government & Community Relations Laguna Niguel Chamber of Commerce Providence Mission Hospital – COVID-19 Response Mission Hospital’s Chief Executive Seth Tiegen set for March 5 GCR Meeting The March meeting of the Chamber’s Governmental & Community Relations group will feature a presentation on an expanded topic that is on everybody’s’ mind – a clear explanation on how the Mission Hospital complex has dealt with the health risks and impacts of the Covid-19 virus on all of us, how it is impacting the South County specifically, and some truth about the vaccines and their availability. Seth Teigen serves as the Chief Executive of Providence Mission Hospital, one of 51 hospitals in a comprehensive network that provides care across seven states from Alaska to Texas. In this important role, Seth is responsible for driving Providence Mission’s success as the premier health care provider in South Orange County through the growth of high-quality clinical services and delivering exceptional patient experience. He oversees all aspects of acute care services at the Mission Viejo and Laguna Beach hospital campuses, as well as Providence Mission’s clinics, ambulatory centers and other associated business lines. For the past two consecutive years, the Orange County Business Journal honored Seth as one of the OC 500 and a distinguished member of the 2020 Directory of Influence. In 2016, Seth was recognized as one of the 50 Rising Stars in Healthcare under 40 by Becker’s Hospital Review. Seth has proven to be a personable and bright addition to our community, and his straight-talk style is sure to help us all better understand the pandemic environment and how it is being navigated by our health care providers. His presentation will be followed by reports from Washington D.C., Sacramento and locally by the legislative representatives of our elected officials. Her presentation was extremely informative and she was engaging and impressive. We are hopeful that we can invite her back for an update later this year. Ms. Dunn laid down some stark realities regarding the true impacts on the multiple layers of business in our region. She also provided some valuable advice on how to guide ourselves through the maze of government and private grant offerings and to reimagine ourselves going forward. Griffin Optometric Group Dr. T. Laguna Niguel Chamber of Commerce advocacy: a cornerstone of the chamber At its February monthly meeting, the Laguna Niguel Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors unanimously passed a formal position of support for Assembly Bill 259, “Protecting Our Restaurants Tax Credit.” The bill, introduced by Assembly member Laurie Davies of Laguna Niguel, would authorize a new tax credit to qualified taxpayers in the amount of 50% of the annual fee paid for or incurred by the owner or operator of the qualified taxpayer, for an alcohol license during that taxable year. At our request, AB259 has been placed on the California Chamber of Commerce’s list of key legislation for support statewide by other Chambers in 2021. It is anticipated that numerous other Chambers will follow our lead and “get on board” in support of this vital piece of legislation. In the two months since the start of 2021, the Chamber has also “signed on,” along with other business organizations, in support of three efforts to influence California’s Governor and state legislators on issues with impacts on the business environment being considered in Sacramento. These positions include: A letter from the California Chamber of Commerce to Gov. Newsom asking for more to be done for businesses as a part of the economic recovery plan he announced in January. As this pandemic continues and the economy continues to be shut down, the risk of businesses closing down permanently increases. The Governor’s Economic Plan that was announced may be a good start to assisting California employers who are suffering from the impact of the pandemic, but we believe more needs to be done to assist those employers in need as well as encourage other employers to stay in the state. A letter to all of the members of the Orange County Congressional Delegation, in partnership with the Orange County Business Council, requesting action in support of Covid-19 relief for businesses. It urged a continued focus on reinvigorating Orange County’s economy and getting people back to school and work in a safe and healthy manner. As businesses continue to do their part to ensure the economy is positioned to reopen safely and swiftly, the coalition sought to reiterate and emphasize multiple areas of the local economy in critical need of federal support. With the assistance of Sen. Pat Bates’ excellent staff, the Chamber recently signed onto a letter from CalChamber to Gov. Newsom and the legislature in opposition to imposing a new COVID-19 leave mandate on employers unless the State is willing to pay for the costs of that leave. California’s response to COVID-19 cannot continue to be subsidized by the business community, especially in light of the new paid time off and testing requirements under the California Occupational Safety and Health This Chamber of Commerce will continue to advocate for fair taxation and a supportive regulatory environment for business owners in our community and throughout the state. It is our commitment to you and a key cornerstone of your member benefits. Curious how COVID-19 Vaccines are being Distributed throughout California and Locally? To accomplish the twin principles of safety and equity, the State is leveraging an immunization framework to coordinate the administration of the COVID-19 vaccine. The State, County and the City are all working hard to provide a COVID-19 vaccine to everyone who needs and requests one. The success of the County’s phased, tiered vaccination plan depends on everyone being patient and allowing priority groups to be vaccinated first, i.e. age 65+. As additional vaccines become available, more vaccination appointments will be opened up to the public, with eligibility expanding to additional groups soon.
