The Mount Royal logo reflects our new direction as a university as well as our almost 100-year tradition in higher
education. The three folding forms represent open books – classic symbols of education and learning. They also reflect
open doors – suggestive of possibilities, opportunities and access to higher education, all core principles of Mount
Royal University. The three forms unite to present the letter “M,” representative of Mount Royal, and its integrated
academic community of students, faculty and staff. Together, the three forms also create a subtle maple leaf form,
denoting the strong Canadian legacy, profile and aspiration of Mount Royal University -- our past, present and future.
Finally, integrating the founding date at the visual foundation of the logo underscores our history as a leader in higher
education. These characteristics give the logo a dynamic, distinguished and national academic presence.

It is important for us to project these qualities through our logo and in all of our marketing and communications. Each
piece we create, whether written or visual, printed or electronic, makes a statement about who we are. For this
reason, basic rules for proper use and consistent design have been developed to maintain the integrity of our logo.

The following graphic guidelines provide a detailed overview of the Mount Royal University logo. They outline the
basic graphic components of our logo, its proper use, corporate fonts and colour palette.

Note: These guidelines do not cover Mount Royal’s Face to Face brand. For brand guidelines, please refer to

Logo components
The Mount Royal logo consists of three
elements: the icon, the institutional name and
the founding date.

When using the Mount Royal logo, these
elements must always appear together and
in unity, and not dismantled or presented
separately.

The proportions between the icon, the name
and the founding date must never be altered.

A horizontal variation of the logo has been
                                                                                          Icon
created for use only on materials with space
restrictions. See page 6 for details.

It is possible to create a graphic element from
the icon. See page 8 for details.

                                                                                          Institutional
                                                                                          name

                                                                                          Founding date

         Do not alter the proportions
         between the icon, the name
           and the founding date.

Clear space

Clear space is the minimum area around the
logo which must be kept free of any other
graphics or text. It is needed to ensure the
logo has enough visual breathing room to live
within a given space and with other graphic
elements.

The clear space unit is equal to the size of the
letters in the words “Mount Royal.” X X

Note - This is the minimum recommendation,
and more clear space is preferable.

Horizontal variation (limited use only)

Mount Royal’s institutional logo (shown on
page 3) is the default logo and should be
the first choice for all materials.

However, some materials have space
restrictions. For example:
• digital applications such as web pages,
web banner ads smaller than 60 pixels
in height, and e-mail may require a Sizing (including founding date)
     smaller version of the logo.
• branded merchandise such as pens For print: 9 mm (0.35”) high at 300 dpi to a
may require a horizontal version. maximum of 14mm (0.55”)
                                                                                       For digital: 32px high.to a maximum of 60px high
For these applications only, a variation of
the logo has been created. You should only
use this version of the logo when you are
limited by the medium, parameters and
size of an item.
                                                                                       Sizing (excluding founding date)
Do not use this variation to create a sub-
brand logo. See page 14 for information on For print: 6 mm (0.24”) high at 300 dpi to a

Icon as a graphic element Watermark options

The icon element of Mount Royal’s logo can
be used on its own as either a watermark
or a pattern in applications such as brochure
covers, web backgrounds, PowerPoint
presentations, stationery, etc.

To create a watermark, the icon can be
cropped into and a tone-on-tone application Cropping Tone-on-tone effect
may be applied to the icon.

To create a pattern, vertically mirror the icon
and connect the reflections together. A tone-
on-tone application may also be applied.

Note on cropping the icon — Within the icon,
there are three folded shapes. Visually, the
most important part of each shape is the “V”
where the dark blue and the light blue meet
(see the diagram below).

                    “V” Cropping Tone-on-tone effect

                                                   Pattern options

When cropping into the icon, you must keep
two of the icon’s three “V”s. Please see the
examples to the right.

Do not crop too much Tone-on-tone effect

Logo on backgrounds

In some instances, the logo may need
to appear on a photographic, graphic or
illustrative background. Because some
visuals may be busy, please ensure the
background on which the logo sits is
simple and neutral enough to enhance
legibility. Refer to the examples on
the right.

Do not place the logo on
          a busy background.
