Randy W Stanton Director March 16th, 2021 Good afternoon all, Over the past month I’ve been faced with difficult decisions with helping my parents & grandmother through some troubling times. These kinds of decisions make me sad for them but proud & happy for Tami & I. We have both watched others in our lives, not to learn what to do right but what not to do. We are by far shining examples of what good decision making will do for you. We both come from struggling backgrounds, we did not want to bring our kids through. As we age & our health concerns become more real, our children will not be faced with the same struggling decisions we face now. I tell our kids “you can thank us later”! In making some of the trips to / from visiting. I’ve had a chance to ride my bike. Some things I note that are so much different, it’s quiet – nobody talking opens my mind to think about the task at hand & gives me clarity. By the time I’ve reached my destination, I’m more focused & less stressed. On a bike, you don’t get to snack the whole trip. That’s great for me because I LOVE gas station food! Chips, cookies, popcorn, hot dog, corn dogs YUM! This last trip was taken during Daytona bike week. I had a chance to meet many other motorcycles on the road in passing, riding along with or talking with while at the next fill up. Along my route with so many bikers in passing I noticed some things that made me question, do you wave? How? Do I pass? How? Do I approach other? How? I’m very curious this way. Tami is way more outgoing & approachable conversationalist than I am. Its very hard for me to start or just jump into a conversation. I did get to talk to many people at gas stops, the POLK COUNTY HOG CHAPTER patch on my vest probably helped some too. Even with the local law enforcement that approached me at one of my stops to talk about their own bikes & wishing me well along my way. I ask if there is a proper biker etiquette to the road. I’ve read many notes, recommended “rules” of the road for bikers. Search forums that talk about the do’s & don’ts of the motorcycle world. What did I learn? You can read all you want but the truth is – be yourself, be kind, be respectful & treat others as you would like to be treated. That does not mean everyone on a bike thinks the same as you. Everybody is not going to ride as your local HOG Chapter. Some like to ride side-by-side, some like to keep a large distance between bikes. HOG Chapters should obey the rules of the road, we ride staggered formation & attempt to follow the 1 – 2 second rule, right? The one thing I think most motorcycle communities can agree on no matter if you’re a riding club, 1% motorcycle club, social club / group, whatever you call yourself. Riding in a group can be safer than riding alone. The more you have the more likely you are to be seen right? Well, even though the 1% groups have bad reputations, if you look at how they ride – tight nit, as a group staying together nobody can deny cars do not split those groups up, rarely will a car get a chance to pull out on a group because there is a gap between groups. Be Safe! Have Fun!

Dale Barkman, Ladies of Harley Ladies of Harley Spring is coming and the warmer weather sets the stage for outdoor activities. The HOG annual spring picnic gets things started with a chance to hang out, eat some chow and this year do a little rock painting to share. The picnic will be held in the pavilion at the Mulberry Civic Center on April 17th, with lunch being served around 11:00 am. We are partnering with Jimbo’s barbecue for the boxed lunches that were so well received in the fall. The cost is $12.00 each and include ribs, chicken, baked beans, macaroni and cheese and hush puppies. Drinks will be provided as usual: sodas, tea, coffee and water. Anyone wishing to bring a dessert may do so. If you do not wish to order a boxed lunch, you are welcome to bring your own and share a table with us. Payment for the barbeque can be made to any of the board members, put in the mailbox at the dealership or given to me anytime we meet up. The last day to pay will be at the April 10th meeting so we have time to contact Jimbo’s for order. We are planning to have a table set up with all the supplies to paint rocks that will be placed at some of the area medical facilities. It puts a smile on someone’s face when they find a simple little rock with an inspiring message. Let’s spread some good cheer!! A big shout out to two of our ladies who took us on nice country ride this past weekend. Tammy Stanton took us from Lakeland through the winding back roads up to the gas station south of Brooksville to meet up with Connie Zimmer who continued our journey. We made a stop at a local farm for some fresh vegetables and then cruised again on the winding back roads to lunch at Coney Island. Great having these ladies take charge and plan an enjoyable day out. Looking forward to more!!! If anyone has ideas for things the Ladies could help out with, let us know. Let’s keep riding and hanging out, Dale Barkman Ladies of Harley Officer
Editor’s NOTES This month has been crazy busy for me – I know I say that a lot, but it’s been full of family visits and playing with grandkids and many other things that has stolen my attention. Because of my shortage of time, I decided to pull an article I wrote a few years ago. We have a few folks that are learning to ride for the first time and a few members tre changing up their ride, so I felt it might be appropriate to share how I felt when I first started out. Hope you enjoy! What Makes a Great Rider? Being the baby of the bunch, I find myself constantly wondering to myself if I’m a good rider. I ask my peers if they see me doing anything I shouldn’t or if there’s something I should be doing that I’m not. This is always on my mind – which leads me to my question, what makes a great rider? In the beginning I would think to myself, if I could just get out of my own head and allow my confidence to build I’ll be a good rider. I slowly got to the place that I wasn’t terrified just sitting on my bike and then I began thinking if I could only get to the place that my muscle memory was stronger I’ll be a good rider. By the time I would go thru my thoughts “throttle off, clutch, shift, clutch, throttle on” more time had gone by than actually takes to perform the function. Let’s not forget the hand signals and watching for road debris and random cars that appear out of nowhere – so many things to learn! Finally I’m sailing thru my gears, shifting up and down as if tying my shoes. But am I a good rider yet? Maybe it comes down to choosing the right riding gear. Maybe it will come after I have a few years under my belt. Or would it be more related to the number of miles I’ve ridden? And what about riding on different terrain and during different weather conditions? If a seasoned rider began to feel they had learned all that needed to be learned and their skills were all they would ever need to be, would that not then make them a careless rider? So is there a magic formula that creates a Great Rider? Maybe we never become great riders....maybe we just need to strive daily to be better riders. I believe it’s a conscious effort every time you get on your bike. I believe it’s staying alert to what’s going on around you. I believe it’s about owning your actions and riding responsibly. How do we ride responsibly? By honoring your lane, using your signals, following the traffic laws, staying alert and being sensible about what’s safe. I will never achieve being a great rider, but I’m constantly trying to become a better rider and maybe that is what makes a good rider. Tamara Stanton - Newsletter Editor
Checklist for New Motorcycle Owners: You’ve done it. You’ve bought your first bike. Congratulations - and welcome to a whole new world. It’s easy to let the excitement and anticipation be at the forefront of your mind, but before you hit the open road, it’s important to be aware of some basic safety tips and tricks in order to keep you (and everyone else!) safe. We’ve put together a handy mental checklist for first- time motorcycle owners – though these are good tips to keep in mind regardless of your experience level. 1. Take It Seriously: Motorcycles are awesome, and riding a bike is an absolute blast. That shouldn’t distract you from the fact that biking is a high-speed, high-risk activity. Don’t try to go full throttle on your first few rides out, and ride even more defensively than you drive. An accident that might slightly damage a car could destroy your bike beyond repair (and more importantly, kill or seriously injure you). You can only control your own bike on the road – how everyone else drives just isn’t up to you. Therefore, strive to be ten times more observant while on your bike than in a car. Check every intersection, be wary in parking lots, and never ride in anyone’s blind spot. Work on anticipating potentially dangerous situations ahead of you, so that you are prepared for the worst. 2. ATGATT: A famous acronym among bikers, ATGATT stand for All the Gear All the Time. Being geared up is an absolute must when it comes to riding your motorcycle. It doesn’t matter if you’re hopping down the road to grab a snack – crashes can happen anywhere and anytime (and most often, accidents happen close to home). Visit your local bike shop or dealer and ask for some help getting all set up for your first ride. You’ll need a high-quality, DOT-certified full-face helmet, along with an armored jacket and/or pants, riding boots, and reinforced gloves – and those are just the basics. You have plenty of options to up your safety even further, including ear and eye protection. You get what you pay for, so buy high quality. How much is your head worth? Do you want to bet your life on a $25 helmet? We didn’t think so. 3. Take a Class: Just because your uncle or your college buddy has a bike doesn’t mean they are your best bet for teaching you how to hit the road safely and confidently. Dirt biking all your life does not mean you will be all set on a motorcycle. Find an MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) course near you – it will only take a weekend, and you’ll come out a much more confident biker. In some cases, taking safety courses can also make you eligible for insurance discounts, and allow you to skip road and written tests in certain states’ licensing processes. If riding your bike is something you plan on doing regularly, it really is worth it to take a beginning and even an advanced course to help you maintain a strong visible presence on the road. 4. Check the Weather: Safe riders plan ahead. As a new biker, this holds especially true for you. Wet pavement reduces traction, particularly on painted road lines, and heavy rainfall can make road hazards harder to see. Even something as simple as a puddle can be quite dangerous to an unsuspecting biker. Know your limits, and take extra caution during wind, rain and fog. If you know about inclement weather beforehand, you can be prepared with water- resistant gear, or map an alternate route to avoid the worst of the weather. There’s nothing worse than being caught out in the rain without the proper riding gear. 5. Set Yourself a Routine: Check your bike before and after every ride. This might be hard to remember at first, but force yourself to make it a habit. Check your tire pressure, test out your brakes, and make sure you have enough gas to get you where you want to go. After your ride, check that your wheels are in good shape and that nothing is dripping. Visually checking your bike is one of the best ways to avoid larger problems down the road (pardon the pun).
6. Don’t Ride Impaired: Obviously, don’t drink and ride. Even having a single drink can affect your ability to turn smoothly. But drinking isn’t the only impairment you might face before choosing to get on your bike. Anything that affects your ability to be hyper vigilant is a big no before biking. This includes things you might not think about, like your prescription medications – even over the counter medicines can affect how you function. Don’t get on your bike if you’ve taken anything that might decrease your attention span or cause you to be tired, groggy, or slow to react. Speaking of being tired: tired biking can be as dangerous as drunk biking. Even a 15-minute nap can help retune your senses. Another thing to keep in mind - riding under the influence of a strong emotion, like anger or grief, will affect your decision-making and take away from your ability to pay attention to the road. Don’t get on your bike unless you are calm and rational – and think about riding as if you are in no hurry. Arrive Alive! 7. Be Prepared for the Worst: You should always carry Uninsured Motorist Coverage on your bike, also having Uninsured Motorist Coverage (“Stacked”) on your automobile insurance agreement(s). But what if something terrible happens to you? Do you have a family? If so (and really, even if not), you should have disability and life insurance, and should have all of your affairs in order. Write a will, if you haven’t. Engaging in a potentially high-risk habit like biking means that you should be prepared for the worst, so your family isn’t left picking up the pieces in the event of a tragedy. This checklist of tips and warnings is not to deter you from riding – we do, however, want you riding safely and smartly for many years to come.
