12 \ / 13About Vienna
the location In tune with beauty
Discover the Austrian capital’s majestic symphony of Rococo palaces, coffee
houses and wine gardens. Voted the most livable city in the world for the ninth
time by a renowned, international city comparison, the gorgeous Vienna is a city
of proud palaces and peaceful parks, a home to emperors and art, opulent balls
and waltzes, Sissi and Freud, Sacher tart and Wiener schnitzel. The metropolis with
unique charm, vibrancy and flair boasts outstanding infrastructure, is clean and
safe, and has all the inspiration that you could wish for to discover this wonderful
part of Europe. We invite you to explore Vienna – the symphony of all senses.
Vienna – a romantically imperial city
Vienna is a dream city for anyone with a romantic streak or an interest in history. Sightseeing
opportunities are to be found in abundance. Wander along narrow, medieval alleyways or
across imperial squares, view Schönbrunn Palace or the Imperial Palace (Hofburg) in the
footsteps of Sissi and Emperor Franz Josef, and marvel at the majestic architecture along
the Ring boulevard. Be inspired by an atmosphere steeped in history – which also boasts the
comforts and infrastructure of a modern city!
Vienna – city of music
Vienna has been synonymous with music for centuries, and was home to many celebrated
composers including Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and Johann Strauss. This outstanding
musical heritage has been preserved right to the present day. The Wiener Philharmoniker is
one of the world’s top orchestras, the Vienna Boys’ Choir is triumphantly successful wherever
it tours, and the Vienna Conservatorium has produced innumerable international award-winners
in all musical disciplines. Yet Vienna also boasts a lively scene for young people – if you love
music, you are sure to profit from Vienna.
Vienna – city of culture
Vienna possesses a lively and vast array of cultural attractions. Whether classical or experimental
theater, film or dance festivals, opera or operetta, or exhibitions and concerts – no matter when
you come and how long you stay, there is sure to be something exciting for you to discover.
14 \ / 15Vienna – city of art
Down the centuries, Vienna has always produced and nurtured world-famous artists. The
collecting passion of art-loving rulers and monarchs has made Vienna a treasure house par
excellence. The Museum of Fine Arts, for instance, is one of the world’s largest and most
distinguished museums, housing priceless works of art. Art accompanies you wherever you
go in Vienna – even some of its underground stations are listed properties (on account of
their elegant, ornamental Jugendstil style designed by Otto Wagner)! And Vienna is also
uniquely zestful as far as its literature is concerned. After all, where else in the world will
you find a city with its own “coffee house literature”?
Vienna – city of striking architecture
From the Gothic intricacies of St. Stephen’s Cathedral to the baroque grandeur of the Staats
oper, Vienna’s skyline is a wonder to behold. Shaped by the architecturally striking work
of many Counter-Reformation artists, Vienna has been influenced by both Germanic and
Mediterranean cultures, evident in its grand porticoes, shaded balconies, symmetrical arcades
and majestic loggias. This remarkable city has retained its eclectic elegance through the
centuries, and despite severe structural casualties during WWII bombings, there are still dozens
of original sites to explore.
Vienna – city of great minds and captivating coffee houses
Vienna has always been a fertile soil for artists and intellectuals, and a lot of the creativity and
big ideas have happened first in the city’s charming coffeehouses. Sigmund Freud, Leon Trotsky
and Leo Perutz are just a few recognizable names associated with Vienna’s intellectual scene.
When entering a coffee house in Vienna one feels compelled to exhibit the composure that
is demanded by this kind of elegant establishment. Often described as ‘the city’s public living
rooms’, guests at these typically Viennese gathering spots need only purchase a single
coffee, and they are free to linger below the high ceilings, cultivated interior decoration and
diverse fellow patrons for the entire day. As an absolute staple of the city’s culture, UNESCO
recently named the Vienna coffee house on their list of the ‘National Agency for the Intangible
Cultural Heritage’. Within this inventory, the coffee house is described as a place ‘where time
and space are consumed, but only the coffee is found on the bill’.
Vienna – city of culinary delights
Vienna is a sugar rush kind of city – so well known for its sweets that there never seems to be
enough time to sample all of its tortes and pastries, including the ones named for Mozart,
VIENNA
the ones created by Sacher and the ones honoring various eminences of the Austro-Hungarian
empire. The good news is that it is possible to steep yourself in Austria’s grand food traditions.
Do not miss to visit one of Vienna’s famous coffee houses, luxurious confiseries or traditional
wine taverns (“Heurige”) and work your way through famous culinary specialties.
No matter what you may be looking for in a city, the beautiful Austrian capital has it all –
from great composers and world-class artists though excellent coffee to the Viennese wine
grown in Vienna and enjoyed in wine taverns.
Visit Vienna – a destination for all senses!
