A travel report by team rider Tobias Woggon and
     photographer Philip Ruopp.

There was no question in my mind: I wanted to travel
to Kamchatka. More specifically: I wanted to travel
to the Klyuchevskaya Sopka plateau. I wanted to
see the sun rise from behind the Tolbachik volcano
and I wanted to bike down the mountain against this
breathtaking backdrop. This was my dream and I was
going to make it a reality no matter how complicated
it would be to get there. And complicated was an
understatement, as Philip and I soon realized when
we set about planning the journey.

First of all, we needed a Russian visa. Foreigners
cannot simply enter the country on a whim – we
needed an official invitation from a local.

„MADE IN GERMANY“

When a technology stays almost unchanged for 30
years, it’s either very simple – or simply ingenious.
What makes the MAGURA HS the most popular
carefree brake for everyday cyclists and even those

                                                                /5
who cycle around the world? We reveal the secret
with a look into the German production.

In 2018 the MAGURA HS brakes celebrated their
30th birthday, celebrating the fact that in this time
millions of them had gone out around the world.
All the models are Made in Germany. It’s a German
success story that can probably only be compared
to the VW Beetle. Although rim brakes are often
believed to be underdogs compared to disc brakes,
sales figures have been rising steadily for years. In
independent tests, the braking performance of the
hydraulic rim brake even beats many entry-level
and mid-range disc brakes. At the same time, it’s
ingeniously simple and virtually maintenance-free. If
you’re looking for a safe and carefree brake, look no
further than the MAGURA HS. For countless bicycle
manufacturers, it’s still an important component for
reliable and attractively priced bicycle concepts.

The pursuit of ecological sustainability, flexibility and, last but not least, the issues caused
by the Covid-19 pandemic are creating a general changeover in our society – from four
to two wheels. Nevertheless, there are hurdles that are inhibiting this changeover. In an
interview with the ADFC (German Bicycle Association), we shed light on how cycling can be
                                     further promoted in Germany.
/14
50 % of all car journeys in Germany are shorter than five kilometres and,
25 % are even shorter than two kilometres.

Urban planning in Germany stems from the times when politics and
planning were dominated by the car – and it’s still heavily oriented on
motor vehicles. Above all, there’s a lack of cycling networks and the
know-how to create them. The topic of cycling promotion is not preva-
lent in most municipalities and there’s too little pressure from science
and politics.

Let’s imagine we have a blank sheet of paper and the authorities have
allowed us to create a new city in accordance with our ideas. How could
people be persuaded to switch to cycling? With its project “InnoRAD”, the
ADFC has a selection of particularly successful, best practice examples
from international cycling promotion and presents how these approa-
ches can be applied in Germany. Melissa Gómez is the Transport Policy
Officer at the ADFC – and we asked her for an interview.

                                                                            /15

Flexible, sustainable, sporty and cool! Cargo bikes are on the rise in more and more
cities – they’re replacing cars and ushering in new mobility and lifestyles. These bicycle
manufacturers are already showing the concepts of tomorrow.

What if you didn’t have to study tiresome underground train timetables – or if you didn’t
have to move through kilometres of traffic jams to transport the kids, and if terms like fine
