33. Osnabrück
Osnabrück, with its 160,000 inhabitants, is the third-largest
city in the federal state of Lower Saxony. More than 18,000
students enrolled at the Osnabrück universities live in the
ancient cathedral town and bishopric with its 1,200-year-old
history. The medieval town centre with its carefully restored
half-timbered houses offers a distinctive atmosphere for the
catering and art trade. Only a short walk away modern
arcades and pedestrian precincts are ideal for walks and
shopping trips.
Osnabrück is situated at the junction of important North-South and East-West connections.
Cities like Hanover, Hamburg, Amsterdam or Berlin can be reached within a few hours by
train or car. It takes only 30 minutes by car to reach the Airport Münster-Osnabrück. The
most popular means of transport in Osnabrück is the bicycle. The town, however, also offers
an excellent bus network. At weekends the night buses ensure a safe journey home even
late in the evening.
Osnabrück offers everything that makes life enjoyable: More than
400 pubs, bars and restaurants cater for all tastes and serve a
variety of meals which range from traditional to exotic and from fast
food to vegetarian. Cultural events play an important role in this
city on the river ”Hase”: Several theatres stage dramas, operas
and ballets, various museums offer changing art exhibitions and a
variety of festivals range from modern (European Media Art
Festival) to traditional (”Mai-Woche”). Very popular is the ”Lagerhalle”, an old warehouse
which now serves as a meeting place with cafeteria, bar, tearoom and a stage for live music
and theatre. The zoo and the planetarium, cinemas and sports facilities offer opportunities to
take well-earned breaks from work.

the Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes in International Business and
Management, Business Law, Nursing Science, Social Work – just to
name a few. Moreover, the library is one of the five best in Germany

Three campus locations
Westerberg campus
Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences (OS UAS) has several bigger or smaller
campuses in the city of Osnabrück, and a branch campus in the city of Lingen. The main
campus, called "Westerberg", is situated in one of the most beautiful parts of Osnabrück:
Though in walking distance to the inner city, the university grounds are located right next to
the Botanical Gardens, and a recreational area with woods and lakes lies in the immediate
vicinity. The Westerberg campus is home both to the Faculty of Business Management and
Social Sciences and the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science. Other faculties are
for example located in a former gambling casino or in former military barracks.
Haste campus
The campus of the Faculty of Agriculture and Landscape Architecture, called "Haste", is
located on the Northern edge of Osnabrück (in the suburb of “Haste”), and is just as
beautiful: The lecture venues and seminar rooms, the laboratories and green houses are
situated in a large park of approx. 5 ha. The campus is completed by two experimental
farms. A 10 minute bus ride will take you from the city centre to the main campus and you
will need 20 minutes to get from downtown Osnabrück to our campus in Haste.
6Lingen campus
The city of Lingen is approx. 70 km West of Osnabrück and very close to the Dutch border.
In 2012, most institutes moved into the new campus building which is architecturally unique:
Several houses were built into an old industrial hall that had once been used to repair trains.
In each house, there are classrooms, offices, and learning facilities – all under one roof and
in the centre of this city with approx.. 56,000 inhabitants.
5. Arrangements prior to your departure
Before leaving your country, we would advise you to make the following preparations:
• Please make sure that you have personal liability insurance and health insurance
cover. Please inform yourself in detail at your health insurance company about the latest
regulations regarding your insurance cover abroad.
• Lecturers from NON-EU countries might require a visa
and should therefore apply in due time to the German
embassy or consulate in their home country to inform
themselves about the latest regulations. The staff of the
German embassy or consulate can provide further information:
http://www.auswaertiges-amt.de/diplo/de/Startseite.html. If an
invitation letter from Hochschule Osnabrück is requested,
please contact the IFO to issue a respective certification –
should you be accompanied by your spouse or another family
member, please inform us accordingly and we will make out an
additional invitation letter for her/his visa as well.
• On request, lecturers from EU countries can also obtain an invitation letter, if for
instance required for their home universities. Just send us an e-mail and inform us what
you need to be certified in detail.
• If you want us to book accommodation for you or to pick you up from the airport or
train station, please let us know when you will arrive and how long you plan to stay in
Osnabrück.
In case you intend to drive a car during your stay in Germany, you should bring the following
documents with you:
• An international driving license or foreign national driving licence
• An international "green" insurance card confirming third-party insurance coverage in
Germany (if you plan to bring your car to Germany)
• A no-claims certificate from your automobile insurance company (this will qualify you for a
rebate if you intend to take out a third-party car insurance in Germany).
6. Orientation at Hochschule Osnabrück
Once you have arrived at Hochschule Osnabrück, we will help you orient yourself quickly on
the university grounds. If you have special wishes, please let us know so that we can
respond to your needs in an adequate way. We will provide you with some information
material in a HS portfolio, including your syllabus and other important items, and show you
round the Campus Westerberg, the Faculty of Business Management and Social Sciences
and the city of Osnabrück. You will be familiarised with the technology of the lecture rooms,
the facilities (computers, copiers, etc.) and the library.
7We also have arranged an office, an extra e-mail address and various ID codes for you to
ease your work at HS Osnabrück. You will receive a transponder which actually is a key for
your office and the lecture rooms. Furthermore we will support long-term guest lecturers
with the registration formalities (inauguration, adjuration, remuneration for guest lectureship)
in our administration department.
7. Initial formalities for long-term guest lecturers
If you need help with the initial formalities, the staff of the IFO will support you. The following
order is suggested:
7.1 Opening an account
Long-term guest lecturers are advised to open an account upon
their arrival in Osnabrück to settle the monthly payments (e. g.
rent, telephone, etc.). You are free to choose one of the local
banks. However, we would like to mention that international
institutions like Deutsche Bank or Commerzbank tend to have
less vending machines than local institutions like Sparkasse or
Volksbank. In order to open an account you will need your
identity card or passport, your residence permit as well as the
invitation letter from Hochschule Osnabrück.
7.2 Registration at the authorities
Guest lecturers who will be holding a guest lectureship at Hochschule Osnabrück for one or
several semesters will have to register at the Foreigners‘ Registration Office
("Ausländerbehörde”) during their first week in Osnabrück. Lecturers coming from a non-EU
country also have to apply for a residence permit. For this purpose the following papers are
required:
EU residents
• valid passport or identity card
• invitation letter from Hochschule Osnabrück
Fees do not incur.
Non-EU residents
• valid passport or identity card
• 1 passport photograph
• invitation letter from Hochschule Osnabrück
• evidence of health insurance
• remuneration statement (certification from Hochschule Osnabrück or from home
university)
Fees for the required documents
For the first residence permit (stay for up to one year): EUR 50.00
For the first residence permit (stay for more than one year): EUR 60.00
Extensions: EUR 30.00

9.7 Computer facilities
The faculty has arranged an office for guest lecturers on the third floor of the CN building:
room CN 0309f. The room contains a PC and a container with some office material for your
personal use. An extra laptop can also be provided by the staff of the IFO. It might however
be used by several guests at the same time, especially during the block seminar weeks, but
it should suffice to check your e-mails or do some smaller, short-term works. If you want to
do some larger or preparatory works for your lectures, we would recommend to bring your
own laptop, if possible.
If you bring your own laptop and want to use WLAN, your laptop must have a WLAN
programme. You will also need a connecting cable. This and further information about WLAN
can be provided by the IT staff of our faculty or be found in the portal "My FH Osnabrück" or
on the Intranet "Fakultät-Intern"/W-LAN: http://www.wiso.hs-osnabrueck.de/18664.html
(information there is however given in German only).
You have WLAN access in the buildings and rooms:

The CN building also has several electronic classrooms (CN 0104 - 0106), an Internet
café (CN 0109) and media laboratories (CN 0107 - 0108) on the first floor which are mainly
used by students for self-learning purposes outside lecture times.
All classrooms are fully equipped with the latest multimedia technology (e. g. beamers,
data projectors, microphones, cameras for recording lectures, media containers with
notebooks) enabling you to use teaching aids such as memory sticks with your files, CD-
ROM, DVD for Powerpoint presentations, etc. Moreover, there are some video units with TV
sets on roll carts, not in every classroom, but on the corridors.
Copiers in the CN building are available in the rooms CN 0316 (colour copier, also contains
a printer), CN 0232 and CN 0029. You will get ID codes for the copiers on arrival together
with further information material in a HS portfolio. Should you be in need of a scanner,
please ask the IT staff, Mr. Dominik Bartsch or Mr. Frank Huckriede, for assistance.

10. General information on academic studies
10.1 Academic year
The academic year starts on September 1st and ends on August 31st. It is divided into a
winter and a summer semester. Usually no classes are held during the weekend.
Winter semester
September 1st to February 28th
Classes start in the middle of September and end in the middle of
January
Examination period: mid-January until the beginning of February
Summer semester
March 1st to August 31st
Classes start at the beginning of March and end in the middle of
June
Examination period: mid-June until the beginning of July
For the current semester schedules please see:
http://www.wiso.hs-osnabrueck.de/termine.html.
10.2 Study programmes and areas
Bachelor and Master programmes
In winter semester 2005/2006, the Faculty of Business Management and Social Sciences
converted the previous study programmes into Bachelor and Master programmes. An
overview of the new courses can be gathered from the website: http://www.wiso.hs-
osnabrueck.de/study-programmes.html. If you also want to have an insight into the study
opportunities of the other faculties of Hochschule Osnabrück, please feel free to have a
look at the following webpage: http://www.hs-osnabrueck.de/3330.html.
13Study areas
Our faculty offers courses within the following study areas:
• Controlling • Nursing Science
• Finances • Quantitative Methods
• Logistics • Law of Financial Services
• Business Management • Social Sciences
• Marketing • Taxes and Auditing
• Public Management • Event Management
• Communication • Economics
• Human Resources • Business Languages
If you are interested in holding a guest lectureship in one of the above areas, the IFO will
help you establish contact to the responsible lecturers to clarify the details of a possible
teaching activity. International lecturers can contribute to our lectures for the period of one or
several semesters or on the occasion of our block seminar weeks in May and November
(one week in the second week of the respective month, without regular lectures, but with
projects, business games, study trips).
10.3 Block seminars
This special type of class is offered once every semester (in May and November) by
members of the faculty staff and German and international guest lecturers. During this time
no regular lectures are given. For five days, from Monday to Friday, our students have the
opportunity to join a study trip, a project or a business game. These classes are held full-
time, i. e. from 9 a. m. to 4.30 p. m. with about one hour lunch break, and are primarily
courses given in German, English, Spanish or French for mostly undergraduate students.
The students in general have to take two of these block week courses during their entire
studies. They can choose between a wide range of topics. The students are expected to
attend the seminars regularly and, depending on the lecturer, they can be committed to
contribute actively (by giving a presentation or the like). There is however no final
examination and the courses will not be graded. The group size can vary from 10 to 25
persons.
Our postgraduate students are generally not obliged to do any of the above seminars, but
some special modules from the curricula of our Master programmes, such as "Business
Ethics", might be offered in one block at the time of our block weeks. International guest
lecturers are of course also invited to contribute to these postgraduate classes.
Guest lecturers will be requested to specify the contents of the seminar they intend to
hold in a special form which will be e-mailed to them. The details will be clarified with the
lecturers of the respective study area and the IFO. About two weeks before the block week
begins, the guest lecturers will receive the list of participants by e-mail. An attendance list
has to be kept to ascertain if the students have actually taken part in the seminar and an
evaluation questionnaire has to be completed by the students at the end. List and
questionnaire will be provided by and have to be returned to the coordinator of the block
week seminars:

1410.4 Regular lectures
All classes take the form of lectures, seminars and exercises. Due to relatively small
groups there is almost always the opportunity for discussing the material presented. One
lecture lasts for 90 minutes (= 2 contact hours/week). Between lectures there is a break of
usually 30 minutes and a lunch break of 45 minutes. Classes take place from Monday to
Friday as follows:
1st lesson 08.00 - 09.30
2nd lesson 10.00 - 11.30
3rd lesson 12.00 - 13.30
4th lesson 14.15 - 15.45
5th lesson 16.15 - 17.45
6th lesson 18.15 - 19.45
We will arrange the timetable for your lecture (i. e. booking of dates and rooms) which will be
e-mailed or handed out to you on arrival.
Cancellation of lectures
If your lectures have to be cancelled for any reasons, please send an e-mail to Mrs. Ute
Samson of the Dean's Office: samson@wi.hs-osnabrueck.de. She will make sure that the
students get a notification on the Internet.
10.5 Consultation hours of long-term guest lecturers
We would advise you to fix consultation hours so that the students can reach you in your
office in case they need to discuss certain issues regarding your lecture with you. Please
display these times at your office door and also communicate them to Mrs. Ute Samson of
the Dean's Office (room CN 0205, e-mail address see above) so that she can include them in
the list on the Internet.
10.6 Examinations
Examinations at the Faculty of Business Management and Social Sciences are held from
mid-January until the beginning of February (winter term) and from mid-June until the
beginning of July (summer term). In general these are graded subject examinations or
ungraded courseworks (students can only achieve pass or fail). Detailed information on the
examinations and the examination regulations are available on the Internet:
http://www.wiso.hs-osnabrueck.de/pruefungen.html (in German) and http://www.wiso.hs-
osnabrueck.de/guestlecturers.html (in English).
Long-term guest lecturers have to prepare examination questions for
the lecture they have given. The examination papers shall contain a
cover sheet (an example can be found on the above website),
the questions and some blank sheets of paper for the answers. Ready-
made examination papers can be obtained from Mr. Christian
Buddecke in room CN 0035. The examination schedule will be
posted on the Internet: http://www.wiso.hs-osnabrueck.de/
pruefungsplan.html. On the day the examination is held, an
attendance list has to be signed by the students to ascertain if all the
students who registered for the examination have appeared. This list
will be provided by the Student Affairs Office of Hochschule Osnabrück
prior to the examination period and has to be returned to them, or
alternatively to the IFO, in any case, i. e. also even if none of the
candidates listed appeared and thus the examination was cancelled.
15The students apply online for the examinations through the portal "My FH Osnabrück"
(deadlines: for the winter term: end of November, for the summer term: end of April). Once
the lecturers have corrected the examinations papers, they have to communicate the
examination results to the Student Affairs Office latest by the end of the semester (winter
term: August, summer term: February), so that they can be posted on the portal in the
students' transcripts of records:

2015.2 Food
Supermarkets
Supermarkets offer a large range of products for reasonable prices. Each city district has a
supermarket. When shopping, you should make a habit of looking at the various items and
comparing prices. They often have special offers. You can buy particularly reasonably-priced
food in the discount markets. They neither offer a large range of products nor brand names
but the quality is nevertheless good.
Supermarkets do not generally accept credit cards but most of them Eurocheque Cards
(electronic cash). The least expensive supermarkets in Osnabrück usually are ALDI, NETTO
and LIDL.
Weekly markets
Do you really like and value fresh fruit and vegetables?
Then you will find everything to suit your taste at the
weekly markets. In most cases, farmers set up their stalls
in the town centre on the market square or a car park.
They sell farm produce from the region, as well as
imported goods, such as exotic fruits. Markets are held
on one or several days a week. In Osnabrück the biggest
weekly market takes place each Saturday morning in
front of the cathedral. There is also a new weekly market
on Tuesday afternoons at Johanniskirche.
International shops
Perhaps you are planning to cook a specialty from your home country and cannot find
everything you need in the supermarket. A wealth of international food shops stock imported
goods from all parts of the world. A Turkish vegetable grocer who also offers numerous
oriental products will be found in every German city. In addition, you can find Asia shops with
special fish products and spices or African shops in which you can buy manioc, for example.
Natural food shops
Shops which sell particularly healthy foods and a number of other
products go by the name of "Bioladen", "Grüner Laden", "Öko-
Geschäft" or "Reformhaus" in Germany. That means that the fruits
and vegetables from these bio shops were produced without
pesticides and are not genetically modified. All bread and cake
products were made with wholemeal flour. The meat and eggs
come from farms where the animals are kept in a way appropriate
to the species, which means that e.g. the chickens were not kept in
coops or cages, but all this comes at a price. Cheaper bio goods
can now also be found in some supermarkets. You can recognise
these products by a green, octagonal bio seal awarded in
accordance with the EEC Council Regulation on Organic
Agricultural Produce.
Opening times
Germany has a shop closing act which precisely governs when goods may be offered. These
regulations may vary in the different federal states of Germany though. In principle, most
21shops have to remain closed Monday to Friday from 20.00 in the evening until 6.00 the next
morning. On Saturdays, shops generally are not allowed to sell anything after 20.00.
In April 2007, the act has been revised inter alia for the federal state Lower Saxony, to which
Osnabrück belongs, so that goods may now be sold without time restriction from 0.00 to
24.00 from Monday to Saturday. Special regulations exist for Sundays and public holidays.
Mondays to Saturdays
Nevertheless, shop opening hours are different at different places. In large cities, shops can
open between 6.00 and 10.00 in the morning during the week and close between 16.00 and
24.00. In the country or in more remote parts of the towns, shops might already close earlier.
Shops in small towns can be expected to close at lunch time, from around 12.00 to 15.00.
Weekends
On four special Sundays all shops are allowed to open now for five hours, except on some
public holidays, e. g. Easter and Christmas. In principle however, towns and cities might look
quite empty on Sundays and public holidays. Everything is closed, although bakeries and
confectioners may sell their bread and cakes for a few hours, while florists can sell their
flowers. So what do you do when you urgently need something? Petrol stations, railway
kiosks or shops at airports and ferry ports as well as snack bars are the only places that will
be able to help out. You can buy food, drinks, small items and newspapers outside of normal
opening hours, although at an excessively high price.
15.3 How to pay
Cash/traveller's cheques
You pay for your bread rolls from the baker or the magazine from the kiosk in cash, although
"plastic money" is increasingly being accepted. You can change the cash from your home
country into Euros around the clock at some machines, mostly to be found in the main
branches of the banks. You can also go to the bank counters to do this, of course, and you
can also cash in traveller's checks there, but only at the official opening times. In major
tourist centres, you will also find exchange counters where you can cash in cheques or
change money.
Electronic cash (EC/Maestro) with Eurocheque cards
If you come from a country which itself issues Eurocheque cards (not
to be confused with the "Eurocard" credit card), then you should
make sure you obtain such a card. You can use it to pay by card
easily and almost everywhere. Just look for the EC/Maestro sign on
the cash register. Then you can pay by card and signature or with
your PIN and the sum is immediately debited from your account. A
large number of cash dispensers/ATMs are also available where you
can use your Eurocheque card to draw out Euro. However, you will often be charged foreign
fees for using this service, if you use your card from home.
Credit cards
Of course, you can pay larger sums worldwide with all well-known credit cards. The door of
the shop in question will have a sticker showing which credit cards are accepted. You can
also draw cash with your credit card from cash dispensers/ATMs, if you have a PIN. But you
will have to pay high charges for this service.
