Sutton Giving Christmas COVID-19 Voluntary and Community Sector
Appeal

This Christmas will be difficult and different for all, for many reasons, and even harder for
some families; this includes those who are isolated and alone, families with young children
and Adult and Young Carers in families with illnesses and disabilities.

We want to recognise this and ensure that everyone who requires additional support and
care during this festive season will receive it. The aim of our appeal is that people within
our community most at need receive the gift of a hamper, Christmas care package or even
toys for the children. We have all joined together to ‘share the love’ in Sutton this
Christmas, and we invite you to do the same.

• To give the gift of time this year volunteer to help pack hampers, children’s toys and
deliver care packages, making an unforgettable difference to our Sutton residents.
Please contact Volunteer Centre Sutton at info@vcsutton.org.uk to register your
    interest.

• To donate money to make a huge difference to someone isolated and alone, by
helping us purchase food and other essential items for the festive period. You can
donate by visiting uk.virginmoneygiving.com/giving and search for "Sutton Giving".

    Bishopsford Rd, Carshalton, Morden, SM4 6BL between 9:30am and 4pm, Monday -
Friday, by the end of 11th December. This will help ensure that families most in need
will have food on the table and gifts under the tree.

The community in Sutton has always been very generous, so we would like to thank you
for all the help that you give and the contributions you have made.

COVID 19 Vaccination

As we prepare for the COVID-19 vaccine, we want to share some facts on ways that
vaccines are crucial and part of our defence against infectious diseases.
• Did you know that vaccines reduce the spread of infectious disease and even get rid of
   some completely?
• When enough people get vaccinated, it’s harder for a disease to spread to those who
   can’t have vaccines.
• Getting vaccinated protects not only you but also your family, friends and community.
• Vaccines are made to prevent people from getting serious infectious diseases. It’s much
safer for your immune system to learn to fight illness through vaccination than by
   catching and treating them.

Find out more about vaccines and why they are safe and important

Implications of the local restriction tiers for volunteering

Government guidance states that at all tiers, people who can volunteer from home should
do so.

People can choose to volunteer outside their home if:
• They cannot volunteer from home
• They do not need to self-isolate
• They follow social distancing guidance, or COVID-secure guidance if volunteering in a
   workplace
• Their workplace has not been ordered to close, if the role takes place within a
   workplace.

This will also apply to clinically vulnerable people, which includes the over 70s.

At all tiers, clinically extremely vulnerable people should volunteer from home. If they
cannot do so, they can still choose to volunteer outside their home. However, they are
advised that they may wish to ask for extra support from their organisation or group to
maintain social distancing and minimise contact with others.

At all tiers, the rules around gatherings and travel will remain the same. This means that
where people can volunteer outside their home, they’ll be able to:

• Meet in groups of any size, indoors or outdoors, while volunteering
• Travel to volunteer or while volunteering.

Government guidance aimed at volunteer-involving organisations and groups has been
updated in line with these restrictions.

New film shows importance of ventilation to reduce spread of COVID-19

A new public information campaign has launched by the government to highlight how
letting fresh air into indoor spaces can reduce the risk of infection from coronavirus by over
70%.

The campaign, which forms part of wider ‘Hands. Face. Space’ guidance, sees the release
of a new short film created with scientists and an engineer at Leeds University.

The film illustrates how coronavirus lingers in the air in spaces with no fresh air, increasing
the risk of people breathing in infected particles, and how the risk can be reduced
significantly by regularly ventilating enclosed areas.

Managing youth sector activities and spaces during COVID-19

The National Youth Agency (NYA), the Professional Statutory and Regulatory Body for
youth work in England, has, in consultation with Public Health England and the Health
and Safety Executive, developed youth sector specific advice and guidance. The guidance
will support local providers, leaders, volunteers and young people to remain safe when
engaging in youth sector activities. It is intended to guide the youth sector in opening up
services for young people at the right pace and time.

Would you know how to spot a dangerous toy online?

More parents shopping online plus increasing numbers of dangerous toys for sale via
online marketplaces mean a heightened risk of children suffering serious harm.

Dangers include:

• Magnets so strong they can burn through a child’s gut if swallowed
• Long cords that can strangle a child
• Small parts that can choke or suffocate a child
• Easy access to button batteries that can get stuck in a child’s food pipe, causing internal
    bleeding and even death.

But there are ways to spot and avoid dangerous toys when shopping online.

That’s why we have put together simple, practical advice that you can read, copy and
share at the push of a button, during a call, or over your social channels.

Take me to the free Christmas toys safety guide.

Anyone who has symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19) can get a free
test to check if they have the virus.
Get a test if you have coronavirus symptoms:
• a high temperature,
• a new, continuous cough,
• or a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste

You need to get the test done in the first 5 days of having symptoms.

What the test involves
The test usually involves taking a swab of the inside of your nose and the back of your
throat, using a long cotton bud.

You can do the swab yourself (if you are aged 12 or over) or someone can do it for you.
Children aged 11 or under cannot do the swab themselves.

There are 2 ways of getting a test. You can:
• book an appointment at a drive through or walk-through test site
• ask for a home test kit – this will be delivered to your home
If you get a home test kit, you will need to do the test and return the kit in the next 48
hours. You will be told how to do this.
Find out more about testing via this website https://www.gov.uk/guidance/coronavirus-
