WE HONOR A SPECIAL LEADER AND FRIEND
PETER (PETE) DANIEL BECKER
(1969 – 2021)
This past December a fatal heart attack took the life of an LSA
volunteer and friend, Pete Becker. Pete, the son of Peter and
Elizabeth Becker, grew up in Forest Park, IL and attended St.
John’s Lutheran School in his grade school years, while graduating
from Walther Lutheran High School in 1987.
He attended Concordia University in River Forest, IL, where he
played baseball for the Cougars, enjoyed competitive games of
euchre with his friends, earned a bachelor’s degree in
Communication-Sports Broadcast in 1991, and served as the
school’s Director of Auxiliary Services & Contract Management
from 1995 until his death.
His loves were attending Green Bay Packer football games as well
as annual visits to the College World Series in Omaha, especially
with his daughter Brittany.
In 2002 the LSA came to Concordia University in River Forest to
host its Grade School Track & Field Championships, which began a
successful relationship between both organizations. Pete’s efforts in
coordinating the use of the school’s facilities were invaluable in
making things run smoothly throughout the event.
Pete spent many years serving his church and the university as a
man of faith in Jesus Christ as his Savior. We feel richly blessed to
have known him as a leader and friend, and we are sincerely
thankful for his years of service to the LSA and our Lord.

Friends and Members in Christ:
WELCOME TO STATE 2022– ANOTHER LSA FELLOWSHIP CELEBRATION!
On behalf of all your fellow Lutheran schools, your LSA Board of Directors, the STATE
Basketball and Cheerleading committees and all your hosts, it is our pleasure to welcome you to
the 37th annual LSA Basketball Tournament of Champions and State Cheerleading Competition.
If you are taking part in a STATE event for the first time, we extend a special welcome to you.
And if you’re a STATE veteran, we hope that this weekend brings back memories of past STATE
excitement since 1975.
Last fall, more than 200 boys’ and girls’ basketball teams began their seasons with the goal of
reaching STATE… and the 32 championship teams here this weekend have realized that dream.
Each invitation to STATE is a trophy in itself – the participating teams have already won
championships and some had to survive one of three play-in games last week to trim the field to
our two Sweet Sixteen brackets. You should be extremely proud of your group of Christian
young people and be excited about being tested against the “rest of the best”.
A weekend of this magnitude requires a tremendous amount of work. We are indebted to more
than 350 fabulous volunteer workers from all over the Midwest and our terrific host schools – St.
Peter, Trinity, Immanuel, St. John’s , and Concordia University– for their extraordinary effort and
their tireless work. We also thank our Play-in hosts for their great efforts on such short notice.
Exciting competition should be the rule this weekend. But as Christians, we hope that you will all
take part in and remember the weekend’s entire celebration.
As always, we’ve planned STATE 2022 to be a FELLOWSHIP HAPPENING for the whole family
in all areas of Christian life. This year’s “STATE Weekend Experience” includes the basketball and
cheerleading competition… STATE Worship led by Rev. Matt Conrad Yorkville – Cross Lutheran
Church and Music by East Dundee Immanuel Praise Group
life in our “living Christian community” in the hotels…. And you thought you came just for the
games!
CELEBRATE IN FELLOWSHIP! Enjoy the weekend… Praise the Lord!

May all who participate in this competition use their gifts and

A tude of Gra tude
In your rela onship with one another, have the
same mindset as Christ Jesus. Philippians 2:5
Dear players, coaches, cheerleaders and fans:
I would like to welcome you to St. John’s. We
consider it a privilege to host games throughout
the weekend at our site. We are proud of our
school as I am sure you are proud of yours.
This year our school theme is an “A tude of
Gra tude”. We certainly are grateful for all the
things that God has blessed us with. We are
grateful for being in school full me this year, for
dedicated teachers, dedicated parents, and for all
the students that God has placed in our care.
This year we are grateful for a full basketball season
and the opportunity for athletes around our state
to be able to par cipate in the Lutheran Sports
Associa on’s State Tournament. My prayer for all
of you is to enjoy the weekend, stay safe, and cheer
on your team with a Christ like a tude.
God’s Blessings on your weekend,
Thomas C. Kalal
Principal
9March 2022
Grace and peace to you, from our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!
It is my privilege to welcome all coaches, players, and fans to Immanuel
Lutheran Church and School, here in Crystal Lake! Congratulations to all
of teams that have earned a berth in the 2022 Lutheran School Athletics
State Basketball Tournament. What a fantastic opportunity and
experience, which was earned through their hard work and dedication!
As a host school, we hope for your experience to be filled with the
richness of God’s blessings and full of memories for your families! To
make your time here easier, please do not hesitate to ask an Immanuel
volunteer if you are in need of any assistance.
We have prayed for the safety of all those who are traveling and playing.
In addition, we send prayers that all involved, whether it is as fans,
players, coaches, or referees, may glorify God in their thoughts, words,
and deeds. Immanuel is thankful for all of the volunteers that make each
team, game during the season, and this State Tournament such a
success!
The LSA State Tournament is an opportunity for our athletes to
celebrate their time together with a weekend of fun and high-level
competition. May the all teams understand Christ’s intention for
fellowship in the way they compete and in the experiences they have
this weekend.
Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord,
not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the
Lord as a reward. It is Christ you are serving. –Colossians 3:23-24

My Friends,
Congratulations!
The very fact that you are reading this means that
you have put in a whole bunch of effort to get to
the point where you are part of the LSA
Tournament. Well done!
God’s Word promises that we can do all things
through Christ who gives us strength (Philippians
4:13), and that includes our efforts on the court.
While that doesn’t guarantee a victory, it assures
us that God is with us, granting us the strength
we need to honor Him in all that we do.
So...play hard. Do your best. God will take care of
the rest!
We’re glad you are here!
Fully Alive in Christ,
Rev. Micah Greiner

14STATE SPORTSMANSHIP
Your Board of Directors continually monitors sportsmanship
trends both in our leagues and nationally. It is tragic that,
especially in leagues and tournaments in our country, some
people have given up on sportsmanship. We assure you that this
is not the case in the LSA!
Your association reminds all of us ... players ... coaches ... fans
... volunteers ... and administrators ... that good manners and
Christian behavior are expected to be shown at all times. It is
not the State Committee's job to assure control - IT IS YOURS!
In October, 1994, your Board of Directors adopted the following
additions to our rules for all sports - and your principals have
signed their teams' applications acknowledging compliance.
These additions are:
For each school ...rules 10.01 and 10.02
The Principal, and the Principal's designees, shall be responsible to the
LSA and STATE hosts for matters pertaining to all athletic and non-
athletic activities of their school at the STATE tournament. In addition,
they shall be responsible to ensure that their school is properly
represented at all STATE events and shall be responsible for the conduct
of their participants and other persons from their school, including
spectators. Coaches, managers and team captains shall also be
responsible for team conduct both on and off the playing court.
It is the clear obligation of students, school staff, boards of education and
all other official representatives of participating schools to practice and
promote the highest principles of Christian behavior, sportsmanship and
ethics of competition. It is also their obligation to maintain proper crowd
control at all STATE activities. The LSA, its directors, volunteers, host
schools, tournament sites and tournament officials shall have no
responsibility for crowd control nor of the actions of school
representatives, including spectators. The Board of Directors shall have
full authority over all schools, their representatives and spectators and
shall have full authority, at its sole discretion, to penalize any school, any
of whose representatives or spectators may be adjudged upon competent
evidence to have violated these obligations.
May we all remember that we are all God's people…. and the reason for
Christian competition
15TEAM SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD
Excellent sportsmanship on the part of all participants -- players, coaches,
cheerleaders and fans - is assumed at STATE events and it could easily be possible
to award 32 sportsmanship awards.
However, to honor the "best of the best", a grading system is used. In each game,
each official and a member of the basketball committee or a member of the Board of
Directors grades both teams involved on Christian fellowship, attitude and a sense of
fair play.
The team in each division that best exemplifies the true spirit of Christian fellowship
and sportsmanship is honored by the presentation of the STATE Sportsmanship
Award.
ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM
It is never an easy task to select fifteen players from the almost 250 players from
sixteen teams in each division of the best teams in Illinois.
One member from the basketball committee or a member of the Board of Directors
selects two or three players from each team. Each player is given a rating based on
their individual talents (such as shooting, rebounding, assists and defense), value to
the team (including leadership and a sense of fair and team play), and to the
tournament overall (including Christian fellowship, attitude and sportsmanship).
One of the players will be selected as the game MVP.
The ballots are weighted on the theory that a vote in the championship game is more
significant than in, for instance, an opening round game. In addition, because some
players will play in more games than others, the weighted votes are divided by the
number of games played.
Fifteen players will be selected from the field of participants in the tournament. From
one of the fifteen, the basketball committee and Board members will select the Most
Valuable Player.

PALATINE BOBCATS
Ashley, Grace C., Riley, Jojo, Cami, Grace, Maggy,
Anja, Kathy, Mikayla, Gracie, Yianna, and Chloe
But blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in Him.
They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the
stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has
no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit. Jeremiah 17:7-8
Anja and Chloe,
your toughness through
adversity, your dedication, and
your positive but competitive
spirits will take you so far. We’re
grateful to have been a part of
your journey and we’re looking
forward to all of the success you
both will have in the future.
Once a Bobcat, Always a Bobcat.
We love you!
