Hertie School of Governance
The Hertie School of Governance prepares exceptional
students for leadership positions in government,
business, and civil society. Through its PhD Programmes
young researchers are equipped to work at the cut-
ting edge of governance and public policy. Experienced
professionals also have the opportunity to deepen their
skills in the field of public management and public
policy through a range of Executive Education offers.
A renowned faculty with expertise in political and
social science, economics and law take an interdisciplin-

and research agenda. Students from over 95 nations
and a global network of academic partners position the
Hertie School as an international centre in the heart of
Berlin that actively engages in public debate with its
wide range of events bringing together experts from
theory and practice. We warmly invite you to read more
about the Hertie School and hope to welcome you on
our campus in the near future.
Henrik Enderlein, Axel Baisch,
President Managing DirectorDegrees and programmes The two-year Master of Public Policy (MPP) pro- gramme is geared towards students with a Bachelor degree who wish to expand their knowledge in the fields of global or European governance, economic policy, social policy, public management, and demo- cratic governance. The two-year Master of International Affairs (MIA) programme focuses on international relations and prepares candidates for positions requiring a profound understanding of today’s governance challenges in a global multilevel system. The MPP and MIA programmes include an internship and the opportunity to do a “professional year”. Students can also spend a semester abroad or complete dual degrees at one of the School’s partner institutions. The Hertie School offers the Doctoral Programme in Governance, a three-year structured doctoral pro- gramme with a focus on governance and public policy; and contributes to the Berlin Graduate School for Transnational Studies (BTS). Various options are offered for professionals: The Executive Master of Public Administration (EMPA) is for experienced professionals from the private, public, and non-profit sector, who wish to develop their management and leadership skills. By completing an 4
Executive Training, professionals can expand their
management competence in a specific area.
Executive MPA participants benefit from several
exchange programmes with partner universities as
well as very flexible structures.
The Hertie School also offers tailor-made solutions
to companies and organisations in the public, private,
and civil s ociety sectors.
The Hertie School’s degree programmes and executive
training formats are taught in English.

The Hertie School is a platform for vibrant public
debate and engaged intellectual discourse among
academic experts and policy-makers.
By engaging in public debate, the Hertie School
plays a vital role as an ambassador of good gover-
nance. Regular lectures, conferences, and discussions
are complemented by joint events with the school’s
partner institutions.
The Hertie School’s faculty members are constantly
leading studies and research projects that tackle key
governance challenges in Germany, Europe and fur-
ther afield. Their findings are widely discussed in the
media, and leaders from the public, private and civil
society sectors draw on their expertise. In addition
to the annual Governance Report, the Hertie School
releases publications and studies on an ongoing basis.
In the Debate section on our website, faculty and
researchers discuss key issues of public interest. Read
