didn’t start out on the right foot, but she managed to
        turn it around pretty quickly.
She was up most of Wednesday night with her daughter
Cassie who’d caught the flu, and by the time of her dressage
test Thursday morning with Shiraz she was sick too.
“When I went into the ring with ‘Luke,’ I was like, ‘You’ve
got this memorized; I’m going to sit back here and try not
to puke,’ ” she recalled. “I’m literally trotting around the
ring thinking, ‘Do not puke! Hold it together.’ After that I
went back to the barn and immediately went to sleep until
4:30. Now the running joke with my friends is that maybe I
should throw up before dressage more often.”
Shiraz finished overall 14th, maintaining his lifetime
record of no jumping penalties cross-country at this level,
and he notched his seventh four-star completion since 2011.
And Rutledge’s other ride, Covert Rights, finished in 11th in
his four-star debut.
Rutledge’s history with “C.R.” goes back to the very
