PGY-1 Ambulatory Care

Career interests: Ambulatory care with goal of narrowing scope during PGY-1 year

Why the Madison VA?: The team support and camaraderie on top of the wonderful
preceptors!

Residency Project: Upper GI Bleeding in Patients on Oral Anticoagulants in a VA
Anticoagulation Service: Risk Factor Analysis
Why the Madison VA?: During pharmacy school, I had the opportunity to work on
population health initiatives at the Madison VA. It was so rewarding to work with the
Veteran population and be able to serve those who served us. Pharmacists within the
Madison VA work at the top of their licenses to provide high quality patient care. That
combined with the incredibly supportive and positive work culture fosters a great
environment for growth as residents!
Hobbies: Hiking, kayaking, rock climbing, camping, hanging out with my dog, reading,
and baking
Favorite things to do in Madison: Spending time on the surrounding lakes and hanging
out at the terrace

Career interests: I am currently interested in primary care and diabetes, but I am
excited to experience all the different ambulatory clinics the Madison VA has to offer!
Residency Project: Improving feasibility of CPS deprescribing visits utilizing the
VIONE tool
Why the Madison VA?: I have always wanted to be a part of the Madison VA because
of the enthusiasm and culture of the pharmacy department, being able to build
relationships with the most deserving patient population, working at the top of my
license in an ambulatory care setting, and the numerous teaching opportunities at
the UW-Madison School of Pharmacy.
Hobbies: I love spending time outside walking, hiking, and biking. I am also interested
in photography.
Favorite things to do in Madison: My favorite places in Madison are the Arboretum,
Botanical Garden, Picnic Point, and the Mendota and Monona Terrace.

Residency Project: Antiplatelet deprescribing in Veterans on direct oral
anticoagulants indefinitely for atrial fibrillation or venous thromboembolism with
stable coronary artery disease
Why the Madison VA?: I chose the Madison VA because I want to serve our nation’s
Veterans while working alongside an incredible pharmacy team. The work culture at
the hospital and clinics is such a positive environment to work and learn in, and I am
excited to continue my education here!
Hobbies: Hiking, camping, soccer, alpine skiing, water sports, cooking
Favorite things to do in Madison: Vising the Terrace, farmer’s market, cheering on
Badger sports, live music concerts, trivia

Residency Project: Does the development and execution of a provider-run BZD taper
clinic result in deprescribing or dose reduction of BZD prescriptions in geriatric
patients?
Why the Madison VA?: One of the things that attracted me the Madison VA was how
kind and welcoming everyone I met was. Also, everyone I talked with was extremely
passionate and happy about the work they do and the opportunity to serve the
veteran population. One of the things I am most excited about for the coming year is
being able to grow my knowledge in many of the different clinics that the Madison
VA has to offer while being able to serve the Veteran population.
Hobbies: Skiing, traveling, baking
Favorite things to do in Madison: I just moved here so exploring all that Madison has
to offer. I loved the Farmers Market!

Career interests: Pain and palliative care, critical care, oncology
Residency Project: Evaluation of Buprenorphine Utilization for Opioid Use Disorder
in the Emergency Department
Why the Madison VA?: The inclusive culture at the Madison VA is absolutely
incredible. As a pharmacy student, I completed the majority of my APPE rotations
here and it was really exciting to see the amount of involvement pharmacists have in
patient care through their broad scope of practice and ability to practice at the top of
their licenses. On top of that, the preceptors at the Madison VA genuinely have a
passion for teaching and foster such a positive learning environment. It is truly an
honor to be able to provide care to Veterans and I am so excited to be a part of this
program and serve those who served us!
Hobbies: I enjoy running, biking, canoeing, baking, and cheering on my favorite
Wisconsin sports teams!
Favorite things to do in Madison: Biking the lake loop, running to Picnic Point, and
going to the Farmers Market on the Capitol Square!

Mackenzie Betancur, PharmD

Career interests: Primary care, heart failure, diabetes
Residency Project: Evaluation of clinical pharmacy specialist performing
comprehensive medication management in a VA transplant program
Why the Madison VA?: So many reasons! I had fantastic ambulatory care APPE
rotations during my 4th year of pharmacy school that lead me to pursuing VA
hospitals. I was extremely excited when I found the Madison VA and learned that I
could do a full year in ambulatory care as a PGY-1 resident. When I interviewed here
it was undeniable that I would be learning from the best and that this is where I
needed train. I love being able to give back to veterans who have given so much to
us.
Hobbies: I love spending time with family, my friends, and my pets (2 dogs and 1 cat
). I also love to read, care for my many houseplants, and play board/card games.
Favorite things to do in Madison: Kayaking on the lakes and exploring new
restaurants!

Residency project: The metabolic and cost impact of initiating subcutaneous
semaglutide in patients with type 2 diabetes on high daily doses of insulin
Why the Madison VA? I was able to complete an internship at the Madison VA during
pharmacy school, and I loved the work culture within the pharmacy department and
the hospital as a whole. Everybody goes above and beyond to serve the Veterans and
provide high quality and coordinated care. Of course, an added bonus is the
pharmacists’ extensive scope of practice and the strong trust that others have in the
pharmacy team.
Hobbies: Photography, baking, board games/puzzles, visiting National Parks, frisbee
Favorite things to do in Madison: Visit all the amazing restaurants, walks at Picnic
Point, kayaking on the lakes, and going to the Farmer’s Market.

Why the Madison VA?: As a student, I had the incredible opportunity to complete a
population health project at the Madison VA that allowed me to make important
interventions for rural Veterans. This was my first glimpse into the incredible scope
of practice pharmacists have here, and the impact they can make in Veterans’ lives.
After then completing an APPE rotation in ambulatory care at the Madison VA, it was
clear that the culture and practice model for pharmacists here is unmatched. I grew
more and more passionate about ambulatory care with every day on rotation, and I
quickly learned that this was the place I was meant to be for residency!
Hobbies: Crafting (painting, crocheting, arm knitting, zentangle, etc.), figure skating,
hiking, and spending time with friends, family, and my dog
Favorite things to do in Madison: Exploring new restaurants and cute shops
downtown, hanging out at the Terrace or Farmer’s market, and hiking at nearby state
parks

Residency project: Optimizing Care for Veterans with Chronic Leukemia through the
Expansion of a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist- Managed Chronic Leukemia Service
Why the Madison VA? I am passionate about both the culture of the pharmacy
department here at the Madison VA and the role of the clinical pharmacy specialist
within the primary care team. This team approach to care truly allows for
interdisciplinary collaboration. Forming relationships with Veterans and helping
them achieve their specific health goals also motivates me.
Hobbies: Cooking, kayaking, board games, and spending time with family/friends.
Favorite things to do in Madison: I love exploring new restaurants and getting out
on the lakes!

Why the Madison VA?: After doing the VALOR internship here, I realized why staff
really want to stay! The work culture at the VA is absolutely incredible. Everyone is
extremely supportive of one another and genuinely tries to lift their colleagues up
and help them succeed. Not to mention, serving Veterans is an honor, and it’s a
great feeling to know that the patients we serve appreciate and value the services
we offer. Also, the scope of practice and the expansive role pharmacists are able to
take on in the interprofessional health care team reassured me that every day at
the Madison VA we have the opportunity to make a positive impact on our patients’
lives. And that seemed like a pretty great place to work!
Hobbies: hiking around state parks, trying to cook new recipes, hanging out with
my puppy, and watching the Packers

Badger sports!

Chelsea Drake, PharmD
Pharmacy school: I obtained my PharmD at The University of Arizona and went on to
complete by PGY1 at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock, TX.
Career interests: I’m really interested in palliative care, pain management, oncology,
and precepting
Residency Project: Impact of inpatient pain management pharmacy service
Why the Madison VA?: I was drawn to the Madison VA primarily due to their strong
diversity and inclusion values and that I would be able to practice in all areas of
interest.
Hobbies: I enjoy baking, cooking, trying new recipes, listening to audiobooks, and
taking pictures of my cats.
Favorite things to do in Madison: In the short time I’ve been here, I’ve enjoyed all the
parks and trying all the local restaurants.

PGY-1 Health-Systems Pharmacy Administration Resident
Pharmacy school: Texas Southern University College of Pharmacy
Career interests: Advancement of Ambulatory care services, specialty pharmacy,
medication safety, clinical management, and most importantly advocating for the
pharmacy profession
Residency Project: I will be working on a research project on health equity using
predefined factors in our VA facility.
Why the Madison VA? The Madison VA felt like home to me during my residency
interview. After my interview on that faithful day, I was very convinced I wanted to
be part of this family. The Madison VA residency program offers numerous
opportunities that align closely with my career goals. The extensive leadership
experience in addition to the program’s dedication to the advancement of
pharmacy research and expansion of clinical knowledge amongst its residents
further solidified my decision. Here, I will have the opportunity to sharpen my
clinical skills as well as learn the ropes of becoming a leader in a health system.
Ultimately, it was the people, everyone was so welcoming and there was a sense of
family from the very start.
Hobbies: Soccer, Running, trying out new restaurants, and spending quality time
with family and friends.
Favorite things to do in Madison: I have enjoyed hanging out with my co-residents,
kayaking, bike riding. I still have so much to explore

Why the Madison VA?: A huge part of why I chose the Madison VA is the culture. I
believe that the pharmacy department here fosters an environment of continuous
growth as both a healthcare professional and as an individual, and I am so excited to
be a part of this wonderful community!
Hobbies: I love running, hiking, playing tennis, and pretty much anything active! I
also love traveling, especially trying new restaurants in another city.
Favorite things to do in Madison: Eating Stella’s spicy cheese bread with my co-
residents at the Dane County Farmer’s Market, having a bonfire at Picnic Point, and
hanging out at the Memorial Union Terrace.

Why the Madison VA?: I had some great experiences working with Veterans through
the Madison VA during pharmacy school and knew I wanted to continue serving the
Veteran population in my career. The pharmacy team and overall environment is
very supportive and the advanced roles of both ambulatory care and mental health
pharmacists at the VA provide for an amazing learning experience!
Hobbies: biking/hiking/camping, spending time with family/friends, reading, and
anything crafty
Favorite things to do in Madison: I love all the running and biking trails in and around
Madison, and spending Saturday mornings at the Farmer’s Market!

Why the Madison VA: Our MH PGY-2 program is incredible. All of the preceptors are
super passionate about teaching and really care about you as a resident! So mix in
the wide variety of advanced learning experiences and the amazing RPD who goes
out of her way to meet with you regularly and personalize your schedule, there truly
isn’t a better psych program!
Hobbies: Traveling, scuba diving, reading, getting way too into Netflix/Hulu series,
really anything that involves being on the water and staying active
Favorite things to do in Madison: Exploring the endless restaurants, trails, and, of
course, the Farmer’s Market!

Coming from a family of Vets, I wanted to show my appreciation and serve them as they have so selflessly served us! Next, I wanted to complete a residency at a facility that valued pharmacy, and it’s safe to say that the Madison VA is THE place to be for this. The scope of practice pharmacists have and the role they play in direct patient care is an experience unlike anything I have had thus far, and it really ensures that Veterans get timely (and amazing!) care. You can truly feel the support not only from your co-residents, but every preceptor as well. We are truly a team here!
