20•The Summer STEM Institute (SSI) is a six-week virtual summer program for high school students. The
program was started last summer by educators, students, and graduates from Stanford, Harvard, and MIT.
Last year, SSI received over 2,450 applications from students in 78 different countries.
Many students who attended the program said SSI changed their lives and asked for the team to continue
running SSI in future years. Applications for SSI 2021 have just opened, and we thought your students may
be interested in applying.
The program consists of three main parts:
Research and data science boot camp: Students learn how to design and conduct data science research
projects. Students learn about the research process and how to apply statistical and machine learning
methods to address scientific questions with real-world impact.
•Masterclass lecture series: Students are connected to accomplished young adults around the world.
Students have the opportunity to learn about entrepreneurship from Forbes 30 Under 30 recipients, science
research from International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) grand prize winners, and other topics from
speakers with diverse backgrounds and experiences.
•Mentored research project: Students complete a research project through a rigorous, hands-on learning
experience under the guidance of mentors. Previously, students have worked in a variety of fields, from
computational biology to quantum physics.
If any of your students may be interested in and are a good fit for the program, could you please share this
opportunity with them? Students and families can learn more about SSI and apply on our website
here: https://www.summersteminstitute.org/.
21Florida PTA offers a minimum of four (4) scholarships, one each in the following categories:

Health Tip of the Week 1-5:
General Fitness Tips for Better Health
1. Strive for at least 150 minutes of exercise per week
Break it down to 40 minutes 4 days a week, 30 minutes 5 days a week, or however you’d like! Choose what
works best for your lifestyle.
2. Cut your coffee calories
Cut calories in your morning cup of coffee by skipping the cream and sugar. Instead, try drinking it black or
reducing your amount of each.
3. Keep a fitness journal
Tracking keeps you accountable, and studies show that those who keep journals are more successful at
weight loss than those who don’t.
4. Pay attention to your thoughts
Thoughts are powerful; bring awareness to yours. Do you encourage yourself with positivity or hold yourself
back with negativity? A change in mindset could be all it takes to get your health on track.
5. Eat the rainbow
Eat foods that are closest to their natural state as possible. Aim for whole, fresh foods in a rainbow of colors.
