Principal’s Message
Welcome back to all learners, parents and whaanau and a very special welcome to our newest arrivals. It
certainly is great to have you joining the Horotiu family. Term 4 has already started with a hiss and a roar
and it looks as though we have lots of great learning and activities to get stuck into in the days and weeks
to come. Some of this week’s highlights have included; Project Energize workshops, Ag Day, Police (PCT)
training for our school reps and the launch of our new inquiry theme ‘awe and wonder.’ We also had
National Shakedown earthquake drill and have a powhiri for new families tomorrow!

Scooter Track Opening
Our sincere thanks and gratitude go out to all the community groups, families, businesses and staff
members who have assisted us in the development of our Horotiu School Scooter track. This has been a
massive project and one we originally thought would take 2-3 years to accomplish. We are delighted to
announce that the track will be formally opened and blessed on Tuesday the 23nd of October at 8am. This
will involve a short ceremony, ribbon cutting, a quick acknowledgement of those who have assisted in
making this development possible and a short morning tea. (Please note that no children are allowed on
the track until after the blessing. This will give the grass seed and plants time to settle.)

We then hope to open the track up to each of our learning communities for 45-minute trials throughout the
day. This will allow classes to go out in small groups during class time for a very special play. From this
time onward, each learning community will then be assigned a day, with Fridays being awarded to the hub
who contributes the most to the school environment.

                                                                                                               1
HOROTIU SCHOOL TE KURA O HOROTIU
To keep our students safe, it is vital that they all wear helmets and preferably footwear while on the track.
No bikes will be permitted on the track at any time. Students who fail to follow these simple rules and care
for the track will lose access to the track.

Finally, a special mention must go to Heather, Ben, Megan and Dave for organising the working bee on
Saturday and to our magnificent group of workers. This was a phenomenal success and as you can see
from the photo above, the track looks superb.

Scooter Track Sponsors: GT Civil, Fulton Hogan, Pulse Engineering, Mills Contracting, Ground Care
(Hydro seeding), Kiwi Timber, Garden Flair, Oderings and the Horotiu BOT.

Agriculture -Lamb and Kid Day
The 2018 Horotiu Lamb and Kid Day was a lovely small event which gave a group of our students the
chance to showcase their animals and hard work. Each was judged on most obvious pet, leading and
rearing. We have to congratulate all students who entered and do appreciate the families who still
committed to the day, despite fears around Mycoplasma Bovis. It is truly our hope that the Ministry of
Agriculture get on top of this and we get back to a time where we can get calves and other farm animals to
school, without fears for their well-being.
A special mention goes to Helen Sorenson for organising this year’s event, Craig Landon for judging, Helen
from the Waikato District Council Animal Control for stewarding and to Keith for assisting with the set up.
We also offer a huge and heartfelt thank you to Kirsty Sanson who has organised Ag Day for our school for
many years, with this year being her last. Thank you Kirsty – you have done an amazing job!
Congratulations to our winners who will be announced in the near future.

A Big End to Term 3
In the last week of Term 3 Horotiu School decided to go all out and end on a high. Some of the key events
included; the Book Fair, our PB4L rewards day, the first ever Trolley Derby and our massive Grand Parents
Day. Our thanks really have to go to the Kotahi Seniors for organising the Trolley Derby as part of their
inquiry and to all the performers in Kapa Haka, our Cultural Group and the junior singers. This is certainly
something we would love to do again. Great organisation, commentating, organisation, marketing and
catering from our Year 7&8s.

Grandparents’ Celebration Days
Horotiu School Hall was once again packed to capacity and beyond for our very special grandparents’ day.
This enormous group of guests were treated to performances from our elite Kapa Haka, our Cultural Group,
the JLC and even our staff! We then wrapped up with a shared meal including Kiwiana food which was
either donated, or baked as part of our Kiwi Can Do inquiry. A massive shout out must go out to Mrs Kim
Crook who did an amazing job of organising this very special week. Congratulations to winner of ‘guess the
number of jaffas in the jar’, Kaycey-Leigh from the JLC.

We also do need to acknowledge all the families, whanau and special guests who travelled from afar to
support us and add to the event. Definitely a warm feeling and lots of laughter throughout.

Book Week: We genuinely appreciated all the book purchases that were completed over the week. As you
know our school gets credits from these purchases which we then use to increase the number of books in
our school. We sold over $4000 worth of books which gave our school $1500 worth of new books. Thank
you to the parents who helped set up the book fair, helped serve tea/coffee and clean up on Grandparents
day, and to those people who helped pack up book fair. Thank you to all the children who helped out in so
many ways also. This week would not be possible without your generous support. Once again, we have
shown that we' Strive together for success'.

Horotiu School ‘Family Favourites’ Recipe Book- Send us your favourites!
As you will be aware, we are always on the look-out for great fundraising ideas and ways to engage our
families and community. One of the initiatives that we are working on at present is a Horotiu School
‘Family Favourites’ Recipe Book. Our aim is to gather favourite recipes from families across our school and
collate them into a book that could make an awesome present or go-to cooking book on your shelf. This
initiative is a general school fundraiser (ie not tagged for events such as camp). The cost will be
determined once we know the number of recipes included and how the book may look and be published.

Recipes can be family favourites, passed down from generation to generation or may just be a favourite in
your household. We have set up an email address to send in your contribution and we welcome any
recipes you wish to share. This is recipes@horotiu.school.nz. We would love to include a recipe from as
many of our families as possible and if possible one for each child.

Ideally, we would like these to be in digital format (ie typed up) with:
    Recipe Title
    Ingredients
    Method
 Name of student and/or family
 Photo of the finished product (optional)

Please note the document must an editable format (ie Word, Google Doc etc). We may change the font or
layout to ensure consistency throughout the book, and to maximise our layout choices. In the event that it is
not possible for you to send them digitally, we still want to include them, so send them in on paper and we’ll
do the rest. Once recipes are collated, our students will proofread and arrange them into the book, and
make them available for sale - hopefully in time for Christmas.

We are excited about this project and look forward to receiving your favourite recipes (with or without the
secret ingredient included). Any questions, please feel free to ask or drop us a line. Ngaa mihi Patsy
Keoghan and Karen Purdy

KAPA HAKA FESTIVAL- Here we go again!
On the 25th of October Horotiu School have been invited to participate in the WFPSA Kapa Haka Festival.
This is a new initiative for Horotiu School and we are hopeful that our Elite team can again rise to the
occasion. If last term’s efforts are anything to go by, they should be stunning. Good luck team, we know
you will do us proud.

Year 7&8 Camp Reminder:
Student and Supervisor Forms (Medical/Risk Disclosure/Student Contract) have been forwarded to Kotahi
student gmail accounts. Please ask your child to access and open their accounts via Google and look for
the link in their emails. These are due in asap.

We are off to camp on Tuesday 30 October and will return on Friday 2nd November. All fees (camp,
stationery, bus, Manual fees) must be paid in full prior to camp. We are excited about our camp and are
looking forward to a wonderful opportunity to learn outside the classroom.

                                                                                                              4

House Colours and Tug-of-War Challenge:

On Friday afternoon 19th October at 1.30pm, we will be running a Tug-of-War House Challenge. This is for
the whole school. We encourage all students to get behind their houses and wear their house colours to
show their support for their team. There is also a Poowhiri that morning so students may need to change
from their poowhiri clothing into house colours later at morning tea.

The Tug-of-War Challenge will include competitions for each Hub and we aim to get all students through if
they wish to compete. We look forward to a great challenge and fun experience for all whilst earning
valuable house points.

Thank you, House Leaders

HOROTIU HEALTH CURRICULUM CONSULTATION - LAST CHANCE TO SEND US YOUR
FEEDBACK OR IDEAS

Dear Parents/Caregivers

At least once every two years the Board of Trustees is required to consult with the parent
community about the school's Health and Physical Education programmes. The purpose of this
consultation is to outline the programmes that we are delivering, and for us to hear your views
about what is important in this area.

Opportunity to comment on our provision and programmes in these areas is provided and we
welcome your feedback as this allows us to develop policies and practices that reflect the needs of
students at our school

                                                                                                            5
HOROTIU SCHOOL TE KURA O HOROTIU
Our Current Health Education Goals for Horotiu School:
 To develop understanding of the factors that influence the health of individuals, groups, and society:
lifestyle, economic, social, cultural, political, and environmental factors.
 To develop competencies for mental wellness, reproductive health and positive sexuality, and safety
management, and develop understandings of nutritional needs.
 To build resilience through strengthening personal identity and sense of self-worth, through managing
change and loss, and through engaging in processes for responsible decision-making.
 Learn to demonstrate empathy, and develop skills that enhance relationships.

Four concepts underpin our approach:
 Hauora – taha wairua, taha tinana, taha whānau
 Attitudes and Values
 Socio ecological perspective
 Health promotion
We encourage Horotiu students to take responsibility for themselves by accepting challenges in health and
movement contexts and contribute to the wellbeing of those around them. Opportunities are also provided
for them to contribute to the wellbeing of others in our community and our environment.
At present, we offer a biannual programme that includes:
