LIFE IN THE WOMEN’S PRISON

                                                                              30 + students required
TOUR OVERVIEW: History Tour (1 Hour) + Experience (1 Hour)
This education package combines the Boggo Road Gaol History Tour with an immersive
historical re-enactment by the Prison Players: Female Division who bring the Gaol to life
through live theatre. The Players recreate His Majesty’s Prison for Women at Boggo Road in the
year 1907. Students will learn what life was like for female prisoners behind the red brick walls,
more than 100 years ago.

EXPERIENCE INCLUDES:

Students will come face-to-face with “real” female prisoners, and
can ask them about their lives and crimes, be taught how to fold
blankets and sweep the floor, watched over by a female warder who
can tell them about her role, duties and responsibilities.

Students will be part of a “muster” (roll call), then be marched into
the workshop to learn how to sew – an essential skill taught to
prisoners to help them find employment when they were released.

Students leave with a deep understanding of how hard life was for
women on the wrong side of the law – and those who guarded them
                          – more than a century ago.
