Other Important Information
Your LJMU email account - This must be accessed at least twice a day. You must use this email account to contact
staff at the centre.
IT Suite - The centre has a computer room available for students to support extra learning.
Canvas: LJMU’s Virtual Learning Environment - This is an online learning environment for students to access class
materials and extra resources to support independent learning. Canvas is used to submit assessments and gain
further knowledge of subjects you are taught at the centre.

1Pre-Arrival Study Materials
Who are these study materials for?
The pre-arrival study materials are for all students who will be joining International Foundation Year at Liverpool John
Moores University International Study Centre.
What are the study materials?
• The pre-arrival materials are hosted on a virtual learning platform, Study Smart
• They will introduce you to the academic language and culture of Higher Education that you may encounter at your
centre and help you prepare for the start of your studies
• They will help guide you through the key skills you will need in academic writing, reading, listening and speaking to
help you be successful in your studies, giving you practice and tips on how to improve
• The materials include an English test which you should complete before your arrival. This is a short online
assessment which will help your tutors understand your level of English so that they can better support you with
your learning when you arrive.
• They provide useful information and links about studying and living in the UK.
How to access:
You can access the materials through our online learning platform, Study Smart, by following this link:

Username: Student ID – 7 digit number which can be found at the top of your offer letter or confirmation of enrolment.
Password: Your date of birth – 8 digits in the format xx/xx/xxxx, excluding slashes (e.g. 5th of December 1990 would
be 05121990)
Please note that it can take up to 24 hours after you confirm your place for your account to become active. If you are
unable to log in or have any trouble accessing the course then please contact the

2My Induction Week
Monday 6th – Friday 10th January 2020
Welcome to your LJMU International Study Centre (ISC) Induction Schedule. Below you will find a timetable of
induction activity, which is designed to help you settle in at the centre and prepare you for your studies.
As part of the induction week:
• You will be supported to become a fully registered and enrolled student at LJMU.
• You will provide the centre with personal and contact details.
• You will learn many things about your programme of study.
• You will meet the teachers and support staff at the centre.
• You will have a welcome talk, which will include the opportunity to meet with LJMU university staff.
• You will have a programme induction, which will conclude with a Q&A (question and answer) session.
• You will have an English module induction, which will conclude with a Q&A (question and answer) session.
During your programme of study, you will also be given the opportunity to meet with LJMU teaching staff, have
departmental visits and engage in LJMU teaching activities (such as guest lectures and seminars). A library induction
will also be scheduled for all students within the first few weeks of study.
Please ensure you arrive on time for the below sessions as these are an important part of getting settled into life as a
student at LJMU ISC, and will help ensure your success for the upcoming academic year!

Liverpool Cathedral
From the very early days of its origins and starting to build just after the turn of the 20th Century,
through to its completion in 1978 after 74 long, hard, but rewarding years, the unfolding story of
this great cathedral, the largest in the whole of the UK and the fifth largest in the world, is unique
and fascinating.

7Friday 10th January

Head of Centre Welcome followed by Programme Induction
Students will be formally welcomed to Liverpool and the ISC by
Christina Roberts, Head of Centre.
Students will then be split into groups depending upon their

This is a continuation of the Programme Induction, and will further 80-98 Mount Pleasant
support your induction into your individual programme, and the L3 5UZ
1pm – 4.30pm support available at the ISC. You will also be provided with your
weekly timetable. It is important that all students attend both parts
of this session.
Under 18s Registration Session
4.30pm – 5pm Information and guidance for students who are under 18 at the
time of arrival at the ISC. All Under 18 students must attend.

Students arriving after Friday 10th January 2020
All students who arrive outside of the Welcome Week will be provided with the same level of information
during their first week at the ISC. However we would strongly encourage you to arrive during Welcome Week
so you can allow time to settle in, meet new friends and explore Liverpool before teaching begins on Monday
13th January 2020.

8What’s on in Liverpool?
The Everyman Rock ‘N’ Roll Panto Sleeping Beauty
Running until 18 January 2020. Everyman Theatre, Liverpool. Our perennial
writer/director duo of Sarah A Nixon and Mark Chatterton will return for this year’s Rock ‘n’
Roll panto Sleeping Beauty.
This may seem like a little bit of a Christmas Activity, but with three final dates on 9th, 11th
and 13th January 2020 there’s no better way to get to grips with what Liverpool has to offer
than visiting the Everyman Theatre for a performance!
Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band
Running until 9 January 2020. Dr Martin Luther King Jr Building, Royal Albert dock,
Liverpool, Merseyside, L3 4AA. Tate Liverpool and National Museums Liverpool have
collaborated with Apple Corps Ltd. to present a remixed version of The Beatles’s
pioneering Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band played in Dolby Atmos, an immersive
sound environment that feels as if the band is performing live in the space. This free event,
situated at the heart of Liverpool’s iconic Royal Albert Dock Liverpool will transport
listeners to Abbey Road this Christmas.
An Evening With Tony Bellew
12 January 2020. Liverpool Empire, Lime Street, Liverpool, L1 1JE. The evening will
include an in depth interview with Tony Bellew where he'll be talking us through his
incredible career and journey to becoming the cruiserweight champion of the world
and beyond.
The Audience will also get the chance to put their questions to Tony in our live Q&A
session. VIP ticket holders will get chance to meet the main man himself and also receive
a photo and signing opportunity.
Chinese New Year: Year of the Pig
8 – 10 February 2020. Great George Square and Nelson Street, Liverpool.
The family friendly activities will start from 11.30am and take place in and
around Great George Square and Nelson Street. The event will end at 6.45pm.
Krewe Liverpool: The Mardi Gras Experience
7 – 8 February 2020. Palm House, Sefton Park, Liverpool, L17 1AP. Join us for the
inaugural KREWE LIVERPOOL : The Mardi Gras Experience, at the Palm House, in
Sefton Park. This surreal masquerade will be Liverpool's first official Mardi Gras
celebration, with music, dance and costume the essential ingredients in this city-wide
collaborative gumbo. Live - Frog & Henry (New Orleans)

9Police Registration
Registering with the Police, what does this mean?
You may be required to register with the police upon arrival to the UK if you hold a passport from the list of
nationalities below. This will also be listed on your visa in your passport and will state that you must register with the
police within 7 days of arriving in the UK (if you applied for a visa outside the UK) or if you have been issued a new
Biometric Enrolment Permit if you applied for a new visa inside the UK. Please note that due to police staffing
issues, you may not get an appointment within 7 days. Please do not worry about this

You will need to register with the police if:
• you are 16 or older
• your visa or permission to stay in the UK is longer than 6 months
• you are a national of one of the below:

*If you’re a student who holds a passport issued by the Special Administrative Region of either Hong Kong or Macao is classed as a Chinese
national and needs to register.
How to register
You will need to take the below documents and information to the police station for your area.
• £34 for the registration fees
• 1 recent passport size colour photographs
• your passport
• your visa “vignette” (sticker in your passport), if you applied outside the UK
• the letter you got from the Home Office when your application was approved, if you applied inside the UK
• your biometric residence permit, if you have one
You will receive a police registration certificate once you have successfully registered with the police. Please present
this document to the LJMU International Study Centre Reception. Please keep it while your visa is valid. If you lose
your certificate please contact your local police station and they will tell you what to do.
If you failed to register, your visa might be at risk as it is a condition of your visa in the UK.
Failure to register in time could impact on any visa applications in the UK in future.
Updating your details
You need to inform the police if any of the information you gave to the Police has changed. (for example a new visa
granted, a passport number and/or a new contact address etc.)
