KINNESTON OWNER’S DAY 2019 – WELCOME

Welcome to Kinneston and thank you for taking the time to look at this booklet about the
team we have here for the 2019/20 National Hunt Season.

We were lucky last season; we sent out 30 winners from our 226 runners, 52% of those
runners finished in the first four, prize money doubled to over £300k. We had three “black
type” performers and aside from our usual haunts visited the winners enclosure at Aintree,
Cheltenham and Newbury. Our form in black type races read 11333P and over the last two
seasons our form in “ITV races” reads 131P21135513334P so I would like to think that we are
punching above our weight.

The “P” at the end of both those statistics relates to the Grand National, they say every Trainer
needs a good horse and despite that “P” I feel that we have been blessed to train as talented a
horse as Lake View Lad, he is now officially the best horse in Scotland and we will do our very
best to nurture him so that he can continue to fly the flag for the yard.

I am acutely aware that pride comes before a fall and never more so than in racing where
banana skins lurk around every corner, I fully recognise the part that fate and luck play in our
fortunes. Our metier is to focus intensely on the detail of managing every horse every day in
order to do our utmost to bring out the best in every individual. Our owners have belief and
confidence in the team here and back that with their investment, I never take that for granted
and feel deeply responsible to ensure that whatever the fates throw at us we will have done
our best.

I have been thrilled and flattered by the support we have received this summer in building
the team of horses. We have fifteen new horses and with five unraced youngsters from last
season we go forward with a rejuvenated team that smacks of quality; patience should bring
it’s rewards.

We have continued to upgrade the facilities; aside from the planned 12 horse barn we have
upgraded the gallops, installed a new seven horse walker, a watering system for the school
and a unique multi-purpose horse “dip.” Proactive management of all the facilities is key to
progress.

We go into the new season with a largely unchanged team of staff that continue to impress
me every day with their ambition, skill and commitment. In 2018 they won the Lycetts Team
Champion Award and it was fitting that this year Catch won the Godolphin Stable Staff
Leadership Award and the Employee of the Year Award. For a yard on the side of a hill in
Scotland to win two such prestigious awards is genuinely humbling.

So, three teams; a fantastic team of horses with a great team of staff and a wonderful team of
owners. It all starts with the latter and I remain extremely grateful for your investment and
support.

HANDICAP CHASERS

               CALIVIGNY (IRE)
2009 Bay Gelding by Gold Well ex Summer Holiday (IRE) (Kambalda) - Rating 105c
               Owner: Kit Alexander
Calivigny finally lost his novice tag over fences when landing the
valuable final of the Northern Lights Middle Distance Chase Series
at Carlisle in a thrilling finish, staying on strongly having looked
well beaten at the bottom of the hill, he then followed up with a
win over 3m2f at Kelso. This versatile horse is now approaching the
veteran stage but should continue to be competitive.

               CLAN LEGEND
2010 Chesnut Gelding by Midnight Legend ex Harrietfield (Nicholas Bill) - Rating 126c
               Owner: Clan Gathering
The ninth and final foal of the yard matriarch Harrietfield, 8-time
winner Clan Legend was unlucky never to get his favoured
bottomless ground last winter and was lightly raced as a result.
A tough, genuine horse he still ran with credit and looks well
handicapped when returning to preferred conditions.

               CRAIGANBOY (IRE)
2009 Bay Gelding by Zagreb (USA) ex Barnish River (IRE) (Riverhead (USA) – Rating 109c 116h
               Owner: Quandt, Cochrane, Lysaght
Craiganboy had a consistent season improving for the step up
in trip to win a 3m novice hurdle at Ayr stylishly at the end of
November. He needs the race run to suit and is a bit unusual but
has matured nicely over the last couple of years. Unlucky to fall at
Newcastle in March, he is generally a good jumper and should be
able to take advantage of his lower chase mark on soft ground this
               winter.

               FLY RORY FLY (IRE)
2012 Bay Gelding by Milan ex Thousand Wings (GER) (Winged Love (USA)) – Rating 110c

Owner: Turcan, Douglas-Miller, Stewart, Burnham, Dunning
This good looking son of Milan was never out of the winners
enclosure in 6 runs last season, battling well to win his first chase at
Kelso in March. His jumping can sometimes let him down but we
hope by ironing out a few issues this might improve, in which case
he should have plenty more to offer.

HANDICAP CHASERS

                                             JOLIE CRICKETTE (FR)
2012 Bay Mare by Laverock (IRE) ex Crickette River (FR) (Cricket Ball (USA)) Rating - 89h
                                         Owner: Mrs Jacqueline Morris
A multiple chase winner in France and over hurdles in the UK, she
was going well at home last September before picking up an injury
that side-lined her for the season. She has had plenty of time to
recover so providing she stays sound should have every chance off
a low mark when making her belated debut over UK fences.

                                               LAKE VIEW LAD (IRE)
2010 Bay Gelding by Oscar (IRE) ex Missy O’Brien (IRE) (Supreme Leader) – Rating 156c
                                                Owner: Trevor Hemmings
Lake View Lad put us on the map last season winning the Rehearsal
Chase at Newcastle followed by the Rowland Meyrick at Wetherby
on Boxing day. He then finished a gallant third in the Ultima chase at
the Cheltenham festival before running in the Grand National where
he didn’t get much of a run but jumped well and was a credit to the
team. Classy, consistent and very genuine, he is now the highest
rated horse in Scotland, we are lucky to have him in the yard.

                                       McGINTY’S DREAM (IRE)
2011 Bay Gelding by Flemensfirth (USA) ex Laboc (Rymer) – Rating 98c
                                                Owner: Kinneston Racing
The penny finally dropped last season when we removed the
blinkers and he climbed 23lb in the ratings with two easy wins
over fences. He took a heavy fall on his last run and was a bit sore
afterwards but has come back from his break in good form and this
quirky horse could well have more improvement up his sleeve.

                                                    UP HELLY Aa KING
2011 Chesnut Gelding by And Beyond ex Gretton (Terimon) – Rating 106c 100h
Owner: Jean Matterson & Partner (half share for sale)
This big horse really started to grow into himself last year and was
unlucky not to win a couple of handicap hurdles round Ayr before
getting off the mark first time over fences at Carlisle. Lightly raced
for his age, he is still maturing and having always seen him as a
chaser we hope the patience of connections will be rewarded
                                                     again this season.

                                                                                                        page 5

NOVICE CHASERS

                 BENNY’S SECRET (IRE)
2010 Bay Gelding by Beneficial (IRE) ex Greenhall Rambler (Anshan) – Rating 106c 112h
                 Owner: Brian Castle
Having been hard to catch right throughout his career, he was
relatively consistent last season making the first three on most of his
runs and recording his fourth win at Kelso over hurdles in April. He
prefers good ground and ran very well over fences at Musselburgh,
a track that doesn’t suit his style of racing, so if we can keep him
healthy it shouldn’t be long before he loses his novice status as a
chaser now he has some experience and is learning to settle.

                 EAGLE RIDGE (IRE)
2011 Bay Gelding by Oscar (IRE) ex Azaban (IRE) (Be My Native (USA)) - Rating 89h
Owner: Ken McGarrity & Murray Cameron
This well bred son of Oscar was disappointing last year, perhaps
taking longer than expected to recover from the setback he had
in Spring 2018. Having showed potential in his early runs and
been narrowly beaten in a point to point, we hope the switch to
fences will spark a revival and let him take advantage of a dropping
                 handicap mark.

                 FINAL REMINDER (IRE)
2012 Bay Mare by Gold Well ex Olde Kilcormac (IRE) (Supreme Leader) – Rating 111h
                 Owner: Brian Castle
This Gold Well mare took time to get over being hard trained to
win a 4yo point to point in Ireland and her owner’s patience was
rewarded when she landed the hat-trick in May/June 2018 with
good wins at Ayr, Cartmel and Aintree. She took a while to come
back to herself last season and unfortunately picked up a minor
injury this summer that will rule her out until she can hopefully go
                 novice chasing in 2020.

                 MANETTI (IRE)
2012 Bay Gelding by Westerner ex Mrs Wallensky (IRE) (Roselier (FR)) - Rating 111h

                 Owner: Sandy’s Angels
We were learning all the time about this big imposing Westerner
gelding during his first season with us and despite some fair runs in
novice hurdles feel he hasn’t been seen at his best yet. He is quite
headstrong so needs to settle better but we hope this multiple
point to point winner will come into his own once going chasing.

NOVICE CHASERS

                                             OFF THE HOOK (IRE)
2012 Bay Mare by Getaway (GER) ex Call Her Again (IRE) (Old Vic) - Rating 119h
                                                       Owner: Mrs I Hodge
This gutsy and consistent mare had a superb season, getting
black type when beaten less than two lengths in a listed hurdle at
Haydock, winning a 17 runner maiden hurdle at Ayr, and finishing
a credible fourth in the mares’ EBF final at Newbury on ground that
was not soft enough. She has never been out of the first four since
going over obstacles and has plenty of options this year between
                                    mares’ hurdles and novice chases.

                                        SILK OR SCARLET (IRE)
2012 Chesnut Gelding by Mahler ex Spirit of Clanagh (Zagreb) – Rating 102h
Owner: Ken McGarrity & Dudgeon, Cundall, Liddle
He was coming together nicely last season, settling better and racing
more professionally, before unfortunately picking up an injury after
two good runs in January. His jumping has improved with racing
and we hope he gets the chance to fulfil his potential when going
chasing in the new year off a what looks a competitive mark.

HANDICAP HURDLERS

               ALWAYS TIPSY
2009 Bay Gelding by Dushyantor (USA) ex French Pick (USA) (Johannesburg (USA)) - Rating 113h
Owner: Alan Wight & Judy Cockburn
He returned to Kinneston in the spring and had a fruitful summer
hurdling at Perth, winning and finishing 2nd twice, He picked up a
minor injury after that but will hopefully be fit and well to return to
               Perth next summer.

               BALLYNANTY
2012 Grey Gelding by Yeats (IRE) ex Reina Blanca (Darshaan) – Rating 113h 75f
Owner: Mrs J Douglas Miller & Ken McGarrity
This son of Yeats came to Kinneston from Ireland in August 2018
and had a busy winter mainly focussed around Musselburgh where
he won and was placed. His jumping in the early stages of a race
can be erratic so we will be doing plenty of work to try to ensure
that he can progress further off what still looks like an attractive
               rating.

               CHRISTMAS IN USA (FR)
2012 Bay Gelding by Shaanmer (IRE) ex Diamond of Diana (FR) (Darshaan) – Rating 100h
               Owner: Bowen & Nicol
Having taken a while to adapt to racing in the UK a change of
tactics inspired improvement and he won two of his last three
starts prior to filling the runner up slot last time out. Now
everything has come together we very much hope he can continue
to progress and we wouldn’t rule out switching to fences.

               DANCE OF FIRE
2012 Bay Gelding by Norse Dancer (IRE) ex Strictly Dancing (IRE) (Danehill Dancer (IRE))
               – Rating 79h 72f
               Owner: Team Kinneston
A frustrating horse who showed plenty of talent on the flat but
is resolutely refusing to show this over hurdles despite being a
perfectly competent jumper. He may have run on the flat again
prior to publication or we may have run up the white flag!

HANDICAP HURDLERS

               ELVIS MAIL (FR)
2014 Brown Gelding by Great Pretender (IRE) ex Queenly Mail (FR) (Medaaly) - Rating 132h
               Owner: The Ladies Who
A lovely horse who fulfilled our high expectations last season
winning twice very easily and finishing a close third in the Grade 2
Premier Hurdle at Kelso. His form has worked out so there should
be more to come in handicap hurdles this season prior to going
               chasing in the future.

               NICEANDEASY (IRE)
2013 Bay Gelding by Kalanisi (IRE) ex High Priestess (IRE) (Priolo (USA)) – Rating 119h
               Owner: Brian Castle
He arrived in February this year and ran a bold race to be narrowly
denied at Perth in the spring on his second start for the yard when
we stepped him up in trip. He can be a worrier but has summered
well and should do well in staying hurdles on soft ground.

               NOT THE CHABLIS (IRE)
2014 Bay Gelding by Scorpion (IRE) ex De Street (IRE) (Sunshine Street (IRE)) – Rating 100h
Owner: Turcan, Dunning, Price, Stewart, Burnham
A bumper winning son of Scorpion who learnt his trade hurdling
over shorter trips last season, he was a little disappointing when
put into handicap company over 2m4f in the spring but ought to
improve considerably for a step up to 3m.

               RYEDALE RACER
2011 Bay Gelding by Indian Danehill (IRE) ex Jonty’s Lass (Tamure (IRE)) - Rating 120h

               Owner: Bissett Racing
Acquired by the Bissetts at the Spring Sales at Goffs this decent
middle distance hurdler looks well bought. We are still getting
to know him but he ought to be worth following this winter
especially when there is a bit of cut in the ground.

2011 Bay Gelding by Kayf Tara ex Over Sixty (Overbury (IRE)) – Rating 124h
                                      Owner: Mrs Jacqueline Morris
This formerly high class Kayf Tara gelding had a long layoff with
injury prior to returning to the track last winter for his new owners.
A couple of moderate runs and a couple of good ones I think the
trick this year will be to step him up to 3m and the fact that he has
stood a season training will be a big help.

                                                     TED VEALE (IRE)
2007 Bay Gelding by Revoque (IRE) ex Rose Tanner (IRE) (Roselier (FR)) – Rating 125h
                                                    Owner: Kit Alexander
The legend that is Ted Veale won the County Hurdle at the
Cheltenham Festival in 2013 and came to Kinneston at the veteran
stage last winter. He started off for us by winning a point-to-point
prior to five excellent runs over hurdles including finishing a
close 3rd in a £50k handicap at Kelso against rivals half his age or
younger. He has slipped down the ratings now and if he retains his
zest should have another good season in front of him.

                                                                                                page 11
NOVICE HURDLERS

                  ARNICA
2013 Bay Gelding by Champs Elysees ex Cordoba (Oasis Dream)
                  Owner: Ken McGarrity
Typical of his sire this Juddmonte bred horse has proved a late
developer and showed plenty of promise in three bumpers last
season looking like an out and out stayer. He may well have one
more spin in a bumper prior to going novice hurdling where he is
likely to start out over 2m prior to stepping up in trip.

                  BIBLICAL (FR)
2015 Chesnut Gelding by Harbour Watch (IRE) ex Prophecie (FR) (Dansili)
Owner: John J Murray & Mrs Lynne MacLennan
This flashy athletic French bred horse arrived at Kinneston in
April following an excellent debut in a bumper when runner up
for previous connections. He was far too free on his first start
for our yard a month later but clearly has plenty of ability which
will hopefully come to the fore when he reappears this autumn.
Probably one more bumper then hurdling.

2014 Bay Gelding by Milan ex Greenhall Rambler (IRE) (Anshan)
                  Owner: Clan Gathering
We bought this good looking Milan half brother to Benny’s Secret
at the Spring Sales at Goffs, he had been a promising 2nd in an Irish
point-to-point appearing possibly to not quite see out the 3m trip,
we will probably start in a bumper prior to going hurdling.

                  CHANTING HILL (IRE)
2014 Bay Mare by Milan (IRE) ex Kitty Dillon (Westerner)
                  Owner: Quandt & Cochrane
We had been quietly trying to buy this scopey mare all summer
and were delighted to be able to buy her at Goffs August sale. She
is the winner of her only start in a point to point and from a family
we know well, she won’t spend long hurdling as she should come
into her own as a staying chaser.

GODOLPHIN SSSA WINNER 2019

The whole team were thrilled when in February Catch won the Godolphin Stable
and Stud Staff Award for Leadership and then simply overwhelmed when she also
won the overall Employee of the Year Award.

Catch has played a massive part in the success of Kinneston over the last five
years, she has shared our ethos of inclusion and involvement for the team of
staff and works with me to implement this on a daily basis. This culminated in
the yard winning the inaugural Lycetts Team Champion Award in 2018 (and very
nearly following up this year!) and it was thoroughly deserved that her work was
recognised by winning these valuable and prestigious awards.

                                                                             page 13

2012 Bay Gelding by Black Sam Bellamy (IRE) ex Lady Brig (Overbury)

                  Owner: Trevor Hemmings
I was thrilled to receive the call that we were to be sent this
potentially top class chaser as we knew him well as one of the best
horses to come out of the Northern point-to-point circuit in the
last few years. Last seen out winning the 2018 Buccleuch Cup by
a distance he suffered a setback early on last season but seems in
great fettle now, he will probably have a run or two over hurdles
                  before switching to fences.

2015 Bay Gelding by Dubai Destination (IRE) ex Comeragh Girl (IRE) (Imperial Ballet)
                  Owner: Trevor Hemmings
This active good-looking horse was a good 2nd in a bumper at
Killarney in May prior to being acquired by Highflyer Bloodstock on
behalf of Mr Hemmings at the Cheltenham May Sale, he may have
one start in a bumper prior to going novice hurdling.

2014 Bay Gelding by Westerner ex Lady Roania (IRE) (Saddlers’ Hall (IRE))
                  Owner: Mrs Lynne Maclennan
An extremely talented individual who won a bumper by 12l on his
debut for the yard in March, he’d been runner up on his only start
prior to that and we acquired him at the Cheltenham December
Sale. He over-raced a bit from the front in the Champion Bumper
at the Aintree Festival but still ran with credit to finish 6th, he is an
                  exciting prospect for Novice Hurdles.

                  GIPSY LEE ROSE (FR)
2014 Grey Mare by Walk in the Park (FR) ex Vanoo D’Orthe (FR) (Valanour)
                  Owner: Sarah Irwin
This gorgeous scopey mare won a point to point and a hurdle prior
to coming to Kinneston earlier this month, she remains a novice
over hurdles until 31st October so we will try to take advantage of
that prior to probably going chasing sooner rather than later.

Having shown such promise at Perth in 2018 we had planned a

plan will be to aim her for the Perth 2020 season.

He ran in two bumpers for the yard last winter prior to being
turned away to mature, his second run was considerably better
than the bare form reads and I am sure he will progress steadily
                                           over hurdles this winter.

until meeting a setback in February, turned away thereafter he

This mare was a little backward last season but the penny began to
drop in the spring, she has come back in much stronger and should
come to hand quickly this time.

A lovely strong mare by an excellent stallion out of a mare who is
an own sister to a top class horse. She is big and backward so we
have taken her steadily for two winters. She is a long-term prospect
but we will push on with her now.

An eye catching precocious looking son of the ultra tough “Arc”

A gorgeous daughter of the UK’s best NH Sire out of a very decent

                                                      very special.

A striking looking son of a top sire acquired at this year’s Land

A brother to an exceptional racehorse in Ted Veale by one of my
favourite stallions in Milan, the dam is by Roselier out of a Crash

He is also correct, strong and powerful with a good aspect to him
so who knows he may even end up emulating his brother and
                                            winning at Cheltenham.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW

We take great pride in doing our utmost to find suitable homes for our horses after
they finish their racing careers, this is particularly relevant this year as we retired 14
horses at the end of last season, and we wish them all the best. I thought you might
be interested to know where they are now –

JET MASTER – is living in Midlothian with his adoring new owner Denise, she is
hoping to do some cross country with him.

BERTALUS – has been taken on by team member Cameron who is reschooling him.

ANOTHER MATTIE – has moved in with team member Briony who has always
adored him.

JUST BROOKE – has retired to her breeder Catch at East Bowhouse and may appear
between the flags this winter.

ROSSINI’S DANCER – has already had great success in Retraining of Racehorses
Showing classes and competed at Blair Horse Trials last month for team member
Amy, in hand so far I note! He featured on this page two years ago but ended up
having two more seasons pointing…

KILLER CROW – has moved to Lauderdale country where he will hunt and then
point-to-point for Jack Clark.

ANDHAAR – is at East Bowhouse with Catch.

LEFT BACK – has gone to point-to-point down in Gloucestershire

RIDE THE LIGHTNING – has been retired to Pernilla in Buckinghamshire who
looked after him when he was in training on the flat.

ROAD TO GOLD – has gone up to Turriff where Sally who used to look after him
when she worked here will train him as an eventer.

FIG’S PRIDE – has returned to her breeder Claire Harper Gow in the Borders

THE ORANGE ROGUE – has been retired to a life of leisure with his owners the Irwin
family.

BUFFALO BALLET & MARLEE MASSIE – are still here!

SUSAN BRADBURNE

Kinneston lost a dear friend earlier this year when Susan Bradburne sadly died. An
iconic lady of the turf she played a big part in the development of the yard at a
crucial time. It is fair to say that we would not be where we are now without her
valuable contribution and for that we will be forever grateful.

to be a schoolmaster point-to-pointer running in Ladies Opens for
two of the team here – can he win away from Kelso? Hopefully he
will continue to provide fun this winter.

                Owner: Jamie Alexander
He came back to Kinneston as a fun pointer for Jamie and duly
obliged finishing 2nd on his last two starts, it would be great to
see him get his head in front again as he hasn’t won since October
2013 – we will do our best!

                RACING PULSE
2009 Bay Gelding by Garuda (IRE) ex Jacks Sister (IRE) (Entitled (IRE)) - Rating 117c
                Owner: Jamie Alexander
This formerly high class horse came to Kinneston in March having
lost his form in Ireland and was a revelation winning all three of
his starts including the Northern Area’s feature point-to-point and
feature Hunter Chase. He isn’t straightforward but is very talented
and has struck up a great rapport with his new rider.
