a
question she would rather avoid. Maybe she is at home every-
where a little or nowhere completely. Her mother left China years
ago to start a new life in Germany, and her own dreams are much
the same. Yet there is a difference, because the places blur and
she cannot get rid of the ghosts of her family.
Subtly, courageously and with a fine feeling for words, Lin Hierse
tells the story of a mother/daughter relationship and touches mat-
ters of identity, intimacy and distinction. On the traces of German-
Chinese history, she finds a way to understand migration not as a
                          trauma, but as a dream.

                          ▪ An autofictional novel about daughterhood, identity and the lega-

                   ECKHART NICKEL

                   Spitzweg
"When life follows art, art becomes life."

                   ABOUT THE BOOK
"I never cared much for art": opening with this confession, the nar-
rator relates how his admired friend Carl – a devotee of the Ger-
man romanticist painter Spitzweg – changed all that. When his
passion becomes so all-consuming that he is even prepared to
commit a crime, the bond between the two old school friends is
stretched to the limit. A dramatic search for a stolen painting be-
gins, following a trail laid by an ingenious woman.
As in his previous novel Hysteria, Eckhart Nickel tells the story of
an obsession: there, all that is left of nature is artificial reproduc-
tion; here, art becomes humanity's "second nature".
A sophisticated critique of the image idolatry of a socially degen-
erate digital society and its all-powerful instagrammery.

                     ABOUT THE BOOK
When Charlotte bumps into her tutor Wolfgang one day in the cor-
ridor of her Berlin apartment block, she has no idea that he has
been observing her for weeks from the opposite flat. For his part,
he sees in her the girl from a Vermeer painting and feels inspired.
Katharina Korbach tells the compelling story of a fragile relation-

                   WILLI ACHTEN

                   Going Back
That summer night that changed our lives

                   ABOUT THE BOOK
Jakob Kilv returns to the village of his childhood. Back in the
primeval landscape of the mountains, he is assailed by memories
of the last summer of his youth. His old friends have remained
here; even his childhood sweetheart Liv has never been away.
Back then, they waged a campaign against a ski lift tycoon named
Bolltner with a crackpot scheme to open up the valley to winter
sports tourism. Their protest got out of hand and one of his
friends lost his life. But what really happened that summer? And
what went on between Jakob's mother and Bruno – did his father
suspect something? Once again, Jakob has to decide whether he
can bring himself to stay in this place.
A novel about the insatiable desire to belong, the power of the un-
spoken and that moment in life that changes everything.

                    ABOUT THE BOOK
A chic penthouse apartment in Hamburg. Sarah and Marc, a cou-
ple in their early thirties, and their housemate Henning: three
friends sharing their dreams. For three years, they have been a
close-knit circle. Or so it seems. Until, one morning, Henning is
found lying in a pool of his own blood, brutally murdered. All the

was it a joint act? And what caused their once so strong affection

                      ABOUT THE BOOK
Isa Winter's job is all about waiting. She is a private detective. A
really good one. She observes from a distance, remaining anony-

changes. Isa is so impressed with her client that she breaks her
own rules: discovering in the course of her investigation that Katha-

Chief Inspector Katharina Sismann has to face the daily cut-and-
thrust of a male-dominated world, and her record is impressive –
to the chagrin of many of her colleagues. But then living on the
edge is par for the course in Kata's private life too, where count-
less affairs, the after-effects of a head injury and her destructive
lifestyle combine to make her lonely – though also hungry for suc-
cess. When a fashionable and extremely rich writer is brutally mur-
dered, Kata embarks on the case of her life – one that will shake
to its foundations all that she has ever believed in …

The Commissario and the Dottoressa –
           Storm over Elba
           A Case for Berensen & Luccarelli 1

Beaches to die for – and deadly cliffs

           ABOUT THE BOOK
           Elba – Italy's third-largest island, a popular holiday destination,
and the new home of Hagen Berensen, who has bought himself a
villa here after quitting his job with the German criminal investiga-
tion department. His new home help, Fiorina Luccarelli, is a little
too temperamental for Berensen's liking, but at least she speaks
German. Following the mysterious death of an acquaintance, Fiori-
na's brother finds himself in danger – what a lucky coincidence
that her new boss is an ex-detective! On top of all this, the mafioso
who conned Hagen into buying the ramshackle villa appears to
have a hand in the affair. Hagen wastes no time in forging himself
a Europol ID and the pair set out to investigate …

Hamburg, 1920: the Douglas Perfumery is celebrating its tenth an-

expansion, the Douglas Sisters Marie and Anna Carstens hand
over the day-to-day business to their goddaughters Hertha and Lu-

                   ABOUT THE BOOK
Hanna, the daughter of a rich merchant family, feels suffocated by
her narrow-minded milieu. Scandalously, she breaks off her
planned engagement with an "eligible" suitor. A chance en-
counter with a group of young dancers from the legendary
women's community of Loheland comes as a revelation for Hanna.
She decides she wants the same freedom and autonomy for her-
self, and flees Hamburg to embark on a course at Loheland

cap it all, a charred body is found in the engine room. Together
with safety specialist Kendra, Liam has to find out who is trying to
scupper the mission and whether there is a murderer in their

                      Strafdivision 999 - 1942 to 1945

The penal battalions of the Wehrmacht

                      ABOUT THE BOOK
The "other" soldiers were all those initially rejected by the
Wehrmacht and deemed "unfit for military service" by the Nazis.
Many were resistance fighters, detained in prisons or concentra-
tion camps. But Hitler's army commanders needed more and
more soldiers, and so from 1942 onwards, the regime's oppo-
nents were forced to don the uniform of the hated Nazi state and
go to war. But they never gave up the fight against the Nazis. In
this book, Joachim Käppner tells the story of those men who stood
up to the forces of evil – and who have been unjustly forgotten.

                    Projects for a better world

                    ABOUT THE BOOK
Climate change and the destruction of rainforests, mass extinction
of species and pandemics, exploding consumption and the pollu-
tion of our oceans – all this is threatening the diversity of life on
earth and, moreover, our own survival. The 2020s are our last
chance to change tack. Many innovative ideas provide hope for
a better life by working with nature, not against it. In this book,
Ulrich Eberl evaluates the solution strategies from an informed
perspective, giving a vivid account of the most exciting projects

Erotic Humanism
On the Philosophy of Gender Relations

The erotics of relationship

ABOUT THE BOOK
Discrimination in the age of #MeToo, catcalling, manspreading,
sexism – few issues are currently as much in the public eye as
these. This book discusses the ethical and philosophical aspects of
gender relations. It is a plea for an erotic humanism, a humane
and cooperative relationship between the sexes and a relaxed erot-
ic experience, for equal respect and equal recognition, for the

                        The First of their Kind
World-Changing Women. 1918 to the Present

Without women, we are only half a world

                        ABOUT THE BOOK
Simone Veil, Margaret Thatcher, Angela Merkel, Kamala Harris: all
these women are notable for securing their place in a man's
world, changing it bit by bit. This book turns the spotlight on
these and many other firsts of their kind. It shows not just what is
lacking when there are no women at the table, but also how they
have overcome resistance over the past hundred years in order to
reach the top and bring new topics to the agenda.
The author has interviewed many "Firsts" as part of her rigorous re-
search. She proves that the battle is not yet won, with half of the
human race still far from wielding half the power.

           TOBIAS HABERL

           The Mortified Man
In Defence of an Endangered Species

How to be a man in the modern era

           ABOUT THE BOOK
Men are the bogeymen of modern society. Feminism portrays
them as deficient beings; "toxic masculinity" has become a battle
cry. As for the alleged offenders themselves, they either bend with
the winds of change or are overwhelmed by a logic that brands
their masculine identity destructive. What does it feel like to be
thus affronted if you are neither a model feminist nor a dinosaur?
Why is it so difficult to accept a cultural change that devalues
everything that was sold to you as desirable in your youth and la-
bels it embarrassing, dubious or immoral? And how does a mod-
ern man remain true to his identity – open and empathetic, but
           not sanitised beyond recognition?

                            I Would Prefer Not To
A Rebellion against the Tyranny of Positive Thinking

Freeing ourselves from the shackles of happiness

                            ABOUT THE BOOK
This book is a call for resistance against the ideology of our time:
the tyranny of happiness. Magazines, coaches and even shower
gels constantly encourage us to be positive. It is our duty to consid-
er failure as an opportunity, avoid negative emotions and constant-
ly develop our self. Yet this terror of the positive is annoying, harm-
ful to everyone and it weakens social cohesion: We deem happi-
ness as personal prestige and political problems as individual
failure. This is demonstrated not only by psychological research
but also by history. The only way out is rebellion: swearing is the
expression of pure freedom, there is no art without pain, and
anger is the engine of progress. The world was not changed by
happy people, but by those, who were dissatisfied. In this tren-
chant cultural critique, Schreiber convincingly debunks the ruling
ideology of our time: the pressure to be happy.

                       Joy
An Exploration of the Lighter Side of Life

A journey into the land of joy

                       ABOUT THE BOOK
"Diving into the water on a hot summer day. Coolness collapses
over your head, it smells of algae and forest pond. A few swims
and everything becomes timeless and weightless. Turning on your
back, letting yourself drift. Above, the blue of the sky, treetops
moving in the light wind. It carries the sounds of summer life
along the waterside. Children cheering, beats to which teenagers
dance, someone jumping into the water with a loud splash. Para-
sols, towels, families in Sunday stupor.
The more I thought about the emotion of joy, the more I felt the
need to study it as closely as possible. To chart it like an unknown
territory. What happens in our brain when we feel joy? What
does it do to the rest of our body? How does our experience of
joy change over a lifetime? What kinds of joy could I identify on a
day-to-day basis? What is this feeling, what does it evoke, how is
                       it celebrated in other cultures?
This book is a voyage of discovery into an alluring land that shim-
mers with adventure. The land of joy."

                  Sea Rescue
My Time Aboard the SEA-EYE 4

                  Diary from a disaster zone

                  ABOUT THE BOOK
In spring 2021, Tobias Schlegl spent several weeks as a para-
medic, helping to rescue refugees off the coast of Libya in what
turned out to be a white-knuckle mission for him and the crew.
First the difficulties encountered on training drills and the tense
wait for the first call-out, then SOS calls, cat-and-mouse chases
with the Libyan "coastguard", people in the water, people collaps-
ing unconscious on board – and finally the tortuous search for a
safe harbour for the 400-plus rescuees. Tobias Schlegl writes of
despair and fear, but also of moments of hope in a diary that
stands as a record of the everyday tragedy unfolding off the
                  Mediterranean coasts.

                All You Need is Within

A plea for more self-love and mindfulness

                ABOUT THE BOOK
A great deal has happened since the fateful day when Gela All-
mann narrowly escaped death after falling from a height of 800
metres at a photoshoot in Iceland. Although she is still haunted by
the pain and fear she experienced, it is often the painful and chal-
lenging times in our lives that teach us the most, if we can only
learn to accept them and face the future in a spirit of positivity. In
this book, the author shares her journey with her readers and of-
fers a 13-point plan for coping with defeats and calamities. After
all, it's always hard to see your dreams shattered – the important
thing is to be able to rise again.

Making the Weather: the Alps
Alpine meteorology – the origins of our climate

ABOUT THE BOOK
Föhn and fall winds, record high temperatures, dry valleys, cloud-
bursts and torrential rain: the Alps set the tone for Europe's weath-
er patterns. Here, five vegetation zones extending over 5000 kilo-
metres from the Arctic to the Mediterranean are concentrated to-
gether at an altitude of almost 5000 metres. Sven Plöger and Rolf
Schlenker show how this region has influenced our changing cli-
mate for generations, shaping the day-to-day weather conditions
in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. On their travels from central
Switzerland to the far west of Austria, they talk to mountain
guides, glaciologists and tourism planers. Well-researched, acces-
sible and illustrated with concrete examples, this book explains the
science behind our weather phenomena – and the ideas pro-
posed for countering climate change.

                Faroes

                ABOUT THE BOOK
18 islands in the North Atlantic, rugged cliffs, harsh weather,
more sheep than people: after watching a documentary on the
Faroe Islands, Anja Mazuhn and her husband fall head over heels
in love with the place. Inspired by a spontaneous holiday on Eystur-
oy, the second-largest of the islands, they find a small house with
a sea view and seize the opportunity for a new start. Full of enthu-
siasm, Anja discovers a new home with breathtaking scenery, fasci-
nating people and a complicated language. She comes to absorb
the laid-back attitude of the Faroese and, in the process, finds
what she has been looking for all her life: contentment, communi-
                ty, and adventure.

                ▪ A brave new start amid soaring mountains and steep fjords
                ▪ A homage to the Nordic soul

           HENNING KLÜVER

           A User's Guide to Italy
In the land where the lemon trees bloom

           ABOUT THE BOOK
Want to know what makes the Italian take on life so unique? What
Italians eat when their kids don't fancy pasta? And why so many of
our shoes come with a "Made in Italy" tag? In this book, Henning
Klüver takes a light-hearted look at the classic tropes of his adop-
tive home: the family and the mafia, fashion, culture and good
food. He strolls through the buzzing narrow streets of its towns
and cities, and traverses picturesque landscapes. He explains why
the country's domestic politics resemble a soap opera, and finds
answers to the question of why the place is so dear to our hearts.
