All Saints & Martyrs Church, Langley
Wood Street, Middleton, Manchester M24 5GL

The amazing Langley Cross stands some 13 or so metres
tall and is housed in All Saints & Martyrs Church. Sculpted
in aluminium by Geoffrey Clarke, it is probably the artist’s
biggest commission and was cast using pioneer techniques
which he himself developed. Sadly Geoffrey Clarke died
four years ago and since then a lot has been written about
his work, which can be found all over the country. Langley
is truly blessed to have this breath-taking work of art.
There will be talks on the Langley Cross during the opening
times of the church.

               History
St Mary in the Baum Church, Rochdale
St Mary’s Gate, Rochdale OL16 1DZ

St Mary in the Baum Church was awarded Grade I listing by Historic England in 2015. Rochdale’s ‘Hidden Gem’, it is a rare
example of the work of Sir Ninian Comper (1864-1960) and is the only church of his design in the northern ecclesiastical
Province of York. Modest in design from the outside, the interior is a revelation. Built in 1911, to replace an earlier 18th
century ‘chapel of ease’, the church has an unusual arrangement with the main aisle, choir and sanctuary on the south side
and (as the church is dedicated to St Mary) and a ‘Jesus’ Chapel on the north side. Pillars and unusual roundel windows are
from the original church of 1742. The church has an exquisite carved oak rood screen and a striking Comper designed, War
Memorial window. Refreshments will be available.
There will be a choral evensong taking place at 3pm on Sunday 16 September which all visitors are warmly invited to attend.

St Thomas Church, Newhey
Church Street, Newhey, Rochdale OL16 3QS

We will hold both organised and self-guided tours of
our church which had to be completely restored after a
devastating fire in 2007. View our new leaflet to help you
admire the restoration and marvel at its new light and
     bright interior.
Visitors will be able to see where the rebuilding work was
carried out and admire the skill of the dedicated craftsmen
who have restored the building beyond its former glory.
The church has an outstanding carved pulpit and font. The
large fully restored organ was kindly donated by St. Peter’s
Church Loughborough and we hope visiting organists from
other churches might like to play this beautiful instrument.
All the church is wheelchair accessible except the Chancel
which has three small steps). The event is not suitable for
children under 5yrs. Max 10 people per tour/session.
Church St is located immediately after St Thomas’ Primary
School on Huddersfield Rd (A640). It is a small lane newly
laid with speed bumps and passing places with a new
church car-park situated 100 yards beyond the church on
     the left.

YellowaY Motor Coach Museum
Outside Touchstones Rochdale, The Esplanade, Rochdale
          OL16 1AQ

A real treat for Rochdale folk seeking coach travel and
holiday nostalgia will be a visit to the town by the mobile
YellowaY Motor Coach Museum. The 1915 incorporation of
Holt Bros (Rochdale) Ltd, celebrated in 2015, which became
Yelloways Motor Services Ltd in 1932 operated luxury coach
services from their Rochdale base from 1932 to 1988,
taking locals on their annual holidays and day trips in great
style to destinations all over Britain.
The Yelloway HQ and depot were located on Weir Street,
now the site of Number One Riverside. This mobile
museum is housed in an original 1976 YellowaY coach,
converted into what is probably Britain’s smallest transport
museum. Visitors will be able to view the collection of
YellowaY memorabilia, photos, posters and model coaches,
covering this extended period of the company’s history on
Saturday and dream of Wakes Weeks holidays gone by.
