The $29.3m youth outdoor education and resilience facility will have the capacity to offer programmes to over 4,000 intermediate and secondary school students each year. Designs have received local and regional council resource consent and include best practice sustainability features, with an aim to achieve a net zero impact. The centre is a significant investment for Hillary Outdoors, and we need your help to achieve our goal. By offering our rangatahi the life-changing experience of learning through adventure, we are giving our future leaders the skills they need to take on a new future. YOUNG NEW ZEALANDERS ARE SPENDING MORE TIME THAN EVER ON DIGITAL DEVICES AND LESS TIME OUTDOORS AND BEING ACTIVE. New Zealand children aged 5–17 years ranked third highest out of 40 countries for being overweight. – MINISTRY OF HEALTH Only 10% of New Zealand secondary school students meet the recommended 60 minutes of daily physical activity. – ACCORDING TO THE LATEST YOUTH HEALTH SURVEY (2012) New Zealand’s youth suicide rate - teenagers between 15 and 19 - is the highest of OECD and EU countries. – 2018 UNICEF REPORT “This opportunity has changed the way I view the world, no longer seeing through a 6-inch diameter screen. I had so much fun and made the most of it while I was there. It was the most adventurous undertaking of my life so far. I felt like Bear Grylls for 5 weeks... I believe from this opportunity I can now survive in the wilderness and technology is not the most important thing in the world. HILLARY OUTDOORS LAKE TAUPŌ TO ENHANCE PROGRAMME OFFERINGS GROWING THE FUTURE OF NEW ZEALAND Each year Hillary Outdoors Lake Taupō will serve more than 4,000 additional young people in residential outdoor and environmental education. Hillary Outdoors currently provides outdoor education to more than 7,500 young people per annum, and this Centre can increase our capacity to provide outdoor education to over 11,500 young people. EMPLOYMENT PREPARATION Multiple Hillary Outdoors Tertiary-trained alumni are now creating lasting positive change for tens of thousands of children, communities, and the environment in locations all over the world. The Lake Taupō centre will enable Hillary Outdoors to expand our successful tertiary and develop employment readiness programmes. 100% of those who take part in the tertiary programme at Hillary Outdoors are placed in full time employment within 12 months of finishing. CONTINUING TO BE INNOVATORS Hillary Outdoors Lake Taupō will be the first outdoor education centre in the Southern Hemisphere constructed to meet the Living Building ChallengeTM criteria. The buildings will be constructed to have a net zero impact and a carbon minimisation philosophy. “The Centre will provide a valuable and essential service of empowering young people (across a broad geographic area of New Zealand) to be work-ready, positively focussed and engaged in prioritising their own career pathways.” – ENTERPRISE GREAT LAKE TAUPŌ 12 13
150,000+ By Hillary Outdoors’ 50th Anniversary in 2022, over 150,000 young people will have learned through adventure at Hillary Outdoors WE KNOW WHAT WORKS AND WE KNOW HOW TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE. Sir Edmund Hillary understood from his own experience the power of strengths-based learning and goal-setting. He said: “For a life to be interesting, set objectives for yourselves, and tough objectives. Things 1 MILLION that make you use every strength and skill that you possess. THE TIME IS NOW We can expand Hillary Outdoors’ ability to transform lives by opening a new Centre at Lake Taupō which will educate more students, train more Instructors, train more Tertiary and Cadet students, further partnerships through a new employment readiness programme that focuses on predominantly Maōri and Pasifika youth and reach more schools to integrate outdoor education into New Zealand’s curriculum. Life changing experiences happen weekly at Hillary Outdoors. Thousands of young people every year are immersing themselves in outdoor education and opening their minds to the natural world around them, to themselves, to their family, to their community, and to our society. This is a pivotal time for our youth, our schools, the environment, and our nation. Hillary Outdoors Lake Taupō has a big role to play. “I have always felt the importance of young people becoming familiar with the out-of-doors. It gives us challenges. It encourages us to enjoy things that are beautiful. It encourages us to preserve the environment. The out-of-doors makes kids aware of what our country has to offer.
