AGPS Recognized as A National Unified Champion School!!!!

                          1 Unbelievable Day - 2 Amazing Events
On April 28th, Ashland-Greenwood Public Schools along with the
community celebrated our commitment to inclusion by being
recognized by Nebraska Special Olympics as being a National
Unified Champion School. Ashland-Greenwood is one of the smallest
schools in the state to receive this honor! In addition, AGPS was
selected by ESPN as a Unified Honor Roll School.

The day began with AGPS athletes and their unified partners being
recognized in a parade down town. Parents and community
members lined the streets to celebrate this awesome team! The
parade also went by the elementary playground where elementary
students showed their support with signs and loud cheering!

The parade was followed by the athletes being welcomed to the high
school track by their classmates (armed with fun Special Olympics
noise makers), the band, and the spirit squad. The national banner
was revealed. Spectators were treated to an inspirational speech
from former Husker, DeMoine Adams, and a representative from
Nebraska Special Olympics as well as our very own ELE Assistant
Principal, Megan Poell, who represented Calvin's Legacy Foundation.

And then to add to an already exciting day, Ashland-Greenwood
hosted a Unified Track Meet. Over 200 athletes representing 11
                          neighboring school districts participated!

Ashland-Greenwood Public Schools is so very fortunate to be
surrounded by students and a community who also recognize the
value of inclusion. This award as well as the ability to host such

Ashland-Greenwood Public Schools Honor the School Lunch Heroes Serving Healthy Meals

Celebrating School Lunch Hero Day on May 7, 2021!

Between preparing healthy food, adhering to strict nutrition standards, navigating student food
allergies, and offering service with a smile, Ashland-Greenwood Public Schools nutrition professionals
have a lot on their plate. To celebrate their hard work and commitment, Ashland-Greenwood Public
schools will celebrate School Lunch Hero Day on May 7. This day, celebrated annually since 2013, was
designated by The School Nutrition Association and Jarrett Krosoczka, author of the “Lunch Lady”
graphic novel series. School Lunch Hero Day provides an opportunity for parents, students, school
staff and communities to thank those who provide healthy meals to nearly 30 million of America’s
students each school day.
“School nutrition employees must balance many roles and follow numerous federal, state and local
regulations to ensure safe and healthy meals are available in schools. School Lunch Hero Day provides
the opportunity for the community to thank these hardworking heroes” said Karee Nielsen, AGPS Food
Service Manager. Federal nutrition standards ensure that school cafeterias always offer low-fat or fat-
free milk, fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean protein. School meals also meet limits on calories,
sodium and unhealthy fats.
The importance and nutritional value of school meals are well documented. For many children, school
lunch is the most important and nutrient-rich meal of their day. As of April 22nd, 2021, AGPS has
served 16,839 Breakfast and 99,577 Lunch meals. Each day the 5 components-dairy, fruits,
vegetables, whole grains and lean protein-of a healthy meal are offered to ensure a balanced meal for
our students.

Get the details about School Lunch Hero Day at www.schoollunchheroday.com.

The School Nutrition Association (SNA) is a national, non-profit professional organization
representing more than 55,000 school nutrition professionals across the country. Founded in 1946,
SNA and its members are dedicated to making healthy school meals and nutrition education available
to all students. To find out more about today’s school meals, visit
