current Carlucci collection come from

MASTER THE VEL-
VET TECH- Different types of fibres can be used to weave
velvet. In the past natural fibres such as silk and
NIQUE. cotton were mainly used. Today however there
are more choices including synthetic fibres such as
polyester and viscose. Velvet can be woven in two
ways. Traditionally velvet is made on an epinglé loom,
where two rods are used, one to create a loop and a
second one to cut the loop and create the pile. One of
the Carlucci velvets that is woven in this way is the ar ti-
cle Vanquish. However most modern velvets, including most
Carlucci velvets are woven on a modern doublepiece loom
that weaves two pieces of velvet above each other at the same
time. The pile of the two pieces are connected during weaving
and then cut apar t on the loom. The two lengths are then wound
on seperate rolls as an exact opposite to each other.

The “angora” goat originates from the steep mountain slopes of Tibet. Through the centuries the species made
its way down to Turkey as far as the province of Ankara, hence the name “angora”. The Turks star ted breeding
the goats for their wool in the 16th Centur y. Up until the mid 1800’s the province of Ankara held a monopoly

position on Mohair. Today however most mohair comes from the United States of America and South Africa,
where the angora goats are bred commercially.

Angora billy goats are well groomed and brushed regularly to ensure the finest quality product. The goats are
shorn in a clean environment on a swept floor to keep the hair as clean as possible. The hair is then processed

to remove grease and dir t. The next step is to spin the hair into a fine yarn which can be woven into fabric.
Mohair is an extraordinar y and wonderfully extravagant ‘living’ fibre with exceptional proper ties and characte-

ristics. Its beautiful silky sheen is in a class of its own and cannot be imitated. The fibre is long, strong, resilient
and durable. It readily absorbs the effects of body heat, moisture and pressure. It has a good affinity to dyestuffs,
is naturally colourfast and flame retardant. Mohair pile is resistant to felting and the fibre retains its gloss even
with intensive use.
Revel in the extremely soft touch of this wildly luxurious product. This collection will appeal to all those intere-

ICONS 54 | 55By 1991 Richard and Ellen had star ted introducing
their own designs to their assor tment of textiles
and launched these as a wholesaler under the name
CHIVASSO Chivasso.
To house the wholesaling and product development
side of their business, they opened offices and a
small warehouse in Zoetermeer.
They star ted designing unique collections and sold
these primarily in Belgium and The Netherlands. In
1995 they succesfully took par t in a trade show
in Frankfur t, Germany to launch their own unique
brand of fabrics to an international audience. Within

a shor t period of time Chivasso fabrics and wallpa-
pers were available throughout Europe and even in
far flung places in South America, Australia and the
