In 2018, the MS Society released evidence-based
recommendations for vitamin D supplementation
and maintenance of vitamin D serum levels,
addressing a key need of the MS community for
information on vitamin D intake and MS.
“According to multiple studies, vitamin D deficiency is a risk
factor for MS,” says Dr. Ruth Ann Marrie, Director, MS Clinic,
Winnipeg Health Sciences Centre and a member of the
Vitamin D and MS Panel who worked on the recommendations.
They provide optimal dosing ranges for people with or at risk for
MS, and information about comorbid conditions, sun exposure,
vitamin D supplements, and food sources.

“Having these recommendations available to someone like
myself, who may be at risk of the disease, gives me hope,”
says Marie-Ève Simard, whose mother lives with MS.

Team captain’s corner

“The first MS Bike tour that I did was in 2001,” says Woop de Woo Team Captain Kevin James, whose wife Darcie
lives with MS. “It wasn’t about riding as long as you can or as fast as you can. It’s about the cause, the event,
seeing and meeting people. It’s about getting the community together to raise funds for MS. Since then [our team]
has grown.”

“Finding a cure for MS would be incredible for so many people,” Kevin explains. “I firmly believe that in our lifetime,
there will be a cure for MS.”
