SOCIAL NETWORKS IN TEACHING FOREIGN LANGUAGES

                                                                Abdurahmonova Zilolaxon

Abstract. The use of social networks in the educational process has increased the
effectiveness of teaching English as a foreign language. The social platform has many necessary
functions for storing and transferring educational materials of various formats, which facilitates
the process of transferring, receiving and mastering lecture and practical material.
Keywords: teaching foreign languages, social networks, distance learning, electronic
technologies.

Learning a foreign language at any stage of education involves the systematic
improvement of practical skills, which is primarily facilitated by the availability of
free access to educational materials. The modern electronic era provides the widest
range of opportunities to improve language skills using Internet resources along
with the technical capabilities of computer and mobile devices. In a matter of
seconds, the teacher and the student can get not only unlimited access to video,
audio, text materials in the language being studied, but also get the practice of live
communication with native speakers, regardless of the location of the participants
in the conversation. Proper communication teaching methodology foreign
languages organically connected in real time with technological innovations and
developments of the 21st century.
In addition to the variety of formats available for teaching, electronic
technologies also help to effectively organize the use of content in the
collaborative work of the teacher and students. The task of the teacher is to provide
learning materials and guidance on how to work with them, and the task of the
student is to process the information received, do homework and show the result in
the lesson. The organization of such work is often associated with a number of
technical difficulties associated with the transfer of educational materials to
students, especially if the subject is read in English using authentic text, audio and
video materials, and the course content is a unique author's development of the

teacher. The experience of teaching such subjects as "Interpretation", "Written
Translation", "Country Studies" and "Phonetics" in English to students studying
under the program for obtaining additional qualification "Translator in the field of
professional communication" at the Kazan State Conservatory allowed me to find a
universal a way of organizing the educational process with the involvement of a
social network.
By facilitating access to social networks through mobile applications, the time
spent on the social networking site has increased to the point where the user is
constantly "online". Users during the survey rethought and re-evaluated the
functions of the social network and use it not only for communication: "Social
networks have evolved from a means of interaction into an entry point to the
Internet, a place where the user receives the bulk of information." Thus, the social
network combines two important functions: social interaction and a channel for
content consumption. Thus, the architecture and internal structure of the social
network, namely the possibility of exchanging, hosting and storing data, played a
key role in choosing this medium as a solution for the organization of educational
activities.
It is important to note that in our case, the students themselves were initially
engaged in the search for the optimal solution and found it “without leaving the
network”. Obviously, the students felt the need for a single communication space
aimed at discussing issues related to learning English. In our case, the social
platform "Vkontakte" became the platform for interaction between students and the
teacher, the main audience of which is students and graduates of Russian
universities. An important indicator is also the time spent on the site - on average,
users spend 35 minutes on the site.
So, in 2014, students created the first group, closed by type, dedicated to
discussing various issues in the course. During the active existence of the
community, the group consisted of two teachers. Organizational questions were

asked on the wall, homework was posted, discussions were held, and relevant
audio and video recordings were added. Students in the second set in 2015 used a
different “tool” to share course information: they created a “conversation” or
“chat” in which at first only the students themselves participated. Then a teacher
was invited as a participant. The high motivation of students, the inability to attend
classes on a regular basis due to active concert activity on the one hand, and the
different formats of educational material on the other hand made me, as a teacher,
take the initiative in organizing the educational process. The result of the search for
a solution was the creation of a closed type group dedicated to the study of a
number of disciplines, where students joined at the invitation of a moderator
teacher. In the "Discussions" section, "Topics" were created, each dedicated to a
specific subject, such as "Interpreting". After every lesson a brief description of
what was covered in the lesson was posted, handouts in electronic form were
attached as attachments, provided links to Internet resources. A special line
indicated homework. In parallel with the group, there was also a chat for
discussion of current issues, where a notification was posted about the loading of
materials into the group. Thus, throughout the semester, each student had constant
access to all materials, could at any time refer to previous topics in order to repeat
the material or to catch up. This decision increased the effectiveness of training,
also due to the reduction in the level of stress that accompanies preparation for
credit classes, and increased the motivation of students in mastering complex
disciplines.
Social networks as such are an effective communication tool in the field of
education. Networks such as Facebook and Twitter also provide many interesting
ways for academic communication and teacher-student exchanges. Achieving even
greater efficiency in teaching a foreign language could be facilitated by specialized
professional platforms designed to improve the quality of education, but not all
Russian universities have sufficient means for their implementation. The relevance

of introducing special software or the use of publicly available resources, such as
social networks, obviously.
