Welcome to the Dog Days of Summer - and finding places to be wild. I’m on Ambergris Caye
in Belize where island life has slowed down to a weak pulse. We miss our visitors but it is
also a time where we are really appreciating the beauty this small place on the planet
offers.
Today I will share with you my morning view. An explosion erupts from our front door every
morning as Panga absolutely loves our morning walks on the beach. We had a super strong
rain last night so the mosquitos are in their happy place. I seriously don’t know why God
made mosquitos. Maybe for the dragonflies? In any case, it was calm out there this morning.
A slight westerly wind wanting to change back to our home east wind - you could feel the
slight struggle as the breeze shifted. It was at this second I saw a school of permit come
close and then got sideways and split like flying saucers in the sea. All the herons were out -
a big tropical wave is on its way.
I contemplate that there must be a formula for when certain birds are about - the fish will
show themselves “x.” And if I knew that formula, that would make me the best fishing guide
in the world. I think that will require another lifetime but in the meantime, I know the
herons like the pre-front conditions on the beach side. I tried to take a few photos with my
i phone of a little blue heron, but it looks ridiculous. I did join the SanBirdranos - our little
birding community here in San Pedro. I’m the armchair member - I don’t have an ebird
account yet, but I do enjoy knowing my backyard birds . And I have a big backyard.
So as our waters reach each other, let’s plan for some fun fly fishing. Let the bigness take
over your world. Knowing something special is planned just makes a person happy. L-A

At the Guide School we spent, in- depth hours in the world of bugs, knots and boat management
which was beyond enlightening. After fishing in the mornings we’d switch places with the guides
and row them while they talked us through the drill. The school taught me so much about reading
water, where fish hang and river safety -it truly launched my fly fishing story!
