Ah, February, the month of love. When we reflect on romance,
weddings and marriage certainly come to mind – the fresh-faced,
happy couple coming together in wedded bliss, hand in hand, as
they look forward to the rest of their lives together. In many cases,
first marriages involve partners in good health and on equal finan-
cial footing, few assets, and (likely) no children. But what about
subsequent marriages? Nowadays, many people find themselves
marrying again later in life, once they have acquired assets, retire-
ment accounts, life insurance, and, usually, children, merging much
more complicated financial situations with higher stakes.
Experts say the first and most crucial step is honest discussion.
Although talking about finances can feel a little uncomfortable,
more experience should make it easier the next time around. Sit
down with your spouse-to-be and have a frank conversation (or
conversations) about priorities and intentions, especially related
to money – your assets, debts, inheritance plans, retirement
