Vision Statement: Good Shepherd Catholic School is an inclusive community growing together in faith by living our Catholic values and
beliefs. We are guided by catholic Gospel teachings of Jesus Christ, in partnership with parents, caregivers, parish and the wider
community. Our school is dedicated to fostering life-long learning through educational excellence encapsulating the spiritual, cognitive,
emotional, social and physical development of the child.
Principal’s Message
Dear Parents and Caregivers of Good Shepherd Catholic School
For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.
(Matthew 6:14)
This weekend the Catholic Church begins the special time in the Church’s calendar called Holy Week.
It is during this week that we remember the events of the last week of Jesus’ earthly life. At Masses
on the weekend, we will celebrate Passion Sunday. It is on this day that we commemorate Jesus
coming into Jerusalem, riding on a donkey as a humble man yet, people were acclaiming him as their
king. Five days later the same people were calling for him to be crucified. This time last year, we
were in lockdown and unable to gather as a Christian community to attend Masses. I encourage you
to try to attend Masses this weekend as we prepare to celebrate the greatest feast in the Catholic
Church.
During next week, the school will assist the students to reflect on these events. Each morning after
recess, the students will reflect on the events of Palm Sunday and Holy Thursday. Then, on
Wednesday afternoon, in the Church, the Year 5 students will lead us in a reflection on the events of
Good Friday.
Congratulations to the Year 3 students who will receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation on Saturday.
This is a significant step in their faith journey and a great time to receive it, being just before Easter.
I would like to thank Miss Pesce and Mrs Princi for all the work they have carried out in preparing the
students and to Mrs Deans for coordinating this with the Parish.
Our prayer for them is that this is the first of many times they
experience this beautiful sacrament of healing.
A reminder to all our families that Monday March 29 is early close so that Parent/Teacher interviews
can take place. Please make a time to see your child’s teacher as this meeting will be an opportunity
to discuss how well they have settled into the new school year as well as setting goals in order for
them to achieve academic and social growth. Information regarding booking an interview time has
been in previous newsletters. Please ensure that you have made arrangements to collect your child
from school by 12:30pm on this day.
I would also like to remind families that next week brings Term One to an end. School will finish for
staff and students on Thursday April 1. As this will be the last newsletter for the term, I would like to
thank all our families for their support. After a slightly different start to the year, the students have
settled in well. I would like to take this opportunity to wish all our families a very happy and Holy
Easter and that the resurrection of Jesus brings you joy. I also hope that your children enjoy the time
away from school routine and come back to school on Tuesday 20th April
refreshed and ready for the challenges of an eleven week term.
Stay safe and stay well in the week ahead.

School Fees
School Fees 2021 NOW DUE
The first instalment was due on Friday 5 March 2021. Thank you to all the parents who have
made payment. It is a school requirement that each family has an approved, up to date,
payment plan in place. Every family is required to complete and submit a new Payment
Option form each year. Please complete and return the Payment Option Form via
email finance@gsl.wa.edu.au or direct to the office. In justice to families who pay their
school fees regularly and on time, the school will rigorously follow up all overdue school fee
accounts. Good Shepherd Catholic School is supportive of families who find themselves in
difficult circumstances and early contact should be made with the Principal to enable
assistance to be given. Families paying via direct debit from a
nominated bank account please ensure the amount is enough to cover
the total outstanding amount prior to 30 September 2021.
Child Safety
For the safety of our children please consider the following at drop off and pick up times.
o NO parking in the pick-up line, even to collect a child from Kindy or Pre-Primary
o Please only park in the marked bays
o Only park in the disabled bay if you have a valid ACROD sticker
o NO parking in the bus bays – those marked with orange/yellow lines in the driveway
o NO parking in the driveway outside Pre-Primary
o Be mindful of how close you are parking on the verge of Morley
Drive that you are not obstructing the view of exiting cars.
o Use the crosswalk to demonstrate road safety to your child/ren
when parking in the church carpark
Reminders will be left on cars and provided to parents from next week if
these requests are overlooked. Please do not be offended when you
are asked to move your car or use the crosswalk as our most important
consideration is the safety of all the children.19 March 2021 Good Shepherd Catholic School
NAPLAN 2021
NAPLAN information brochures have been sent home to parents of students in
Year 3 and Year 5. Please look out for this document that provides information
for parents and carers about NAPLAN and how you can support your child. Your child will sit the
NAPLAN online tests except for the Year 3 Writing test which remains in paper format.
Students will be exposed to the format and process of the tests prior to the test
period, however please take the time to visit the public demonstrations site with your child to
get an idea of what the tests look like and to give them opportunities to practice:
http://nap.edu.au/online-assessment/public-demonstration-site
The dates for NAPLAN are Tuesday 11 May – Friday 21 May and although tests will be scheduled
for specific days in this time, catch up tests will be conducted during the whole period to
give all students an opportunity to complete all tests.
Good Shepherd School Website
Our website is currently being redesigned and we are hoping to be able to
launch it soon. We will be phasing out the use of the Smart Link App and
utilising the features of the new website platform including submitting
online absentee forms and live calendars to ensure we are up to date with
school events. Please refer to the current website for any information or
correspondence. Thank you for your patience and support while we await
the launch of the new website.
Project Compassion
Halima is raising her two children in a refugee camp in Bangladesh, while caring for her
mother who has a disability. Widowed at 21, Halima fled violence in Myanmar’s Rakhine
State, arriving at the camp with nothing.
Caritas Australia, through Caritas Bangladesh, helped Halima with shelter, cooking
equipment, hygiene and sanitation training. She took on the role of community trainer
herself, organising the cleaning of washrooms, wells and toilets.
Halima aspired to “Be More” and is proud that she is able to earn a small income, while
maintaining the health of her family and the cleanliness of the camp community.
• In the Cox’s Bazar district, women and children make up 78% of the total refugee
population where 52% of children are aged 0-17. (UNHCR)
Watch a short film about Halima’s story here.

Parent Reading Roster
Parent Reading Roster
Once again we would like to implement the Parent Reading Roster as it has been an amazing success in the
past few years. It really benefits the children who struggle with reading and do not always receive a lot of
home support. This assists our students to ‘catch up’ by increasing their reading mileage. Therefore, we are
seeking interested parents/caregivers/grandparents/uncles/aunties etc who can devote some of your
precious time to listen to children read. These sessions will take place either first thing in the morning
between 8.40 – 9.10 or at the end of the day between 2.30 – 3.00. If you are new to this support
programme you will be required to undergo a brief training session in the skills, strategies and processes
we encourage to foster independent, fluent readers. Once we have a bank of available helpers, rosters will
be set up for the classes on a needs base. It is imperative that confidentiality is maintained at all times. If
you are interested in assisting in this area, please complete the form below and return to the front office by
the end of term. We will be in touch in regard to the training sessions.
Kind Regards
Helen Lornie
Literacy Co-ordinator
I would like to be a parent helper for the Reading Roster Program and am willing to come to the training
session.

A Message from the Senior Leaders
We are getting really close to Easter, only 10 days left, and on Sunday we
have Palm Sunday Mass. We hope most people can come, and a reminder
that there is a half day on Monday due to the parent teacher interviews.
Well done to 5B who had their Mass this morning. Good luck to those who
are going to Reconciliation tomorrow. Senior Leaders, Melodie Gate and
Jaeda Aliphon.
Eco Warriors - Sustainability

We have started to have no bins in the

your child comes to school with waste, they

Ride2School
.
What a “bright” wonderful start to the day it was seeing many of our Good Shepherd students take part in the
National Ride2School Day last Friday. The P&F were happy to support this great event by providing a healthy
morning snack for all participating students. THANK YOU to our parent helpers!
Camp Out
Over 32 tents and swags of all colours, shapes and sizes turned our lower primary school oval into a mini
“holiday park” as more than 83 parents and kids attended the annual Family Camp Out last Saturday night -
with some beautiful mums too!
Campers of all experience levels were all united with one common goal – having fun, spending quality time
with each other and relaxing in a great informal atmosphere.
The Parents and Friends committee wish to thank all who attended in such good spirits and made the night a
great success. A HUGE THANK YOU to John Arendt and Anthony Campbell for Co-ordinating this event and
making sure everyone had a fantastic time. To the many parents who, in true “camp out” style, helped either
with cooking, serving, and cleaning up, we say THANK YOU!
We thank all our School “Camper” Families for their contributions, and we are looking forward to this
Community Event continuing to grow in 2022.
Kindy & Pre-Primary Morning Tea
It has been lovely to welcome our Kindy and Pre-Primary families and
carers to our school community this week with a “Welcome Morning
Tea”.
The Parents and Friends of Good Shepherd look forward to seeing you all
throughout the year, be it at one of our Friend or Fund-raising events or
just in the playground to say hello.
We thank you for sharing your morning with us and wish you well for the
year and your time here at Good Shepherd.
THANK YOU to our talented Year 1 teacher, Mrs Elesia Pappas, for making the delicious cupcakes too!19 March 2021 Good Shepherd Catholic School
