                                       SCHOOL NEWS
COMING TOGETHER
As we are slowly easing back into regular routines, we are excited to have events where we are
cautiously bringing people together and exploring beyond the walls of our school. Last week there were
field trips to the Britannia Mining Museum and Burnaby Village and next week we will have our first
assemblies in well over 2 years! It’s hard to believe that something a school is so used to having on a
regular basis will be a new experience for the Kindergartens and Grade 1s, and a distant memory for
the Grade 2s. We are starting slow, with separate primary and intermediate assemblies on Monday to
keep the numbers low and on Wednesday the intermediate students be entertained by the West
Vancouver Secondary School Concert Band as a part of their tour to Ridgeview, Hollyburn and Irwin
Park. This will be a great chance for the grade 5 and 6 students to see what is possible if they join the
school band program.

On a larger scale, we have a dynamic team of volunteer parents from the RPAC, working to put
together the 2022 edition of the Ridgeview Mayfair on June 16th. Plans this year include food and
activities for everyone to enjoy. This will be a fun filled, family-oriented activity where the community
can come together for the first time in far too long. We hope to see everyone at Mayfair as a chance to
come together before we break for the summer.

EMERGENCY RELEASE DRILL – MAY 19TH
Please mark your calendars that on the afternoon of Thursday, May 19th we will be conducting a
student release drill. There will be staggered pick up times starting at 1:45pm for Grades K-2, 2:10pm
for Grades 3-4, and 2:30pm for Grades 5-7. More information will be sent out tomorrow. Please note
that it is important that you bring photo ID with you when you pick up your child and/or a child
you are listed as a designated alternate.

MOVING? CHANGING SCHOOLS? (GR K-6)
It is very important to inform us if you know your child(ren) will NOT be returning to Ridgeview in
September for the 2022/23 school year. Please email Mrs. Lytle (slytle@wvschools.ca) as soon as
possible as it is important for us to have accurate information regarding enrollment for the upcoming
school year. Thank you for your cooperation.

STUDENT PLACEMENT INPUT REQUEST FOR 2022/2023 (GR K-6)
Our class placement process ensures that thoughtful consideration of each child’s social, emotional
and academic needs is aligned with the need to create balanced and effective learning environments.
The assignment of students to classes is decided by a team, which includes the School Based
Resource Team, a child’s current teacher, non-enrolling teachers, support staff and the administrators.
This professional team considers each placement carefully as they create classes that include a wide
range of students who learn in a variety of ways.

In addition to individual circumstances, criteria considered in the placement process include:
1) Workable instructional groups considering:
    • the child’s academic needs and strengths;
    • teaching and learning styles;
    • the child’s work habits
2) Positive social groups considering:
    • placements where a child can work positively and productively with other children in the class;
    • peer support or conflicts;
    • establishing the presence of positive leaders in each class
3) Balanced classes considering:
• gender (male/female);
   • inclusive practices;
   • English Language Learners;
   • social, emotional and academic needs and abilities;
   • leadership abilities
4) Other information considered:
   • School-Based Resource Team recommendations

If there is information that the current classroom teacher and/or the principal does not have and should
consider when placing your child, parents may wish to complete a Student Placement Input Form
(attached).

Please submit any Input Forms to Mr. Zerbe (wzerbe@wvschools.ca) and “cc” your child’s current
classroom teacher. Input Forms are due no later than MAY 13th to be considered for student
placement for the 2022/23 school year. Late request cannot be honoured. (Please also consider
only making a request if there are extenuating circumstances.)

Please consider the placement criteria referenced above when describing your child’s needs. If you are
requesting placements that involve other students (one or two at most) please think carefully before
making your request and provide an explanation for that request. Please focus on the needs of your
child.

The information that you provide in your Input Form will be given to the team of professionals described
above, to be used along with the criteria listed above in the placement of your child. Please note that it
may not be possible to meet all requests as classes are determined. Teacher assignments are tentative
and subject to change, along with enrolment and school organization change.

Reminder: Please note that Input Forms will not be accepted if names of staff members are used
in outlining your requests/concerns. Letters containing staff names will not be used in the class
building process. Our goal is to meet the needs of all students at Ridgeview in order to maximize their
growth as learners. We appreciate your support in the complex multi-level process of arranging
educationally sound and balanced classes.
